Anomalies now page through alert rules, so they get destinations, severity tiers, acknowledgement, silences and (with #2304) escalation chains and on-call, the same as every other alert. This is PR 1 of the anomaly/alert unification; the dashboard (anomaly rules in the editor, anomaly evidence on the incident page, /anomalies folded into the hub) and maintenance windows follow on top.

What changed

  • New anomaly alert signal type. Like uptime and SLO rules, an anomaly rule reads a source instead of the warehouse: AnomalyAlertSource turns the detector's open anomalies into observations (1 warning, 2 critical, 0 once the anomaly ends). The evaluator then opens, escalates and resolves normal alert_incidents. AlertsService only gains that branch plus a few anomaly guards.
  • Default rule plus scoped rules. Each org gets one unrouted default anomaly rule, backfilled on the anomaly tick. It cannot be deleted, disabled or scoped, and it does not count against the 100-rule cap. Users can add rules scoped by service, environment and anomaly signal with their own routing. Unrouted means nobody is paged until someone adds a destination, which is today's behaviour.
  • Assignment. Each anomaly goes to the most specific enabled rule that covers it and has a tier at or below its severity; ties go to the lowest id. While an anomaly is open it stays on its rule unless a strictly more specific rule qualifies, which takes it over.
    • Example: with a critical-only checkout rule routed to PagerDuty, a checkout warning shows on the default rule. When it turns critical it moves to the checkout rule and pages.
  • One incident per anomaly. Groups are keyed by the anomaly incident id, which stays stable across reopen, error-spike consolidation and fingerprint promotion. The detector key changes in those cases. Incidents store anomaly_incident_id and a group_label such as checkout (production), which every channel, the hub and the API show instead of an id.
  • No duplicate issues or triage. Anomaly rules reuse the anomaly's issue (and keep the link fresh). They skip the alert issue upsert, issue escalation and alert triage.
  • Readable notifications. Notifications read like Critical anomaly: error rate 4.2% vs baseline 0.3% in checkout (production), not 2 >= 2. No new AlertEventType values.
  • v2 and MCP. anomaly_signals on rules; anomaly_incident_id and group_label on incidents. Create and update alert rule accept signal_type=anomaly. Preview refuses anomaly rules with a clear 400.
  • Migration. Adds alert_rules.anomaly_signals_json, alert_incidents.anomaly_incident_id and alert_incidents.group_label; all nullable.

Verification

  • Backend alert suites: 168 tests across the anomaly, silences, delivery and evaluation files, plus earlier full runs of src/services/alerts/ (583). They cover:
    • assignment and handover
    • the default-rule guards and cap
    • incident links, with no second issue or triage
    • escalation and resolve
    • multi-service scope
    • detector-key rewrites
    • state rows surviving housekeeping
    • group labels on resolves after a rule is disabled
  • Other suites:
    • MCP tools and the registry contract: 327
    • v2 alerts: 25
    • apps/alerting: 25
    • domain http: 291
    • web-data: 155
    • web alert pages: 232
    • db parity: 5
  • Typecheck clean in backend, domain, db, web-data, alerting, ai, api and web. Both oxlint configs clean on changed files.
  • Two review passes (correctness, and Effect and repo conventions). Each finding was reproduced in a scratch test, fixed, and re-checked against the same scenarios.

Known risk

The iOS app decodes signal_type as a closed enum, so installed builds fail to decode a v2 incident or rule list that contains an anomaly entry until they update. SLO rules (slo_burn_rate) shipped with the same limit. This PR adds the .anomaly case and groupLabel to the Swift code; I could not build iOS here.

Stack: #2318 (anomalies page through alert rules) → #2319 (silences match anomaly labels) → #2320 (anomalies in the alerts hub) → #2323 (maintenance windows)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added anomaly alert rules with configurable signal filters, severity levels, service and environment scope, and automatic default-rule creation for organizations with open anomalies.
    • Anomaly incidents now include clearer descriptions and can be linked to their underlying anomaly in API responses.
  • Improvements
    • Alert views and notifications display readable group labels when available.
    • Anomaly rule previews are unavailable; guidance directs callers to incident listings instead.
    • Anomaly severity appears as Normal, Warning, or Critical across supported displays.

The anomaly detector opened anomaly incidents that nobody could route, ack,
silence or escalate. A new `anomaly` alert signal type reads the detector's
open anomalies the way uptime and SLO rules read their sources, so every
anomaly becomes an alert incident with the normal lifecycle.

- One undeletable, unrouted default anomaly rule per org (backfilled on the
anomaly tick) plus optional rules scoped by service, environment and signal.
- An anomaly goes to the most specific rule that covers it and has a tier at
or below its severity; it hands over when a narrower rule qualifies.
- Incidents are keyed by the anomaly incident id, link `anomaly_incident_id`,
reuse the anomaly's issue and triage (no second issue or triage), and store
a `group_label` such as "checkout (production)" for every surface.
- Notifications show the anomaly sentence instead of the severity code.
- v2 API and MCP expose `anomaly_signals`, `anomaly_incident_id` and
  `group_label`.

