What this changes for a person using the tool

  • Snapshots in the window. A "Snapshots..." button beside Export... offers "Take snapshot..." (writes this machine to a file you choose, the same file bws snapshot create writes) and "Compare with this machine..." (reads a snapshot and shows what changed in place of the list: one row per field that differs, entries added and removed, and the caveats above the table). "Back to the list" or Escape returns. Nothing in either changes a service, and a file at the chosen path that is not a snapshot is refused and left as it was.
  • A field Windows refused to both sides is said once. On a real machine some service descriptions point at a language file that is not there, so every comparison listed the same entries as "not fully compared". Such a field is now one caveat line naming the entries. In --json it is a new refusedByBoth list at the end of the document, and those entries are no longer in notFullyCompared. A field only one side holds a value for is still listed against its entry.
  • The narrowest window is 1000 points, up from 900, so the tenth button fits in the bar.

Under the hood

  • The snapshot's file rules moved from Bws.Cli to Bws.Core (SnapshotOnDisk), naming the fault and leaving the sentence to each front end. The command line says the same sentence and ends with the same code for every bad file it did before - checked on six cases against the previous build.
  • The two passes a snapshot reads on top of a listing are one call (SnapshotPasses), shared by snapshot create, snapshot diff --live and the window.
  • Printable (control and text direction characters written as code points) moved to the core, so the window applies it to values read from a snapshot file.
  • The window's work and state live in Snapshotting and DiffSheet, which take a path and can be tested without a file dialog. SnapshotDoors holds the two dialogs and the wiring. DiffView and DiffTable are in the component catalogue.
  • semgrep 1.178.0 -> 1.180.0, the newest stable release today. Licence expression unchanged (LGPL-2.1-or-later). The gate's numbers, measured by this pull request's own Semgrep run (374 rules by semgrep's summary and 419 in the timing list the gate counts, 399 files, zero findings, zero errors), are recorded in .github/requirements-semgrep.txt and .github/scripts/semgrep_gate.py in their own commit.
  • After review: the window asks whether the chosen path may be written before it reads the machine and again right before the write, all of it off the interface thread, and the reason given for an unreadable snapshot file and a field name two files wrote are escaped like every other value from a file.

Checked

  • Narrow test runs: core 78/78, command line 51/51, window classes touched 159/160 then green after fixes, 60/60 and 20/20, architecture 186/186, integration (diff and snapshot contracts) 19/19, prose and supply chain guards 28/28.
  • Mutation runs for the 17 new and 18 re-anchored guard entries: 35 of 35 caught. After review, the touched window classes 23/23, architecture 186/186, and 7 of 7 mutations for the 4 new and 3 re-anchored entries.
  • On this machine, two snapshots taken seconds apart now compare as "No differences." with one caveat line naming 10 entries, where they used to list those 10 entries as not fully compared.

Not checked

  • The comparison in the live window by eye. The file dialogs are opened by no test, and the screenshot probe was refused the foreground. The table was read from the live component catalogue by UI Automation instead.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The window gains a "Snapshots..." button beside Export... with two items.
"Take snapshot..." writes this machine to a file the person chooses, the
same file bws snapshot create writes. "Compare with this machine..."
reads a snapshot and shows what changed since it in place of the list:
one row per field that differs, entries added and removed, and above the
table everything that makes the comparison less than exact. "Back to the
list" or Escape returns. Nothing here changes a service, and a file at
the chosen path that is not a snapshot is refused and left as it was.

To give the window the same rules the command line has, the snapshot's
file rules (size ceiling, UTF-8 only, folder, only a snapshot is ever
replaced) moved from Bws.Cli to Bws.Core as SnapshotOnDisk, which names
the fault and leaves the sentence to each front end. The two passes a
snapshot reads on top of a listing moved to SnapshotPasses, and the
helper that writes control and text direction characters out as code
points moved to the core so the window applies it to values read from
a file somebody else wrote. The command line says exactly what it said
before for every bad file.

