Summary

This branch makes the agent's outputs honest and fixes the bugs found by driving it live. It is 16 commits on top of main (a9d74c2).

  • Fabrication sweep (e136c2e, 69342b6, 9372bf7, f57768f). Fixed literal confidences, scores and seeded data that were presented as measurements. Missing measurements now read as null or not_measured. Named states live in app/utils/confidence.py. A new AST scanner (scripts/find_literal_judgements.py) gates the count of reviewed literals: 130 unallowed before, 0 after, with each allowed site carrying a reason.
  • Live bug fixed (6e52661). A NEUTRAL 24h model read was published as BEARISH, because the aggregator mapped anything other than BULLISH to −1. Verified on the live endpoint: /v1/predict/btc now returns NEUTRAL.
  • Live capital (9372bf7). /v1/trading/live/intelligence no longer uses fixed correlation, ATR, profit factor or confidence. Drawdown and loss streak are required. Missing inputs return not_measured. Attribution is POST-only on supplied trades. The conservative rationale no longer claims an unmeasured "multi-agent consensus".
  • Analytics and learning (9372bf7). Provider intelligence is derived from observed calls, and cells with fewer than 5 calls are reported as insufficient. The performance tracker now computes from recorded outcomes instead of logging only and returning a fixed model name.
  • Earlier phases (405f593…c922748). Self-healing schema, no internal-error leaks, bounded stores with a memory guard, rate-limit configuration with Retry-After, Forge output verification, a cache namespace fix, and a futuris prose-reply fix.

Verification

  • Full suite on the tip: pytest exit 0, ruff clean, mypy clean (241 files).
  • Regression file tests/test_fabricated_state_batch.py (29 tests). Against the pre-batch code, 26 of 27 original tests fail; the one passing test checks the allowlist format. The NEUTRAL and conservative-rationale tests were each checked by stashing the fix and watching the test fail.
  • Live agent restarted on the new build. Checked: /v1/analytics/provider-intel (200), /v1/admin/reliability (200), /v1/ecosystem/meta (200, not_measured), /v1/trading/live/*, /v1/predict/btc.

Known gaps (not in this PR)

  • Sensitivity probe: /v1/trading/live/attribution looks insensitive only because all three probe bodies produce one winning trade. /experiments and rotate-key need experiment_type and old_key. Degraded 0.0 outputs (forge/debug, multimodal) are counted as insensitive.
  • Still constant by design, to be decided: /v1/friday/ask (0.8), /v1/astra/reason (0.55), /v1/debate (0.8/0.2), /v1/forge/plan-architecture (0.55).
  • Local model rig only: the real LLM providers are unreachable from this sandbox, so output quality has not been checked against a real model.

Notes for review

  • The "secret" matches in the diff are fake credentials inside tests that check redaction (for example the AWS documentation example key and sk-abcdefghijklmnop12345).
  • The trading-consult change (N≥20 panel confidence now capped at the unverified prior and scaled by participation) is not in this PR. It is untested and is being reviewed separately.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for self-hosted inference providers, with improved fallback and provider-health handling.
    • Added memory diagnostics, bounded-history reporting, and clearer metrics for requests and deliberations.
    • Added tools for probing live-service behavior, resource use, and sensitivity to input changes.
  • Improvements

    • Analytics and predictions distinguish measured results from missing, simulated, or unverified data.
    • Requests now receive clearer validation and sanitized error responses; cache entries are isolated by endpoint and context.
    • Trading and strategy evaluations require more complete inputs and avoid reporting unsupported estimates.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved recovery from provider failures, timeouts, interrupted tasks, and database initialization issues.

…r guard

Three defects found by driving the restored tree rather than trusting state:

1. A clean database broke /v1/trading/consult with HTTP 500 "no such table:
tasks". TradingConsultService builds its own SQLiteMemory and nothing ever
called initialize(), so the endpoint only worked where another component had
already created the schema - a hidden dependency on leftover state, exposed
the moment data/universe.db was deleted (tests/test_api_contract_fuzz.py
reproduced it: 500 on three schema-valid bodies). SQLiteMemory.connect() now
ensures the schema once per instance (ensure_schema + _create_schema split,
initialize() forces the check), and tests/test_memory_self_heal.py pins both
the store and the route, including that DDL runs once, not per call.

