What this changes

A GitHub button in the window. Left of Donate at the right end of the row above the search box: GitHub | Donate | Help. It opens https://github.com/donislawdev/BetterWindowsServices in the browser through ExternalLinks, the same two ways as the other pages (an elevated window hands the address to the desktop, so the browser does not get administrator rights) and the same sentences when the shell refuses or is slow. No new call into the shell. Text only, the way Help is.

An OSV-Scanner gate (.github/workflows/osv-scanner.yml):

  • OSV-Scanner runs on every pull request, every push to main and every Monday at 06:00 UTC, and fails on any advisory, whatever its severity.
  • OSV-Scanner report runs on push and schedule only and uploads SARIF to the Security tab under the category osv-scanner. It is the only job with security-events: write, and it runs no restore, no resolver and no scanner image - only GitHub's own actions on the file the scan job handed over.

Why it is built this way - measured, not assumed

  • OSV-Scanner does not read .csproj files, and this repository commits no lock file. A scan of the tree as it stands would read no NuGet package at all and report clean. The scan job therefore restores with RestorePackagesWithLockFile=true and names one lock file per tracked project. The lock files are not committed - GitHub's dependency graph does not read them for NuGet either.
  • The scanner's own resolution of semgrep==1.180.0 reported eleven advisories in anyio 4.9.0, idna 3.9.0 and python-multipart 0.0.9. The Semgrep job of Take and compare snapshots in the window #61 installed anyio 4.15.1, idna 3.20 and python-multipart 0.0.32, and those 66 packages scanned as installed carry none. So the job asks pip install --dry-run --report what it would install and scans that with --no-resolve.
  • The scanner runs as an image named by digest (.github/osv-scanner/Dockerfile, v2.6.0), with a new Dependabot docker entry for it. The scanner's own action runs ghcr.io/google/osv-scanner-action:<tag>, so pinning that action would have pinned nothing that runs.
  • The verdict is read from the report by .github/scripts/osv_gate.py. It refuses an unreadable report, a tracked project whose lock file was not scanned, and a run whose canary (Newtonsoft.Json 12.0.3 and requests 2.19.1, both with old advisories) came back clean.

Checked

  • Window tests for the touched classes: 93 of 93, then the two moved tests and ExternalLinksGuards: 14 of 14. Architecture: 185 of 186 on the first run (SizeRatchetGuards, a test file that grew into the near-ceiling crowd - the two tests moved to GitHubButtonGuards), then the four touched guard classes 31 of 31.
  • Two new mutation entries, both caught.
  • The gate against real scanner output on this repository: 11 of 11 files read, 190 packages, 0 advisories. Every refusal path returned 1 or 2 as designed, including a broken copy of the gate, which the canary run reported.

Not checked here

  • The workflow has not run anywhere yet. This pull request is its first run - in particular the restore of the Windows projects on a Linux runner and the docker mount.
  • That a press of the GitHub button opens the page. A test that pressed it would open a browser on whoever runs the suite.
  • The SARIF upload, which runs only after merge (push to main).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a GitHub button beside Donate for quick access to the project’s source code, issues, and releases. Links open in your browser, including when the app is running with administrator privileges.
  • Security
    • Added automated vulnerability scanning for project dependencies, with findings reported in GitHub’s Security tab.

The window gets a GitHub button left of Donate at the right end of the top row. It hands the
project's repository page to the browser through ExternalLinks, the same two ways and the same
sentences as the query language page, and adds no new call into the shell. Two guards in a new
GitHubButtonGuards class hold the https address the tooltip names and the button's place - one gap
left of Donate and clear of the positions in the narrowest window - each with a mutation entry.

OSV-Scanner runs on every pull request, on every push to main and every Monday. The pull request
check blocks on any advisory. Push and schedule also upload SARIF to the Security tab from a
separate job that holds the only write scope and runs no third-party code.

Nothing is found by searching the tree, and both reasons were measured. OSV-Scanner does not read
.csproj files and this repository commits no lock file, so the job restores with lock files on and
names one per tracked project. Asked to resolve semgrep==1.180.0 by itself, the scanner picked
anyio 4.9.0, idna 3.9.0 and python-multipart 0.0.9 and reported eleven advisories, while the
Semgrep job had installed 4.15.1, 3.20 and 0.0.32, which carry none. So the job asks pip what it
would install and scans that with resolution off.

The scanner runs as an image named by digest in .github/osv-scanner/Dockerfile, watched by a new
Dependabot docker entry, because the scanner's own action runs an image by tag. The verdict is read
from the report by .github/scripts/osv_gate.py, which refuses an unreadable report, a file that was
meant to be scanned and was not, and a run whose canary - two packages with old advisories - came
back clean.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to af32b

The new scanning workflow can upload findings that point to files the repository does not contain. Security alerts may therefore attach poorly or not at all. Its gate script can also crash on malformed input. The GitHub button change itself looks low risk. Fix or accept the alert-mapping issue before merging.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The PR adds non-UI runtime behavior that hands the new GitHub address to the shell through ExternalLinks.OpenRepositoryPageAsync and the MainWindow click handler. The added tests cover the constant, tooltip, and layout only. GitHubButtonGuards explicitly does not test a press, and existing ExternalLinksGuards tests exercise the generic helper with the support URL, not the new repository route or handler wiring. No deleted, skipped, or weakened test assertions were found.

