Add experimental X-Wing support to the OpenSSL backend - #915
This PR adds experimental X-Wing support to the OpenSSL backend for key-pair generation, encapsulation, and decapsulation.
X-Wing is a hybrid key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) combining post-quantum ML-KEM-768, standardized by NIST in FIPS 203, with the traditional elliptic-curve mechanism X25519. X-Wing itself is specified in an Internet-Draft; this implementation follows the construction and key encoding in draft-connolly-cfrg-xwing-kem-10.
The PKCS#11 integration is vendor-defined. The proposed CKK_X_WING key type and CKM_X_WING_KEY_PAIR_GEN and CKM_X_WING mechanisms are extensions, not standardized PKCS#11 definitions. They use the existing C_EncapsulateKey and C_DecapsulateKey interface.
Changes
Integrate key objects, attributes, token persistence, and private-key wrapping and unwrapping, using the draft's 32-byte private-seed representation.
Return shared secrets as secret-key objects using the caller's template and support PKCS#8 PEM seed-key import through softhsm2-util.
Tighten validation and shared-secret object handling in the common KEM path, remove plaintext shared-secret logging, and add ML-KEM regression tests.
Add Autotools and CMake feature detection, utility support, documentation, and native tests.
Build requirements
Requires the OpenSSL backend and OpenSSL 3.5 or later with ML-KEM-768 and X25519 available. The construction uses those primitives directly; oqs-provider is not required.
Enable with --enable-xwing (Autotools) or -DENABLE_XWING=ON (CMake). Autotools detects availability by default; CMake defaults to disabled. The implementation targets the linked draft revision.
Testing
The included tests cover all three draft Appendix C vectors, encapsulation and decapsulation, persistence, PKCS#8, wrapping and unwrapping, buffer sizing, invalid inputs, and utility import.
make check and CTest passed with X-Wing enabled. Separate development-time interoperability checks with Bouncy Castle covered encapsulation and decapsulation in both directions, including altered-ciphertext checks.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added optional X-Wing support with OpenSSL 3.5 or later; configuration can detect support automatically, and the feature is disabled by default.
Supports X-Wing key-pair generation, key import, encapsulation and decapsulation, and private-key wrapping and unwrapping.
Added X-Wing mechanisms and key types for use through PKCS #11.
Bug Fixes
Improved encapsulation and decapsulation handling for output-buffer sizing, secret-key lengths, and invalid inputs.
Documentation
Added configuration guidance, OpenSSL requirements, and details about supported X-Wing primitives.
Expose vendor-defined key generation and KEM operations, draft-10 seed keys, PKCS#8 import and wrapping, and dedicated crypto and PKCS#11 tests. Detect the OpenSSL primitives in Autotools and CMake.
The change adds optional OpenSSL-backed X-Wing support. It adds build detection, cryptographic operations, PKCS#11 key and mechanism handling, and PKCS#8 key import. It also adds documentation and tests.

Summary
Configure X-Wing support CMakeLists.txt, README.md, cmake/modules/*, config.h.in.cmake, m4/acx_*
CMake and Autotools add X-Wing options and check for OpenSSL ML-KEM-768 and X25519 support. Botan rejects explicit enablement. The README documents requirements, options, mechanisms, key sizes, and import behavior.
New parameter and key types define X-Wing data handling. OpenSSL-backed operations implement key generation, encapsulation, decapsulation, component-key handling, and shared-secret combination. The crypto factory and build source lists include the implementation.
SoftHSM adds X-Wing object types, mechanisms, key-pair generation, key storage helpers, and private-key wrapping support. PKCS#11 constants and dump-table names include X-Wing entries.
Integrate encapsulation and decapsulation src/lib/SoftHSM.cpp
SoftHSM dispatches X-Wing encapsulation and decapsulation, validates inputs and key types, creates secret-key objects, and handles output sizing and cleanup. ML-KEM paths also change secret truncation and error handling.
The OpenSSL key reader returns PKCS#8 information for algorithm-specific import. X-Wing import creates PKCS#11 key objects. The import test uses a supplied PEM fixture when configured.

Enforce slots.mechanisms in C_GenerateKeyPair for all key-pair mechanisms.
C_GenerateKeyPair never calls isMechanismPermitted. A key-pair mechanism that slots.mechanisms disables still generates a pair. C_GetMechanismInfo rejects the same mechanism with CKR_MECHANISM_INVALID, so the token reports it as unavailable. The new X-Wing dispatch follows this existing pattern. The gap applies to RSA, DSA, EC, DH, GOST, EdDSA, ML-DSA, and ML-KEM too, so this change does not introduce it. Add the check in C_GenerateKeyPair itself, not only in the X-Wing branch. Verify the existing mechanism-configuration tests before merging.