2. That 500 also returned the raw exception text to the client. Measured: a
RuntimeError carrying "password=hunter2" and an absolute path came straight
back in the response body. The failure path now logs with a correlation id
(exc_info) and returns a generic detail carrying only that id.

3. Allocator high-water, quantified: over 1,600 /ask requests at concurrency 6
with tracemalloc OFF, live Python blocks returned to their baseline exactly
(403,456 at rest, 698,136 under load, 404,371 idle) while RSS ended 1.3 MB
higher - and the earlier rounds showed 9-18 KB/request. glibc keeps freed
arenas mapped; on a small container that ratchets to an OOM kill. Added
   app/utils/memory_guard.py: traffic-aware malloc_trim, attempted only when the
resident set is above MEMORY_TRIM_THRESHOLD_MB and no request is in flight,
wired into RequestMetricsMiddleware, published in /metrics/runtime, and
manually triggerable via GET /memory/diagnostics?action=trim even when the
debug diagnostics flag is off. New scripts: memory_forensics.py (heap vs
file, blocks vs C memory) and rss_decompose.py; /memory/diagnostics gained
action=blocks (live object census without tracemalloc) and the real-time
drive's resource_ceiling check now distinguishes a filling store from a leak
and requires sustained growth before calling one.

Also restores the working tree after the sandbox reset (git history was
recreated from scratch; contents are unchanged).

Suite: 439 passed. ruff clean, mypy clean.

…ing 222.5 MB

The real-time drive now ends with an authoritative memory check instead of guessing
from RSS, because three separate measurements showed the RSS-only rules were wrong
about this service:

* 1,600 /ask requests, tracemalloc off: live Python blocks return exactly to
  baseline (403,456 rest -> 698,136 load -> 404,371 idle) while RSS ends 1.3 MB
  higher.
* A sample taken 1 s after a burst read +602,105 blocks, and 40 s later the same
process read *below* its pre-burst value: in-flight work, not retention.
* The same drive that "failed" the RSS rule (1.6 MB/round, sustained) measured +3
  blocks over the entire run.

So check_resource_ceiling keeps the store audit and the RSS arithmetic (with the
filling-store and sustained-growth distinctions, and now the per-request KB budget
as the only RSS-derived metric with teeth), and reports the RSS trend as
informational whenever the agent exposes the block counter. check_memory_retention
runs last - after ~2 minutes of subsequent checks - polls until the count holds
still across four readings, and decides on objects: PASS is +-20k blocks, and an
unsettled sample yields "inconclusive" rather than a verdict. Result on a full
drive: 12/12 checks, blocks 559,541 -> 559,545 (+4) over ~3,600 requests.

The allocator guard is now measured doing real work: 102 trims reclaimed 222.5 MB
cumulatively across that drive, against a light-burst run where the same guard
reclaimed 0.0 MB because glibc had no whole free arena to return. Both readings are
recorded in the module docstring rather than the flattering one, and the guard had
two of its own bugs fixed on the way (it ignored MEMORY_TRIM_* entirely, and its
"consider a trim every 25 completions while idle" gate made it dead code under
concurrency - 1,500 requests, trims: 0). It now considers on every idle completion
with a bounded RSS read interval, and an idle watchdog covers the quiet tail after
a burst. #63 and #64 verified fixed with regression tests (the #63 test was
confirmed to fail against the old 0.90 default).

… literals

Found by a static sweep for the class of bug fixed on the trading route - every
place that interpolated an exception into a client-visible field. Four routes had
it, and the tests proved each one leaks:

* /v1/ask (panel unavailable + deliberation failed): the failure path embedded
``{exc}`` in ``answer``. Measured in the test: "password=s3cr3t-marker-2b1c" came
back to the client inside the answer text. ``failure_state`` carried the raw
exception too, which for a real panel means every specialist's provider message.
* /v1/debate: the same shape in both ``answer`` and ``failure_state`` - measured,
the six-specialist failure text repeated in full in both fields.
* /v1/ask and /v1/debate in app/api/routes.py, and the FRIDAY gateway:
``detail=f"... failed: {exc!s}"``, the original bug in three more places.
* The engine composed those failure strings itself (``f"{agent.id}: {exc}"``), so
provider text entered the response before any route saw it.

Now: app/utils/errors.py owns the decision. internal_error() logs with a
correlation id and returns a detail carrying only that id; unavailable_detail()
publishes specialist ids and failure *kinds* (AgentCallUnavailable, TimeoutError,
...) and drops the provider's message; the engine records the exception type
explicitly, so the 503 stays informative. A legacy test that asserted the raw
gateway text ("simulated outage") must appear in the 503 was updated to the safe
form of the same intent, with the reason recorded in the file.

Also hardened the scrubber, because the leak path is exactly where upstream 401
bodies arrive: scrub_credentials now redacts bare provider key literals
(sk-/sk-or-v1-/gsk_/hf_/nvapi-/xai-/pplx-/cohere-/AIza/r8_/mistral-) that the
named-field pattern missed - a provider that echoes the key it rejected usually
writes it bare. The word-boundary plus case sensitivity keeps benign text
("task-...", "risk-assessment-...", "sk-learn") untouched, which the tests assert
in both directions.

New: tests/test_internal_errors_never_leak.py (17 tests) covers the helper, the
scrubber, and four routes. Suite 467 passed; ruff clean; mypy clean (239 files).

…ion harness

Found by driving a second agent instance against a rig told to fail.

* POST /v1/trading/consult capped each bot at a module constant of 20/hour that
could only be changed by editing app/routers/trading.py, and the 429 carried no
Retry-After - measured in the mixed soak, that endpoint answered 92 x 429 in a
60 s round (every attempt) with the body naming the limit and the headers
describing the *global* middleware limit instead. The ceiling now reads
TRADING_CONSULT_RATE_LIMIT_PER_HOUR (default 20, same behaviour), the 429 answers
with Retry-After computed from the oldest timestamp in the window, and the
message names the setting to change. Three tests pin it.

* scripts/fault_injection.py drives one agent through: healthy baseline, every rig
call failing 500, every call slow (3s), every call sleeping past the client
  deadline, then recovery - across /v1/friday/ask, /v1/ask, /v1/debate and
/v1/trading/consult. Result: 14/14 honest. The outage degrades in band
(DEGRADED/ERROR at confidence 0.0) or answers a truthful 503; the slow path
answers in 12.2s with the same honesty; the deadline path answers at 20.0s
instead of hanging; recovery is immediate. The harness had three bugs of its own,
each fixed and documented: it judged a healthy SUCCESS as dishonest, it mistook a
dedup cache hit for a working provider (identical question text returns the first
answer), and it set hang_seconds without selecting the hang fault, so nothing
  was injected at all.

* scripts/local_model_server.py accepts {"*": ...} in fail_for, so 'every provider is
down' is expressible without killing the rig or pointing the agent at a dead port.

* scripts/soak_mixed.py (30-minute mixed soak) now judges live blocks *per request*
and requires the per-round deltas to still be climbing before calling retention,
because a continuously loaded process can never be sampled quiet; the quiet-process
verdict stays in the drive's memory_retention check.

* GET /tasks/{id} serves the stored task metadata back, so the raw exception text
written by the v1 failure paths leaked one request later; metadata is now scrubbed
both at write time and on read.

Recovery note: a sandbox reset left the local branch at a9d74c2 and dropped the unpushed
local commits (b02d581, 3093ca5, 6da7e7e). Their content was recovered from the working
tree snapshot and committed here on top of origin/arena/f706c17c-inference (1fab826).

Changes in this commit:
- Forge generation: outputs are parsed before they are reported; confidence 0.92 only when
a real parser verified the output, 0.55 unverified, 0.0 and no code when invalid
  (app/services/code_generation.py, quality_assurance.py).
- Forge review: evidence-based static checks, SQL taint tracking, verdict approve only with
  a parsed model review (app/services/code_review.py).
- Forge debugging: validated JSON contract; "Not diagnosed" at confidence 0.0 with no patch
  (app/services/debugging.py, app/utils/model_json.py).
- Response cache: every get_query/set_query call names its producing endpoint via a required
keyword namespace; friday keys include a hash of context_data; wrong-shape values are
  misses (app/performance_cache.py, friday_routes.py, instant_routes.py, agent_routes.py,
  providers/unified_manager.py). Fixes HTTP 500 on /v1/friday/ask and /v1/friday/debate.
- Tests: tests/test_forge_output_is_verified.py, test_forge_code_review_is_evidence_based.py,
  test_forge_debug_is_evidence_based.py, test_cache_namespaces_and_shapes.py.
- Harness: scripts/sensitivity_probe.py, operator_tour.py, real_life_drive.py resource verdict.

Verification: full pytest exit 0; ruff clean; mypy app clean (240 files).

…hetic data

Found by the sensitivity probe: judgement fields that did not change between different
inputs, and fixed facts served as measurements. Each source was read before the change.

- Regime robustness and strategy evaluation: no built-in regime results or backtest
defaults; missing inputs return not_measured / NOT_EVALUATED with no score.
- Overfitting and strategy request models: Sharpe, PF, trades and trials are required;
the output labels itself a summary-statistics proxy, not a measured PBO.
- Market data: symbols and intervals validated before any URL; the synthetic fallback is
labelled synthetic_baseline; news returns no items instead of three invented headlines.
- Trajectory forecast and /v1/trading/predict: refuses to forecast on synthetic data;
missing indicators are listed, not defaulted; attributions are shares of the measured
contributions; no fixed 65000 start price.
- On-chain analytics: not_measured with null fields instead of fixed network figures.
- Sentiment: empty feed is NO_DATA, not a neutral 0.0.
- Deliberation: specialist bias from inputs or UNKNOWN; confidence null where unmeasured;
no literal 0.85/0.82/0.88; crash on missing candles fixed.
- Futuris: no fixed risks, dissent or invented macro event; agents_consulted only when a
model was called; confidence_adjustment null; no hard-coded grounding series; probability
  not defaulted to 0.80.
- Confidence literals (ASTRA 0.95, plan-architecture 0.94, multimodal 0.88, trading consult,
friday stream) replaced with named states in app/utils/confidence.py.

Tests: tests/test_no_fabricated_judgements.py (40). Falsified against the pre-change code:
36 FAIL; the 4 that pass are controls (verdict follows backtest, attributions sum to 100,
constant ordering, literal scan of an already-clean file).
Verification: full pytest exit 0, ruff clean, mypy clean (241 files).

…robe: 3 variants, pattern-aware strings, 201 is success

Live /v1/futuris/enhance returned 500 whenever the model answered in prose: extract_json_object raises ValueError and the caller did not catch it (app/services/futuris_enhancement.py:132). Now reports qualitative_review_status=unparsed. Falsified: with the guard removed the prose test fails with JSONDecodeError.

Probe: overfitting-check was called fixed (PBO 0.8) only because variants 5 and 17 both saturate the formula; a third variant (2) now makes insensitivity require identity across all three. String values honour the schema pattern; minProperties objects get an entry; 201 counts as success.

… fixed sentinel/intelx/technical numbers

- Agent defaults (base/reasoning/adjudication/trading_analyst) use UNVERIFIED_MODEL_CONFIDENCE;
no-assessment and no-output paths use DEGRADED_CONFIDENCE; adjudicator labels its confidence as an
  uncalibrated heuristic.
- Sentinel: confidence, attack-path probability, node likelihood and dissent are no longer fixed
literals; unrated paths are labelled as templates.
- IntelX: unrated source credibility is None (unverified); planner/timeline/critic confidences None.
- Technical patterns: confidence None instead of 0.82/0.78/0.70.
- Trading, experiments, distillation, memora and debate protocol defaults are None or named states.
- v1 core: single-call base confidence is UNVERIFIED_MODEL_CONFIDENCE; halts report DEGRADED_CONFIDENCE.
- Forge: prose-free fallback states (code_generation, debugging) use named states.

Co-authored-by: arena-agent <297053741+arena-agent@users.noreply.github.com>
… seeded or invented

- meta/observability/liquidity/market-debate/ecosystem: static scores replaced by not_measured/None.
- continuous learning, long-term memory, distillation: no seeded outcomes, rules or episodes.
- provider intelligence derived from observed calls; cells below 5 calls are insufficient_calls.
- prediction aggregator: synthetic alt-data legs carry weight 0 and cannot set a direction; confidence
  withheld without calibration.
- sentiment and temporal: no-data states; counterfactual effect not a function of variable spelling.
- performance tracker computes from recorded outcomes (was logging only, naming a fictitious model).
- live capital: drawdown and loss streak required; stress, guidance and reliability are not_measured
when their inputs are absent; attribution is POST-only on supplied trades.

…on sweep

scripts/find_literal_judgements.py: AST scan of float literals bound to judgement names. Per-file
allowances carry an expected count and a reason, so new literals in an allowed file still fail.
tests/test_fabricated_state_batch.py: 27 tests, 26 fail against the pre-batch code (falsified).

Co-authored-by: arena-agent <297053741+arena-agent@users.noreply.github.com>
…tionale no longer claims unmeasured consensus

- prediction_aggregator: the LSTM leg mapped anything other than BULLISH to -1, so the NEUTRAL 24h
read (mean-reversion damping) produced a BEARISH composite. Three states now map to +1/0/-1.
Live: /v1/predict/btc with rising returns returned BEARISH (score -0.40); now NEUTRAL.
- conservative_engine: the >=0.80 rationale was a fixed sentence about 'multi-agent consensus';
it is now built from the caller's confidence, profit factor and drawdown.
- Falsified: both new tests fail against the committed code (stash check).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request changes confidence and analytics outputs to distinguish observed data from missing or synthetic values. It also adds bounded stores, provider fallback behavior, API validation and error handling, SQLite lifecycle management, runtime metrics, and operational test harnesses.

Changes

Inference evidence and analysis

Layer / File(s) Summary
Evidence-aware agent and analysis outputs
app/agents/*, app/analysis/*, app/debate/*, app/intelligence/*, app/learning/*, app/ml/*
Confidence defaults and analysis results now identify unverified, degraded, synthetic, or unmeasured values. Some analyses require supplied measurements and return missing-data statuses when inputs are absent.
Observed analytics and bounded reports
app/analytics/*, app/learning/performance.py, app/utils/bounded_store.py
Analytics reports distinguish fixtures from observed records, calculate measures from observed data, and withhold rates when samples are insufficient. Outcome, cost, usage, and strategy histories use bounded storage.
Evaluation and code-assistance services
app/evaluation/*, app/experiments/*, app/services/code_*, app/services/debugging.py, app/services/quality_assurance.py
Evaluation reports track whether model judging ran and which dimensions were scored. Code review, generation, and diagnosis validate static or model output and identify unavailable or unparsed results.

Execution and runtime controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
API contracts, cache isolation, and error handling
app/api/*, app/performance_cache.py, app/governance/tenant_manager.py, app/routers/*
Routes validate request modes and inputs, namespace cache entries, and sanitize internal error details. Ask and debate results include mode or deliberation metadata, and task outcomes can be read from durable storage.
Provider selection and execution
app/providers/*, app/routing/*, app/services/trading_consult_service.py
The gateway supports a configured local provider, checks provider credentials, and applies deadlines to primary attempts and fallbacks. Responses record the provider that served them; provider health can recover after success or a configured cooldown.
Bounded storage, persistence, and runtime telemetry
app/memory/*, app/middleware/*, app/monitoring.py, app/observability/*, app/utils/memory_guard.py, app/routers/operational.py, app/main.py
SQLite operations use a process-owned event loop and bounded connection pool. Request metrics, memory diagnostics, store audits, and Prometheus output are added or consolidated. Rate limiting now uses token buckets.

