Fixes #6010

Checklist

  • Self-review the PR after opening it to make sure the changes look good and
    self-explanatory (or properly documented)
  • Add relevant issue to release milestone
  • Add pr to documentation list
  • Add automated tests
  • Add a reverse migration if a migration is present in the PR
  • Add migration function to
    def fix_schema_config(stdout: WriteToStdOut | None = None):

Notes:

  • Accept HTTP and HTTPS URLs only.
  • External URL attachments work independently of whether the Specify asset server is configured or available.
  • In queries and exports, use resourceURL when present; otherwise derive the URL for a locally stored asset from the asset-server configuration.
  • In the attachment viewer, show the external link and attachment metadata, and open the resource separately. Defer inline remote previews.
  • This will not include barcode-based lookup from an external image system; that can be scoped separately.

Testing instructions

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Attachments can link to external HTTP(S) resources, even when an attachment server is unavailable. Invalid or overlong URLs are rejected with a clear message.
    • External resources appear as links to the referenced content. File uploads remain available when the attachment server is configured.
    • WorkBench validates attachment resource URLs during upload.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Upload errors now appear inline without replacing the uploader.

📝 Walkthrough

The Attachment model adds a nullable resourceURL field. The frontend can create, validate, normalize, and display external HTTP(S) attachments. WorkBench validates mapped attachment URLs. File uploads remain available when the attachment server is available.

Changes: External Resource Attachments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add the Attachment resource URL field
specifyweb/specify/models.py, specifyweb/specify/datamodel.py, specifyweb/specify/migrations/0049_add_attachment_resource_url.py, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/DataModel/types.ts, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/tests/ajax/static/context/datamodel.json, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/__tests__/utils.ts
The Attachment model and schema add a nullable resourceURL field mapped to ResourceURL, with a maximum length of 1024 characters. The migration, frontend type, datamodel fixture, and test fixture include the field.
Add external resource URLs
specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/Plugin.tsx, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/attachments.ts, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/__tests__/*, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/localization/attachments.ts, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/README.md
The upload interface accepts HTTP(S) URLs and rejects invalid or overlong URLs with inline errors. It creates an attachment with the normalized URL, hostname title, and collection public-default setting. External-resource entry remains available when the attachment server is unavailable.
Display external resources
specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/Viewer.tsx, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/Attachments/attachments.ts
The viewer displays a link for a valid external URL and skips server-backed original and thumbnail fetching. Thumbnail generation returns an HTML icon for external URLs.
Validate WorkBench resource URLs
specifyweb/backend/workbench/upload/parse.py, specifyweb/backend/workbench/upload/parsing.py, specifyweb/backend/workbench/upload/tests/test_attachment_resource_url.py, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/WorkBench/resultMessageResolvers.ts, specifyweb/frontend/js_src/lib/components/WorkBench/__tests__/resultsParser.test.ts
WorkBench parsing validates attachment URLs from raw, formatted, and picklist-produced values. Invalid URLs produce failedParsingURL, which the frontend resolves to a localized validation message.

CI Workflow Cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove the Weblate addon access check

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #6010 requires URL entry with metadata, WorkBench URL import, URL queries and exports, dwc:associatedMedia aggregation, individual ac:accessURI results with metadata, and URL construction for local assets. The PR adds Attachment.resourceURL, HTTP(S) validation, form entry, viewer handling, WorkBench validation, and tests for these changes. The reviewed changes do not establish query or export handling, the required aggregation, individual ac:accessURI results with metadata, or local asset-server URL construction.

Resolution

Implement and test query and export support for external URLs and local assets. Add and test dwc:associatedMedia aggregation. Add and test individual ac:accessURI output with attachment metadata. Construct and test local asset URLs from the asset-server configuration.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The attachment schema, form, viewer, WorkBench validation, localization, documentation, and tests support issue #6010. The workflow change removes the Weblate add-on access check from .github/workflows/test.yml. That CI change has no demonstrated connection to external attachment URLs and is outside the stated PR scope.

Full details: Automatic Tests

Explanation

The PR includes automatic tests for URL parsing, normalization, frontend URL creation, and WorkBench message resolution. It does not include an automatic test for the changed database persistence path. The only new backend test is AttachmentResourceURLTests(SimpleTestCase), which tests parsing and never creates or reloads an Attachment. The changed migration 0049_add_attachment_resource_url.py and Attachment.resourceurl model field have no migration or persistence test coverage. Repository searches found no other test that references resourceurl or ResourceURL for database readback.

Resolution

Add backend automatic tests that migrate an existing database through 0049_add_attachment_resource_url, verify nullable and 1024-character values, create and update Attachment.resourceurl, and read the value back through the supported model or API path.

Full details: Testing Instructions

Explanation

The PR description has no usable testing instructions. Its Testing instructions section contains only template comments. The PR changes migration 0049, the nullable Attachment.resourceurl field and 1024-character limit, frontend external URL creation and viewer behavior, URL normalization, and WorkBench URL validation. The description gives no commands, verification steps, or expected results for these components.

Resolution

Replace the template comments with reproducible steps. Explain how to apply migration 0049 and verify nullable Attachment.ResourceURL with its 1024-character limit. Document checks for creating and viewing attachments with and without resourceurl, external URL creation without an asset server, HTTP/HTTPS validation, whitespace normalization, overlength rejection, and WorkBench validation. Include targeted backend and frontend test commands and expected results.

🟠 Major · Derive local URLs when projecting resourceURL. · queryfieldspec.py:582-627

specifyweb/backend/stored_queries/queryfieldspec.py:582-627
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Derive local URLs when projecting resourceURL.

When an Attachment query requests resourceURL, QueryFieldSpec.add_spec_to_query selects the nullable resourceurl column directly. Local attachments use attachmentlocation, so rows with no resourceURL reach both generic query results and query_to_csv as null. DefaultQueryProcessors only handles catalog-number inheritance and does not add this fallback.

Add a resourceURL projection that keeps a non-null resourceurl and otherwise derives the local URL from asset-server configuration and attachmentlocation. Both generic queries and CSV exports use this shared projection.

Use resourceURL for external attachments in the portal exporter.

When an external attachment has resourceURL but no attachmentlocation, _portal_attachment_entry() skips it before creating the export entry. The exporter must select resourceURL for external attachments and retain the existing local-asset URL behavior for attachments without resourceURL.

Cover the unavailable-server path through AttachmentsPlugin.

The changed tests render UploadAttachment directly. They do not exercise attachmentSettingsPromise, AttachmentsPlugin, or the callback that stores the attachment on the form resource. The base implementation returned the unavailable-server message when the setting was false; reverting that branch would hide the external URL input while these tests still passed. Add an integration test that resolves the setting to false, renders AttachmentsPlugin with a resource, enters an external URL, and asserts that the resource receives the attachment and its resourceURL.