Walkthrough

This change adds anomaly rules that observe detector incidents, assign and evaluate them by scope and severity, and store incident links and display labels. It extends rule APIs, notification formatting, and web, iOS, and MCP views to carry and display anomaly data.

Changes: Anomaly alert rules and incidents

Layer / File(s) Summary
Persist and expose anomaly data
packages/db/*, packages/domain/src/http/*, packages/domain/src/mcp-outputs/alerts.ts, packages/web-data/src/collections/alerts.ts, apps/ios/Packages/MapleAPI/Sources/MapleAPI/openapi.json
Alert records and API schemas add anomaly signal filters, anomaly incident IDs, and group labels. Row decoders map the added fields into alert documents.
Normalize and protect anomaly rules
packages/backend/src/services/alerts/anomaly/anomaly-rule.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/AlertRuleModel.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/AlertRulesService.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/anomaly/*.test.ts
Rule normalization adds anomaly defaults, severity tiers, and signal filters. Rule assignment uses scope specificity and retains a qualifying current rule unless a more specific candidate qualifies. The default anomaly rule receives write and delete protections.
Observe anomalies and backfill default rules
packages/backend/src/services/alerts/anomaly/AnomalyAlertSource.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/anomaly/AnomalyAlertSource.test.ts, apps/alerting/src/scheduled.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/alerts-service-test-support.ts, apps/api/src/routes/v2/*test.ts
AnomalyAlertSource emits observations for open anomalies and existing incidents, and creates missing default rules in scheduled backfill. The scheduler runs detection before backfill.
Evaluate observations and update incidents
packages/backend/src/services/alerts/AlertsService.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/AlertsService.anomaly.test.ts
AlertsService evaluates anomaly observations, records anomaly IDs and labels on incidents, and updates linked issue IDs. Anomaly rules skip query previews and alert-owned issue creation and escalation.
Expose rule operations and incident data
apps/api/src/routes/v2/alert-*.http.ts, apps/ai/src/mcp/*, apps/api/src/routes/v2/alerts.http.test.ts, packages/domain/src/http/v2/*
V2 API and MCP rule operations accept and preserve anomaly signal filters. Incident responses include anomaly IDs and group labels. Anomaly previews are rejected, and MCP evaluation output reports skipped previews.
Format anomaly notifications and group labels
packages/backend/src/services/alerts/alert-formatting.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/AlertDeliveryDispatch.ts, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/delivery/*, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/delivery/transports/*, packages/backend/src/services/alerts/alert-email.ts, packages/backend/src/services/push/MobilePushService.ts
Notification formats use anomaly details and severity words. Delivery contexts and transports prefer stored group labels when available; mobile push has anomaly-specific trigger and resolution text.
Display anomaly values and group labels
packages/web-data/src/alerts/*, apps/web/src/page/alerts/*, apps/ios/Maple/Components/AlertFormatting.swift, apps/ios/Maple/Features/Home/HomeView.swift
Web and iOS views format anomaly severity codes and use stored group labels in incident and rule displays.

- MCP says an anomaly rule has no query window to preview instead of
reporting a preview that returned no series.
- iOS shows an anomaly incident's value as Warning or Critical.
- Anomaly rules reject excludeServiceNames rather than dropping it.
- The default-rule guard reads the default rule under the write lock for
  every rule write.
- Anomaly rules never take the orphan path, so a rule disabled mid-tick
cannot send its incidents to a warehouse probe.

F5 / F6: fixed in c62cebf. The protected message now names two actions that exist today: leave the default rule with no destinations, so anomalies stay in the app only, or turn detection off with PATCH /v2/anomalies/settings (enabled: false). It no longer points at a settings screen the dashboard does not have.

F3 (observe re-reads per rule): won't fix for now. An org has one default rule plus a few scoped ones, and each read is one indexed query on small open-incident sets. If counts grow, it becomes one read per org per tick.

Maple review

🟡 Confidence 6/10 · needs attention. Held at 6 because a correctness warning is open.
1 warning −1 · 1 note · tests covered · risk high −1 · 3/3 new units observable

Anomalies now page through alert rules: a new anomaly signal that reads the detector instead of the warehouse, one protected unscoped default rule per org, scoped rules with assignment and handover, and group_label in place of the incident id across transports, MCP, v2 and the dashboard. The implementation reads sound and is well tested; the open v2 enum break for installed iOS builds is the one unresolved issue.

  • AnomalyAlertSource turns the detector's open anomalies into per-rule observations
  • assignAnomalyRule picks the most specific qualifying rule, ties by lowest id
  • One unrouted default anomaly rule per org, guarded from delete, disable and scoping
  • groupLabel replaces the anomaly incident id in channels, MCP, v2 and web

Merged with 3 steps from "Before merge" still open. If they are done, tick them on the review comment; if not, now is the time.

  • Manual · Build the iOS app before shipping: AlertFormatting.swift and HomeView.swift are unbuilt here
  • Migration · Check it is safe on production data and with the code still deployed

Main now has the anomaly stack (#2318-#2320) and escalation chains (#2304).
This branch's own changes are replayed onto main; registrations keep both
the escalation-chain and maintenance-window tools, and a merge migration
joins the maintenance-window and escalation-chain migrations.