Validation and supporting tools

Layer / File(s) Summary
Operational probes and regression coverage
scripts/*, tests/*, docs/API_*, notes/WORKQUEUE.md, AGENT_PROGRESS.md
New scripts exercise provider failures, API behavior, sensitivity, and memory retention. Regression tests cover the revised analytics, routing, storage, metrics, and error handling; documentation and progress notes record endpoint metrics and investigation status.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2490d

The change makes outputs more honest, but several issues should be fixed before merge. Under load, SQLite-backed requests can hang. The local fallback can fail on real local servers because it receives cloud model names. A failed debate can store credentials that scrubbing removed from the prompt. Trading-consult provider substitution may also send unsupported model ids.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 2490d

The changes improve evidence reporting, but a new failure path retains unsanitized sensitive input, and concurrent requests can share storage transactions unexpectedly. Existing error disclosures also remain. Authentication limits access, but does not resolve these issues.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: New debate failure recording crosses the sanitization-to-retention boundary with the original topic rather than clean_topic. A credential-bearing request that reaches the exception branch can leave raw sensitive input in the recent-task cache and SQLite. Read-time masking and correctly sanitized success paths do not enforce the invariant at the storage sink.
  • High · reliability · observed: The new file-backed pool puts every usable connection back into its available queue, then returns one of those same connections without removing it from that queue. Another borrower can receive it while it is in use. Statement-level serialization and the acquisition lock do not isolate whole transactions: one request can commit another's pending writes, or failure cleanup can close their shared connection. This introduces cross-request state interference and weakens storage failure containment.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The introduced retention issue affects submitted debate topics held in the service's recent cache and task database. Connection ownership failures can interfere with concurrent operations sharing a SQLiteMemory instance. Cross-environment exposure and unrestricted database-reader reachability were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained sensitive-data finding corresponds to newly added failure recording: authenticated request input reaches raw-topic persistence after execution fails. Clean-topic recording on other branches and retrieval-time scrubbing are meaningful counterevidence, but neither prevents sensitive data from being retained.
  • observed — The retained instant-stream and ASTRA disclosures remain: fallback streaming exceptions are serialized into SSE, and ASTRA interpolates exceptions into its synthesis. Upstream streaming failures can contain decoded response bodies. These error branches and their API-key-protected router exposure already existed at the merge base; they are not attributed here as newly introduced PR concerns.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Within-namespace wildcard cache keys still omit caller and mode. Agent-assist requests with matching prompts can therefore share cached responses despite different caller labels. The relationship probe found this sharing predates the PR and is narrowed by namespace and context changes; the deferred candidate is not treated as a newly verified private-data leak.
  • observed — The limiter now consumes tokens under a lock before downstream execution and returns 429 with Retry-After on exhaustion. Client-IP resolution trusts forwarded headers only through a configured trusted hop; development bypass additionally requires a local resolved address. These controls do not establish tenant identity or database transaction ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Task cache publication precedes durable saving, and recording errors are logged without removing the cached record. Repeated task IDs update durable outcome fields without updating the original question. Recovery marks older running rows failed but does not sanitize questions. These transitions do not repair the newly retained raw topic.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Enforce sanitization at the retention boundary on every terminal path, make pool checkout exclusive until release, and validate overlapping transactions plus cancellation and failure cleanup. For the pre-existing disclosures, use generic correlated errors rather than returning upstream exception text.

CI failed: Pytest collection failed in CI because tests/test_api_authentication.py could not import tests.conftest (ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'tests'), so no tests ran; this is unrelated to the PR changes per the finding's verdict.

