📝 Walkthrough

The E2E tests now run the application from a Docker image and use a mock proxy for URL metadata requests. The changes add Docker Compose and Nx test orchestration, update BullMQ and database runtime setup, and remove the former in-process E2E project.

Changes: Docker-backed E2E tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Application and database runtime
packages/common/src/env.ts, packages/bullmq/*, apps/worker/src/createWorker.ts, Dockerfile, packages/db/*, docker-compose.yml, .dockerignore, README.md
BullMQ queues and workers use the configured prefix. The app image excludes E2E files. The migration script closes its exported database pool, and the database migration removes the existing primary-key constraint before setting the new key. Compose adds a shared network and updated healthchecks.
Mock proxy service
e2e/mocks/*, Dockerfile, docker-compose.yml
The mock package generates a certificate, serves the URL metadata fixture, and forwards HTTP requests and HTTPS CONNECT tunnels. Compose builds and starts the proxy service.
Docker test orchestration
docker-compose.e2e.yml, e2e/tests/*
The E2E project starts the app container and provides a typed client to tests. The health test uses that client, and a URL metadata test submits a task and polls for the fixture title. The helper disposes of the app and reports non-zero child-process exits.
E2E workspace and CI integration
.github/workflows/test.yml, project.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, package.json, knip.json, tsconfig.json, .gitignore, .prettierignore, apps/e2e/*
The E2E packages join the pnpm workspace and aggregated Nx targets. CI runs the E2E target. Root tooling and ignore rules are updated, and the former apps/e2e project configuration is removed.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5d268

The Docker-backed E2E setup has earlier review concerns that cannot be confirmed fixed from the supplied context. These concern test teardown robustness, a published host port, and flaky timing. They affect test infrastructure only, not production. Confirm the teardown and port handling before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5d268

The new test launcher exposes the application beyond localhost and can leave it running after startup or teardown failures. The demonstrated risk is concentrated on developer and test hosts; the default application image excludes the mock proxy and its certificate material.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Normal E2E execution now publishes the application port without a loopback restriction, replacing the previous 127.0.0.1-only listener. When development mode is selected, a host-network peer can reach the unauthenticated sync-all route and submit work to the newly launched worker. Local .env values are inherited by that runtime. Effective remote reachability depends on host firewall policy; production compromise or credential disclosure is not established.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The launcher creates a database and starts the application before returning its disposer. Failed startup therefore cannot reach cleanup, and teardown errors can prevent subsequent container or database removal. Interruption has no cleanup path in the inspected launcher. Unlike the previous in-process listener, these resources can outlive the test process, prolonging the new application exposure and retaining its configured environment.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure concerns the E2E API, its workers, and developer/test-host resources. Database and queue identities are per-run, but network and object-storage infrastructure are shared. Host-network reachability and any real credentials supplied through local .env determine additional exposure; no production compromise or host privilege escalation is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — When the published E2E port is reachable and development mode is enabled, a network peer can POST to /development/sync-all without an authorization credential. The handler submits a sync job, and the full worker runtime consumes that task. The route predates this PR; its exposure through ordinary E2E execution is the introduced change. Rate limiting constrains volume but does not authorize the operation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Matching prefixes preserve queue producer/consumer identity, not Redis access authorization. Certificate trust is explicitly added to the E2E application, and the proxy's CONNECT destination is fixed to its local mock server. The default application image excludes the E2E directory containing generated certificate material.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — UUID ownership reduces accidental database and queue collisions across concurrent runs, but does not guarantee lifecycle completion. The disposer is registered only after successful startup; acquisition failure, interruption, or teardown failure can leave resources behind. Normal disposal also does not remove the run's prefixed Redis state.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve the previous E2E loopback boundary by binding the published API port to 127.0.0.1. Supply an explicit test-only environment rather than inheriting unrestricted local .env values.
  • proposed — Track resource ownership as acquisition proceeds and attempt independent, idempotent cleanup on startup failure, normal disposal, and interruption. Remove only the run-owned Compose project, database, and Redis namespace; avoid flushing shared services.

Explanation

Issue #248 requires the e2e-tests workflow to start docker-compose.yml with --profiles app, run API and worker containers, and run the existing /health tests from Node outside Docker. The workflow now only runs pnpm run test:e2e. docker-compose.yml removes the app service and its app profile. The E2E helper still starts Compose itself through e2e/tests/test-utils/spawnApp.ts, so the workflow does not provide the required separate container and test entrypoints.

