Summary

The navbar search only went to the Explore page, so reaching a repository of one of your organizations took a search or a detour through its owner. Signed in, focusing the field (or pressing /) now opens GitHub's jump-to under it.

What it lists

  • Your five most recently updated repositories, and your organizations.
  • Typing filters both. Repositories match on the owner too (acme finds acme/webapp), as GitHub's does. Forgejo's search only matches names, so its results are merged with owner matches from your 50 most recent repositories.
  • A last row searches all repositories for the text on the Explore page, as Enter did before.

Keyboard and screen readers

  • Typing highlights the first match. ↑/↓ move the highlight, Enter opens it, and Escape closes the list.
  • Enter while an input method is composing, and Enter before new results arrive, behave as before.
  • The field is a combobox with a listbox of grouped options, and the browser's own suggestions are turned off.

Where the data comes from

  • Repositories come from Forgejo's /repo/search, the same source as Home's top repositories.
  • Organizations come from the personal settings' list that the owner switcher already reads (data-theme-organization). If that list fails, the group is left out and the next opening tries again.

Other details

  • The design is the one picked from rendered variants: rows 32px tall, 16px at the sides, group titles 8px above and 4px below, and a line between groups.
  • Labels are Forgejo's own: home.my_repos, home.my_orgs, explore, search.no_results and error.network_error.
  • Signed out, or below 1012px where the field is hidden, nothing changes.

Before and after

Home (/), 1280×760, dark, signed in as alex, the search field focused. After: focused, then with acme typed.

Before After
Before: the focused search field shows nothing After: repositories and organizations under the field, then filtered to acme with a search-all row

Release notes

  • The title follows Area: Description with a listed area
  • The title describes the effect in the past tense
  • Exactly one label: feature
  • bug only for a bug that shipped in a release (not applicable)
  • major not needed
  • No upgrade steps

Checks

  • components/dashboard/jump/jump.test.ts adds 12 tests. They cover:
    • focus loading;
    • owner matching without duplicates;
    • arrow-key wrapping;
    • what Enter does on a repository row and on the search row;
    • Escape;
    • organization-list retries;
    • off-site links (https://, javascript:, //, /\) becoming #;
    • results for superseded text;
    • IME composition;
    • the browser's second Escape.
  • bun bundle and bun vitest pass (580 tests), and Prettier is clean.
  • Checked headlessly in the dev preview in dark and light:
    • focus, typing, ↑/↓, Enter on a row and on the search row, a click on an organization, and Escape;
    • no console errors;
    • the accessibility tree is listbox → groups → options.
  • The field is hidden on phones, so there's nothing to check at phone width.

The navbar search only went to the Explore page, so a repository of one
of your organizations took a search or a detour through the owner.
Focusing the field now opens GitHub's jump-to: your five most recently
updated repositories and your organizations. Typing filters both, also
matching a repository's owner as GitHub does, and adds a last row that
searches all repositories with the text. Arrow keys move the highlight,
Enter opens it, Escape closes the list. Repositories come from Forgejo's
repository search, organizations from the personal settings' list the
owner switcher reads. Signed out, the field searches as before.