Overview

One unique error template matched across 2 logs (jobs 113696072526, 113697407835). The failure is a pytest collection error that stopped the run before any tests executed. Overall assessment: a test-infrastructure/import-resolution problem, not a verified product regression.

Failures

Pytest collection error: cannot import tests.conftest (confidence: medium)

  • Type: test
  • Affected jobs: 113696072526, 113697407835
  • Related to change: no
  • Root cause: from tests.conftest import TEST_API_KEY in tests/test_api_authentication.py raised ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'tests'. The log does not establish why the local tests package failed to resolve; a missing package marker or a conflicting installed tests package are possible but unconfirmed. The change context does not touch this import or test-package configuration.
  • Suggested fix: Make the import resolution explicit, e.g. add tests/__init__.py, or move shared test constants into a helper module and import them using the project's established test-import pattern. Rerun pytest collection in CI to confirm.

Summary

  • Change-related failures: None established. The finding's verdict is no.
  • Infrastructure/flaky failures: None identified as flaky. The single collection error is a deterministic import-resolution problem in the test setup.
  • Recommended action: Fix the tests package import resolution in CI (verify package layout and conftest importability), then rerun the suite. Treat as a separate test-configuration issue rather than a consequence of this PR's changes.

💡 Bug: Unscored outcomes counted as failed calls in performance stats

📄 app/learning/performance.py

compute_model_statistics sets successful_calls=len(scores) and failed_calls=len(rows) - len(scores). record_outcome now takes score: float | None, and its docstring says unmeasured values stay None. So any task recorded without a score is reported as a failed call. That is the same kind of invented measurement this PR removes elsewhere: per-agent failure counts go up for tasks that may have succeeded. The fix is to report scored and unscored outcomes as separate counts, or to record success explicitly. Count unscored outcomes separately instead of treating them as failures, and handle a 0.0 latency explicitly.

🟡 Minor · Add the judge status to the benchmark-suite results. · harness.py:79-89

app/experiments/harness.py:79-89
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add the judge status to the benchmark-suite results.

After the evaluator change, overall_score is a latency/efficiency composite whenever the judge did not run. run_baseline_vs_debate_comparison and run_model_comparison_matrix now record judge_ran and scored_dimensions. run_benchmark_suite does not. Its average_score can therefore be ~1.0 for a run where no semantic evaluation happened, and it is persisted as the Golden Benchmark result. Record the judge status per case and say what the average measures.

Record empty-completion failures against the provider that served the call.

_resolve_gate_provider makes the health gate check "local" under LOCAL_PREFERRED. However, the empty-completion branch calls record_failure(cfg.provider, ...). Under LOCAL_PREFERRED, ModelGateway.execute sends the call to the local tier, so an empty reply from the local model counts against the named cloud provider. That provider was never called. The gate then rejects a healthy cloud provider, and the local tier that misbehaved keeps its health. Use the provider that actually answered, with the resolved gate provider as a fallback.

Confirm that the local tier sets ProviderResponse.provider = "local" on its responses.

In the empty-completion branch, record the failure against the provider that
served the response, falling back to _resolve_gate_provider(cfg) when
resp.provider is absent. Use that same provider when adding the entry to
empty_completions so the health record and reported provider remain consistent.

ceiling_alert_active compares a percentage with a fraction.

budget_used_pct is a percentage (0–100), because Line 171 multiplies by 100.0. self.alert_threshold_pct is 0.80, which is a fraction. The alert therefore turns on at 0.8% of the daily budget instead of 80%. With the default $10 budget, $0.08 of measured spend raises the ceiling alert. Before this change, unmeasured traffic hid the bug because cost stayed near zero. Now that trading consult logs real token counts, the alert fires falsely on the dashboard.

Remove the raw exception text from the ASTRA error response.

The astra_reason handler returns synthesis=f"Reasoning failure: {e}", which exposes exception details to the public API. Use internal_error so the client receives only a generic message with a correlation ID, while the server log retains the scrubbed diagnostic.