Resolution

Add a deterministic test for the GitHub click path. Refactor the link handover or window wiring to inject a fake opener, then assert that clicking Scope.GitHub invokes the repository opener and routes refusal or timeout text through OpenPage without launching a real browser. Keep the existing URL and layout tests.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The new GitHub route creates a new ShellHandover instance. If the shell call exceeds 10 seconds, ShellHandover.Ask() returns a slow message but leaves its IsBackground STA thread running. MainWindow.Closed only stops watchers and does not cancel this handover. Therefore a GitHub click can continue shell work after the window closes.

Resolution

Make ShellHandover close-aware and cancellable. Register the repository handover with MainWindow, cancel it during Closed, prevent any late Process.Start or desktop-shell call, and await or safely terminate the owned operation before releasing the window.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

New JSON handling can crash or exhaust resources. .github/scripts/osv_gate.py:80-91 uses json.load with no byte or depth limit and catches only OSError/ValueError. pins assumes every install item is a dictionary at lines 100-103; packages makes the same assumption for results and packages entries at lines 119-122; verdict assumes each advisory is a dictionary at lines 200-202. Valid JSON with wrong nested types can therefore raise AttributeError or TypeError, and a huge or deeply nested report can exhaust memory or recursion. The workflow supplies pip and scanner reports at .github/workflows/osv-scanner.yml:97, 118, and 161. The output API is also unsafe: open(out, "w", ...) at line 111 follows an arbitrary path and symlink, while the workflow writes .github/semgrep.installed.txt at line 118; that generated path is not present in the base tree and a checkout can provide it as a symlink.

Resolution

Replace json.load with a bounded read (MAX_BYTES plus rejection of oversized input), strict UTF-8/JSON parsing, an explicit depth limit, and complete schema validation before traversal. Treat wrong nested types, RecursionError, and resource failures as status 2. Replace open(out, "w") with a fixed output path or an exact checkout-path allowlist and an atomic write that uses O_NOFOLLOW (or replaces the symlink itself), so .., absolute paths, and symlinks cannot escape the intended directory.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The new ExternalLinks.Repository handover at src/Bws.Gui/ExternalLinks.cs:120 invokes ShellHandover. ShellHandover.OnItsOwnThread creates a dedicated STA Thread at src/Bws.Gui/ShellHandover.cs:70-77. Ask returns whenSlow after 10 seconds, but it does not cancel or stop that thread. If the shell call hangs, the GitHub button leaves the thread and its task alive for the rest of the process. Repeated presses join the same task, so this is a persistent thread leak rather than normal accumulation.

Resolution

Add a cancellation and shutdown path to the GitHub handover. Track the dedicated STA thread and cancel the pending operation when the window closes; ensure the shell operation can observe cancellation or move it to a bounded helper process that can be terminated. Release all COM objects created by Desktop() on success, no-desktop, and exception paths, and dispose or join the handover before the window is discarded.

Map SARIF findings to tracked files before the upload.

The scan writes packages.lock.json and .github/semgrep.installed.txt only in the scan job. The report job checks out a fresh tree and downloads only osv.sarif. Results that reference those generated files can fail to map to repository files and lose source-based alert fingerprinting.

Before handing over the SARIF, map each result location to its tracked owner:

  • packages.lock.json findings → the owning .csproj.
  • .github/semgrep.installed.txt findings → .github/requirements-semgrep.txt.

Set each result location’s physicalLocation.artifactLocation.uri to the tracked path while preserving the existing runs[].results[] structure. Test the upload with a known advisory on a non-pull-request run.

Review comment at @.github/workflows/osv-scanner.yml around lines 191 - 194:
Before the upload-sarif step, update the downloaded osv.sarif so result
locations referencing packages.lock.json point to the owning .csproj and
locations referencing .github/semgrep.installed.txt point to
.github/requirements-semgrep.txt. Change only each result location’s
physicalLocation.artifactLocation.uri and preserve the existing runs[].results[]
structure.

Two findings from the review of the pull request, both checked against the code first.

The gate checked only that a report was a JSON object. A report whose results were a string, or
a package entry that was a number, would have crashed on the first lookup and exited 1, which
reads as "found something" rather than "could not read". Every command now checks the shape of
each record it reads and refuses a wrong one with exit 2 and the place named. Files over 64 MB
and nesting deep enough to exhaust the parser are refused the same way. Eleven malformed inputs
were run through it, and each one exited 2.

The SARIF pointed at the lock files and the pip list, which exist only inside the scan job, so an
alert would have pointed at nothing in the repository. A new sarif step moves every location to
the tracked file behind it - a project's lock file to that project's .csproj, the pip list to
.github/requirements-semgrep.txt - and refuses a location that belongs to neither, leaving the
file untouched. Results, rules and fingerprints stay as the scanner wrote them. It runs on every
event, so a pull request proves it before the first upload does.

Each permission in the workflow now carries a comment, the wording for actions and contents
taken from GitHub's own upload example.