Resolution

Restore an API and worker app service in docker-compose.yml with the required app profile. Start it in the e2e-tests workflow with the app profile before the tests. Configure the existing /health tests to target that running container without starting the application from the test helper.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Issue #248 is limited to the existing /health E2E environment. The pull request adds the separate URL-metadata E2E test and its e2e/mocks/src/url-metadata.ts mock. It also changes the unrelated packages/db/drizzle/20260917034659_misty_stick/migration.sql primary-key constraint and adds BullMQ prefix changes in the worker and queue packages. These changes do not implement the /health E2E environment requirement.

This seems hazardous to do, no? Isn't the loop looking the wrong way, as well?

Like we want to make sure that the loop happens with a 200 but it's while(true) if so...?

We should repeat at most 5 times or something instead. WDYT?

Haven't read all the way through, but if we are moving more towards docker, I prefer using the docker health check itself

This doesn't run in docker, nx has a dependsOn that starts the dev server in apps/api when it runs typegen.

(I'm not intending this to be the long term solution, but it only runs if you invoke it manually, too - nothing is type checking apps/e2e in test/ci at the moment)

Maybe a matter of style, but I prefer “using” so that cleanup happens even if there’s an error along the way

Read through this and ran pnpm test:unit on the branch. It passes and the branch merges cleanly into current main. I have not run the e2e tests themselves, I'm on Windows and have a question about that below. The design makes sense to me, and the typegen polling loop Corbin flagged is gone in the current code. Two things I think should change before merge, then questions.

Requested:

  • packages/bullmq/src/flow-producer.ts still does new FlowProducer({ connection: redis }) with no prefix. Queue and Worker got BULLMQ_PREFIX but FlowProducer didn't, so with a prefix set anything enqueued through flowProducer lands under bull: and the prefixed workers never see it. The two tests here don't go through it, but the push and pull_request webhook jobs and sync-all do, so the #207 test would never see its sync jobs run. Looks like a one-line fix.
  • Nothing documents how to run the new e2e tests now that the "Testing in Docker" README section is gone. Could you add a short section? It would also be a good place to mention the compose project rename: anyone with existing playful-programming-cms containers will hit port conflicts on up and needs to run docker compose -p playful-programming-cms down first, and their data stays behind in the old volumes.

Possible issue:

  • In spawnApp.ts it looks like a failed docker compose up app --wait throws after CREATE DATABASE but before the disposer is returned, which would leave the database and the half-started compose project behind. I may be misreading how the await using cleanup covers that.

Questions:

  • The misty_stick migration edit makes sense for fresh databases, and since drizzle matches applied migrations by name, production won't notice it. But how did production apply the original? From the migration chain it looks like it should have failed with multiple primary keys on collections.
  • A request with no mock registered falls through to mockhttp's built-in routes or a plain 404. The url-metadata test already depends on that for example.com/robots.txt. Is that intended? A missing mock would be easier to spot if the proxy failed loudly.
  • The generated cert only covers example.com. Is the plan to add each mocked host to the cert as tests need them, e.g. api.github.com for #207?
  • spawnApp's exec() replaces the whole environment and cleanup uses process.kill(-pid). Are the e2e tests expected to run natively on Windows, or is Linux/WSL the assumed setup?
  • The root tsconfig additions overlap with #263. Which one is meant to land first?

Nits:

  • sourceRoot in the e2e/*/project.json files still says apps/e2e/src.
  • e2e/mocks/package.json pins typebox instead of using catalog:.
  • .husky is listed twice in .dockerignore.

Nothing documents how to run the new e2e tests

IMO documentation improvements should be its own task, and not specifically something that lives in the README. The e2e tests run by default in pnpm test and CI, so developers should not need to know about E2E tests in particular. (at least not in the initial setup)

how did production apply the original?

This was patched manually. The motivation for #249 is to create tests that ensure migrations can be applied without errors.

A request with no mock registered falls through to mockhttp's built-in routes or a plain 404.
The generated cert only covers example.com.

Yes, for now that's intended. This can be expanded as more tests are built, this PR is only creating the initial framework.

The root tsconfig additions overlap with #263.

This is a stacked PR - #263 is stacked on top of #262. They will likely be merged together.