Pass the response task_id to process_task.

orchestrator.process_task accepts an optional task_id, but this call omits it. The orchestrator then creates its own id and stores a second record under it. The response returns the route's task_id, and _record_task_outcome stores the final record under that id. One request now leaves two task records. Also, cancel_task(task_id) with the returned id cannot signal the in-flight cancellation event, because that event uses the internal id.

Persist clean_topic, not the raw topic, on debate failure.

Line 796 passes topic to _record_task_outcome. That value is request.topic before _scrub_and_verify runs. orchestrator.record_task writes it to SQLite through memory.save_task. Every other _record_task_outcome call uses the scrubbed text: the success path at Line 735, the insufficient-data path at Line 661, and the /v1/ask paths. A credential that scrubbing removed from the prompt is therefore stored at rest when the debate fails. GET /tasks/{id} scrubs the record on read, but the database row keeps the secret. clean_topic is already defined before the try.

Stop the 0.80 no-evidence default from becoming a published confidence.

confidence = credibility_factor now publishes the value from _detect_syndication_and_credibility. With an empty evidence pool, that method returns the fixed literal 0.80 (Line 128). The verifier role then finds no low-credibility items and sets confidence = min(0.98, 0.80 * 1.05) = 0.84, with verification_status: "CONSENSUS_VERIFIED" over zero claims. This is a fixed judgement with no measurement behind it. Unrated evidence is already treated as 0.0 by _credibility. Return 0.0 (or None) for no evidence, and do not report a verified consensus when there are no claims to check.

🐛 Proposed fix
         if not evidence:
- return 0.80, [], []
+ # No evidence: nothing to be credible about (was a fixed 0.80).
+ return 0.0, [], []

In the verifier branch, also set verification_status to "NO_EVIDENCE" when evidence_pool is empty.

Update _detect_syndication_and_credibility to return zero confidence when the
evidence pool is empty, and update the verifier branch to set
verification_status to NO_EVIDENCE and avoid raising confidence when
evidence_pool has no claims to check.

Clear the preferred model when routing to a substitute provider.

When the circuit is open, provider_name changes to chosen, but ProviderRequest still carries agent.model_name. ModelGateway.execute forwards that request unchanged, and the provider payload uses request.model directly. A substitute provider can therefore receive an unsupported model identifier and fail.

Avoid recursive locking in BoundedStore.setdefault.

_lock is a non-reentrant threading.Lock. setdefault holds it, then calls __setitem__ for a missing key or __getitem__ for an existing key. Both methods acquire the same lock, so any call can block its thread indefinitely.

Update BoundedStore.setdefault to avoid calling __setitem__ or __getitem__ while
holding the non-reentrant _lock. Access and update _data directly under the

The /ask payload uses a field the route does not accept.

Every other harness posts /ask with {"question": ..., "mode": ...} (for example scripts/memory_forensics.py Line 110 and scripts/real_life_drive.py Line 357). This builder sends {"query": ...}. On /ask that body most likely fails validation with 422 before the handler runs. endswith("/ask") also matches /v1/ask. Its resolve_prompt_and_envelope validator ignores a top-level query, so every request gets the same default prompt, "General reasoning inquiry". Either way, the probe drives no per-request work and can report a false "plateau". The docstring at Lines 141-146 warns against exactly this failure.

Update the `/ask` payload builder identified by `path.endswith("/ask")` to send
the accepted `question` and `mode` fields instead of `query`, using a
per-request prompt so each probe exercises distinct work.

This script sends POST to the GET-only diagnostics endpoint, so tracing stays on.

scripts/memory_forensics.py (Lines 149-151) states that /memory/diagnostics is GET and that a POST returns 405, which leaves tracemalloc running. This script sends method="POST", prints the 405, then prints tracing off. The script measures RSS composition, and tracemalloc inflates those numbers, so every reading carries that distortion.

Update the diagnostics stop call in the script to use the endpoint’s GET method
instead of POST, so the stop request succeeds and tracemalloc is turned off