A comparison no longer lists, entry by entry, a field Windows refused to
both sides. On a real machine some service descriptions point at a
language file that is not there, and every comparison listed the same
entries as not fully compared. Such a field is now one caveat line naming
the entries, and in --json a new refusedByBoth list at the end of the
document. Those entries are no longer in notFullyCompared. A field one
side holds a value for and the other does not is still listed against
its entry, and that sentence now says "holds no value for".

The narrowest window is 1000 points, up from 900, so the tenth button
fits in the bar of actions.

semgrep moves from 1.178.0 to 1.180.0, the newest stable release on the
package index today. Its licence expression is unchanged. The gate's
numbers are measured again by this pull request's own run.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

The new GUI snapshot path performs blocking disk work on the UI thread. TakeAsync resumes on the UI context after await Task.Run(...).ConfigureAwait(true) at src/Bws.Gui/ViewModels/Snapshotting.cs:88-95, then calls synchronous SnapshotOnDisk.WhyNotWritten and AtomicFile.Write at lines 95 and 102. WhyNotWritten can read and parse an existing file up to 64 MiB (SnapshotOnDisk.cs:133-143, 234-256), and AtomicFile.Write performs synchronous file write and move operations (AtomicFile.cs:54-87). A slow disk or existing large file can therefore freeze the window.

Resolution

Keep all snapshot disk validation and writing off the UI thread. Move SnapshotOnDisk.WhyNotWritten and AtomicFile.Write into the existing Task.Run operation, or use properly awaited asynchronous file APIs. Return only the refusal/result to the UI thread before updating messages and state.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The PR starts snapshot work with Task.Run in Snapshotting.TakeAsync and CompareAsync (lines 88-93 and 147). The new operation reads two passes and is documented as taking about 1.1–1.2 seconds (SnapshotPasses.cs lines 16-19), but it has no cancellation token or progress reporting. Busy prevents duplicate starts, but it only disables the button. More importantly, MainWindow.OnClosing waits only for _running, which tracks plan execution, not Snapshotting; the new Closed handler also only stops list watching. Therefore a snapshot read, comparison, file write, or UI continuation can remain active while the window closes. The new AtomicFile.Write call is atomic, and the generated snapshot name uses invariant culture, so those conditions are not failures.

Resolution

Track the active snapshot task in the window lifecycle. On close, cancel it or prevent closing until it completes, then detach snapshot event handlers before the window is disposed. Pass a CancellationToken through Task.Run, SnapshotPasses, and the underlying reads, and add progress or a visible cancel action for the multi-pass operation. Keep Busy as the double-execution guard.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The new snapshot parser has a size-check race that can make it read an unbounded file. SnapshotOnDisk.TryLoad checks FileInfo.Length at lines 175-180, then opens the path separately at line 182. ReadText uses File.OpenRead and StreamReader.ReadToEnd() at lines 282-288. A file can be replaced or grow between these operations, so malformed or concurrent huge input can cause excessive allocation or an out-of-memory failure. The same race exists in WhyNotASnapshot at lines 238-243, which the new GUI write path uses through Snapshotting.TakeAsync. The new GUI comparison path reaches TryLoad through Snapshotting.Compared at lines 217-220.

Resolution

Replace the separate FileInfo.Length check and StreamReader.ReadToEnd() calls with one bounded read helper. Open the file once with FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, and suitable sharing options. Read at most SnapshotOnDisk.Biggest + 1 bytes, reject the extra byte as DiskFault.TooBig, then decode the bounded bytes with strict UTF-8 and BOM detection before calling SnapshotJson.TryRead. Use this helper in both TryLoad and WhyNotASnapshot. Add a regression test that changes or grows the file after the initial size observation and verifies refusal without unbounded allocation.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

New snapshot errors explain the failure but do not tell the user what to do next. For example, gui.snapshot.fault.notUtf8, notASnapshot, tooBig, and unreadable only describe the file, while gui.snapshot.cannotCompare only says that nothing was compared. Snapshotting displays these messages directly through CouldNotDo (Snapshotting.cs:112-120, 154-167, 226), so the omission reaches the window. The new comparison text also calls removed entries “Gone” in gui.diff.row.removed but “removed” in gui.diff.counts (gui.en.json:491, 498), which names the same result inconsistently.

Resolution

Add an explicit next step to each new failure message. For example: “The file is not UTF-8. Choose a UTF-8 snapshot file and try again.”, “The file is not a snapshot this version can read. Choose another snapshot file.”, “The snapshot could not be written. Choose another writable file or try again.”, and “Nothing was compared. Choose a readable snapshot and try again.” Preserve the existing detail after the action. Rename “Gone since the snapshot” to “Removed since the snapshot” so the row and count use the same term.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The PR adds two uncancellable background tasks in src/Bws.Gui/ViewModels/Snapshotting.cs: TakeAsync and CompareAsync call Task.Run(...) without a CancellationToken. Closing the window only stops the existing list timer in MainWindow.NothingIsWatching(); it does not cancel or await either snapshot task. The task can continue reading SCM entries, binaries, and dependents after the window closes, retaining Snapshotting and its model until completion.

Resolution

Add a CancellationTokenSource and a tracked current task to Snapshotting. Cancel it during window closing and await it before the window closes. Pass the token through SnapshotPasses, SecondPass, RequiredByPass, and the underlying catalog/inspector loops so cancellation stops the actual SCM and file work, not only task scheduling. Dispose the token source after completion.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The feature scope is documented in the title, description, README, and CHANGELOG, and the new window components use the existing catalogue and core layers. However, the PR changes the public Bws.Core.Snapshots.SnapshotDiff positional constructor from eight parameters to nine by inserting RefusedByBoth (src/Bws.Core/Snapshots/SnapshotDiff.cs:111-120). Existing callers therefore fail to compile or load. Bws.Core is listed as a shipped assembly in tests/Bws.Architecture.Tests/GuardedAssemblies.cs:15-16. The description has no Breaking changes section and the PR adds no compatibility constructor or fallback. The JSON diff contract also changes the meaning of notFullyCompared and adds refusedByBoth, although the README and CHANGELOG do document that behavior.

Resolution

Add a ## Breaking changes section to the PR description. Preserve the old eight-argument SnapshotDiff constructor with a compatibility overload that supplies an empty RefusedByBoth, or make the release explicitly breaking. Document the JSON consumer migration: readers must handle refusedByBoth; provide a versioned or legacy output path if existing consumers must retain the old notFullyCompared semantics.

Taking a snapshot in the window read the whole machine first and only
then asked whether the chosen path may be written. A file there that is
not a snapshot was refused after the second the reading takes, and the
ask itself, which may read that file up to the size ceiling, ran on the
interface thread together with the write. Now the target is asked about
before the reading and again right before the write, and all of it runs
off the interface thread. The second ask is the one that keeps a file
that turns up during the reading from being written over.

Two sentences the window builds from a foreign file now escape control
and text direction characters like every other value from one. The
reason given for a snapshot file that could not be read quotes its path
in most cases. And a field neither side read is named by the files
themselves, which two files decide once both sides of a comparison are
files.

The version moved to 1.180.0 earlier in this pull request, and the
numbers the gate cites were still those of 1.177.0. This pull request's
own Semgrep run is the new measurement: semgrep ran 374 rules over 399
files with zero findings, and the gate read zero errors at level error
and 419 rules. The two rule counts are one run read two ways, semgrep's
summary against the timing list the gate counts. The runs on both
commits of this pull request gave the same numbers.

The files read are 399 of 743 because semgrep's default ignore patterns
leave out tests/ (336 files) and the pictures are not read. Both floors
of the gate still stand far under a healthy run, which is what they are
for: 200 files and 50 rules. The count at level warn was not taken
again, since the gate prints only the level it blocks on, and the text
now says that instead of repeating the 1.177.0 count as current.