Cover encrypted PKCS#8 input in the X-Wing import test.
No test under src/ passes --file-pin. The encrypted branch of crypto_read_pkcs8_file therefore never runs in the test suite. On that branch, crypto_import_key_pair passes the decrypted key info to the X-Wing dispatch and crypto_save_xwing. The X-Wing test imports only the plaintext xwing-test-key.pem.
Add an encrypted PKCS#8 X-Wing seed key to the test. Import it with --file-pin. The decryption step is generic, so this mainly covers the X-Wing dispatch after decryption.

1754-1761: Trivial · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Add a KEM round trip after the token reopen in testXWingTokenPersistence.
The test reopens the token and checks only the public CKA_VALUE length and the private CKA_VALUE sensitivity error. Neither check reads the private seed bytes. A persisted private seed that differs from the generated one, but has the same valid length, can pass both checks.
After the reopen, encapsulate with the restored public key hPuk. Decapsulate with the restored private key hPrk. Compare the two shared secrets. The round-trip pattern in testXWingEncapsulationDecapsulation in src/lib/test/EncapDecapTests.cpp can guide this step. A mismatched private seed can cause the shared secrets to differ, so the comparison fails.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The new non-Windows CMake fallback selects ../../../lib/ based solely on directory existence. In a multi-configuration build where the module is under a configuration subdirectory, this may select a directory without the module.
The import test fails or skips instead of testing the built module.
This can occur when: A non-Windows CMake multi-configuration build places its SoftHSM module under lib/Debug or lib/Release, with no lib/.libs directory.

Template validation can set rv to an error after startTransaction(), which skips the current abort path. A failed commitTransaction() sets bOK to false, but the current else is not entered. The active transaction can then block cleanup and later database operations.

For lengths below 32, this test compares two values that were shortened by the same requested length. The check value is also derived from each shortened value. Therefore, a common suffix-selection regression in both ML-KEM and X-Wing can pass the test. Decapsulate the same ciphertext once without CKA_VALUE_LEN, then assert that each shortened value equals the leading length bytes of that full value.

src/lib/SoftHSM.cpp:12069-12074 Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Abort the attribute transaction when commitTransaction() fails in generateXWing.
In both the public-key and private-key branches, abortTransaction() runs only when bOK is already false before the commit. If commitTransaction() returns false, no abort runs. The cleanup then calls destroyObject() on the object while its transaction is still open.
For the database backend, a failed commit leaves _transaction set. startTransaction() then fails, so DBToken::deleteObject() returns before remove(). The object row created by createObject() can remain in the token database. If the commit fails with SQLITE_BUSY, the SQL transaction can also stay open. Later startTransaction() calls on that connection then fail until the transaction ends.
DBToken::createObject() and DBToken::deleteObject() already call abortTransaction() after a failed commit. Apply the same pattern in both branches.

Summary
This PR adds experimental X-Wing support to the OpenSSL backend for key-pair generation, encapsulation, and decapsulation.
X-Wing is a hybrid key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) combining post-quantum ML-KEM-768, standardized by NIST in FIPS 203, with the traditional elliptic-curve mechanism X25519. X-Wing itself is specified in an Internet-Draft; this implementation follows the construction and key encoding in draft-connolly-cfrg-xwing-kem-10.
The PKCS#11 integration is vendor-defined. The proposed
CKK_X_WINGkey type andCKM_X_WING_KEY_PAIR_GENandCKM_X_WINGmechanisms are extensions, not standardized PKCS#11 definitions. They use the existingC_EncapsulateKeyandC_DecapsulateKeyinterface.Changes
softhsm2-util.Build requirements
Requires the OpenSSL backend and OpenSSL 3.5 or later with ML-KEM-768 and X25519 available. The construction uses those primitives directly; oqs-provider is not required.
Enable with
--enable-xwing(Autotools) or-DENABLE_XWING=ON(CMake). Autotools detects availability by default; CMake defaults to disabled. The implementation targets the linked draft revision.Testing
The included tests cover all three draft Appendix C vectors, encapsulation and decapsulation, persistence, PKCS#8, wrapping and unwrapping, buffer sizing, invalid inputs, and utility import.
make checkand CTest passed with X-Wing enabled. Separate development-time interoperability checks with Bouncy Castle covered encapsulation and decapsulation in both directions, including altered-ciphertext checks.Summary by CodeRabbit
