Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Queries using taxonomic relationship fields now keep results associated with the correct relationship when selecting multiple ranks or ordering fields differently.
  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for queries involving multiple taxonomic relationships, including shared and distinct ranks across relationships.

📝 Walkthrough

The tree-rank join cache now distinguishes entries by node. Regression tests check rank fields across Taxon, Preferred Taxon, and Host Taxon relationships, including different field orders.

Changes: Taxon relationship queries

The tree-rank cache key now includes the current node, in addition to the table and TreeRanks label.

The tests create separate taxon hierarchies and check any-rank and explicit-rank results across Taxon, Preferred Taxon, and Host Taxon relationships. They also check explicit-rank fields in both field orders.

Full details: Testing Instructions

Explanation

The PR still has no usable testing instructions. The Testing instructions section contains only template comments and no test command, expected result, manual verification steps, or test results. The changed code affects QueryBuilder tree-rank joins across Determination → Taxon, Determination → Preferred Taxon, and CollectingEventAttribute → Host Taxon. The added tests cover explicit ranks, any-rank fields, and relationship-order permutations, but the PR does not explain how to run or verify them.

Resolution

Replace the template comments with clear steps. State the supported command python -m pytest specifyweb/backend/stored_queries/tests/test_build_query.py and the expected passing result. Add manual QueryBuilder steps for explicit-rank fields across Determination → Taxon, Determination → Preferred Taxon, and CollectingEventAttribute → Host Taxon, including both relationship orders and any-rank fields. Report the test results.

On the sp7demofish database I had locally, before the fix, the preferred species column incorrectly repeated productus. With the PR fix, it returned oculatus, matching the preferred taxon.

PR 8670 - Taxon and Preferred Taxon Ranks.json

Run Catalog number shown by query Determination genus Determination species Preferred genus Preferred species
main 2611 Lepisosteus productus Lepisosteus productus
issue-8560 2611 Lepisosteus productus Lepisosteus oculatus

With the same query (catalog number, genus, and species for both the determination taxon and preferred taxon), the generated SQL changed from 13 JOIN clauses before the fix to 23 with the PR fix. This added 10 additional joins 👀 (same risk as #8529 again).

cache_key = (table, 'TreeRanks')

The new key requires a second taxon ancestor path for preferredTaxon, so the query SQL grew from 13 to 23 joins. The additional joins are the path needed to retrieve preferred-taxon ranks independently; the old query had fewer joins because it reused the wrong path.

Old query:
