📚 Description

Problem

Remote databases are filled lazily, inside the first visitor requests after a deployment. On D1 we found, and reproduced on workerd:

  1. A cancelled import is never recovered (Cloudflare D1: Integrity check occasionally damages database without self-recovery #3854). _content_info stays at ready = 0; every later request waits 90s, logs Database integrity check failed, then queries the half-filled table (we got a 200 with 6 of 1500 documents).
  2. A cancelled request hangs its isolate (stopping the request during the first page view is breaking initialization #3159). The integrity promise shared by the isolate never settles.
  3. Upgrades that remove or change more than 100 documents fail (D1: content upgrades fail when more than 100 documents are removed or changed (too many SQL variables) #3880). D1 rejects the deletion of outdated records (too many SQL variables) and the site keeps serving the previous content.

Also fixed along the way:

  • concurrent isolates importing the same collection together (interleaved DROP TABLE / INSERTs);
  • statement errors being ignored, so ready can be set with rows missing;
  • libsql and PostgreSQL never creating the collection table, because the table line of the dump holds several statements;
  • a databaseVersion change dropping every collection's info row.

Fix (src/runtime/internal/database.server.ts only, no configuration or schema change)

  • Import lease: a lease_<collection> row in _content_info. Claiming it is a primary-key insert, so only one request imports a collection at a time, on every SQL engine. It expires after 30s, is renewed while the import progresses, and its ownership is confirmed before every destructive statement and before the collection is flagged as ready.
  • Strict import: each statement is retried, then the import fails; the collection is flagged as ready only when the table holds exactly the records of the dump.
  • D1 limits: outdated records are deleted in batches of 100 bound parameters.
  • Portable replay: structure lines are split into single statements (quote-aware).
  • No partial reads: requests wait for the import or get a 503; a failed check is retried after 10s.
  • No stranded promise: the shared check records progress on every database call, callers start a new one after 30s without progress, and the check is handed to waitUntil / event.context.waitUntil (the fallback comes from fix(database): don't hang on an integrity check stranded by a cancelled request #3872, thanks!).
  • Database version changes rebuild the collection under its lease; the info table is only recreated when its columns do not match the build.

Reproduction & tests

  • test/unit/database.server.integrity.test.ts: 21 scenarios on real db0 connectors for SQLite/D1, libsql and PostgreSQL (PGlite). Hangs, pauses and errors are injected around the connectors, isolates are fresh module instances.
  • test/cloudflare-d1.test.ts: builds two releases of a cloudflare-module fixture and runs them on workerd with a local D1 through wrangler dev. No Cloudflare account needed.
Scenario (workerd) main #3872 this PR
workerd killed mid-import, then a fresh isolate ✗ 90s, then partial data ✗ 503, ready = 0 not recovered ✓
request returns while its import runs, then same isolate ✗ hangs ✓ ✓
upgrade removing 200 / changing 1000 / adding 100 documents ✗ previous release served – ✓
same upgrade, workerd killed half-way ✗ – ✓

eslint ., pnpm typecheck and the full vitest run pass (479 tests). The workerd suite takes about 2.5 minutes.

Known limitations

  • While a new release upgrades a collection in place, isolates still running the previous release can read a mix of both releases, as today. An atomic table swap would close this; I'd suggest it as a follow-up since it changes the dump format.
  • A statement already in flight when its owner loses the lease cannot be stopped from the client; its effects are caught by the record check and the import is redone.
  • The only new user-visible behaviour is a 503 while a collection is being imported, instead of partial content.

📝 Checklist

  • I have linked an issue or discussion.
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly. (No configuration change.)

A request cancelled while it runs the lazy collection import could leave
the module unable to recover:

- the `_content_info` row stayed at the current version with `ready = 0`;
later requests polled for 90s, threw "Database integrity check failed"
and queried a half-filled table. A waiter that reaches the timeout, or
finds the row gone, now takes the import over instead of giving up.
- the integrity promise memoised per isolate never settled when its owner
was cancelled, so every later request awaited it forever. The check now
reports progress on each database call and callers that see none for 30s
discard it and start a new check.
- a `ready = 0` row no longer vouches for the table structure, so a
takeover or a newer version rebuilds the table instead of inserting
into a table that may be missing.

Builds on the previous commit to close the remaining holes of the lazy
import of remote databases (D1, libsql, postgres):

- Importing a collection now requires a lease, stored as a
`lease_<collection>` row of `_content_info` (no schema change). Claiming
it is a primary key insert, so a single request in a single isolate
imports a collection at a time; concurrent isolates no longer interleave
  DROP/INSERT statements.
- The owner renews the lease while it imports. A lease left by a killed
request expires after 30s and is taken over, instead of the former 90s
blind wait on a `ready = 0` row. An owner that lost its lease stops
before it can flag the collection as ready.
- A stalled check releases its lease right away.
- The check is handed to `event.waitUntil` (or `event.context.waitUntil`)
so a client disconnect does not cancel it on Cloudflare.

The unit tests now run every scenario on real db0 connectors for SQLite
(D1 dialect), libsql and PostgreSQL (pglite).

Builds a `cloudflare-module` fixture and runs it with `wrangler dev`
(workerd + local D1), to reproduce the production failures:

- workerd killed half-way through an import, then a fresh isolate
- a request that returns while its import is in flight, then a request
  in the same isolate
- concurrent first requests

On `main` the first scenario waits 90s and serves 6 of 1500 documents,
and the second one hangs.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01L11XpXPwsb9JzVNdHHMdkT
Hardens the lazy import of remote databases for content upgrades:

- Batch the deletion of outdated records by 100 bound parameters. D1
rejects larger statements ("too many SQL variables"), so on main any
release removing or changing more than 100 documents failed its
upgrade and kept serving the previous content.
- Split structure lines (DROP, CREATE, indexes) into single statements:
libsql and PostgreSQL run one statement at a time, so their lazy import
  never created the collection table.
- Retry failing statements, then fail the import instead of ignoring the
error, and check that the table holds exactly the records of the dump
before flagging the collection as ready.
- Confirm the lease before every destructive statement, and count its
renewal from its acquisition: a request paused after taking the lease
can no longer drop the table of the import that replaced it. A stalled
check no longer releases a lease its owner may still be using.
- A new database version rebuilds the collection under its lease instead
of dropping the whole info table (and every lease in it); the info table
is only recreated when its columns do not match the dump.
- Requests are never served from a collection that is not ready: they
wait for the import, or get a 503. A failed check is retried after 10s.

Adds two releases of the fixture to the workerd suite: an upgrade that
removes 200, changes 1000 and adds 100 documents, run normally and killed
half-way. On main, the first one keeps serving the previous release
(`D1_ERROR: too many SQL variables`) and the second one never starts.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Integrity checks now track progress and replace stalled checks. Imports use token-owned leases, retry failed SQL, delete stale rows in batches, and verify imported records before marking a collection ready. The changes also add unit tests across SQL connectors and end-to-end tests for Cloudflare D1 imports, interruptions, and upgrades.

- Do not use `Set.prototype.difference`: it is not available on Node.js
20 (supported by `engines`), where every import would have failed its
record check. The unit tests now run without the ES2025 Set methods.
- Never import an empty dump: it would delete every record of the
  collection.
- Flag the collection as ready in the same statement that checks the
lease, so an owner paused right before that write cannot flag the
  import that replaced it.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Fence every import statement, not only the ready update.

importCollection renews the lease and then executes each dump statement in a separate database call. If an owner pauses before execStatement completes, another owner can rebuild and mark the collection ready. The stale owner can then execute an unguarded structure statement such as DROP TABLE, removing the ready collection. The same gap affects dump writes.

Make every destructive or dump SQL operation atomic with its lease check, using a database transaction or an owner-specific staging table with an atomic publish step. A second renew() immediately before execStatement is not sufficient because the lease can expire after that check.

Assert import progress after /api/kick returns.

worker.get('/api/kick') resolves after the response returns. The handler starts queryCollection(event, 'docs').count() without awaiting it. The database path relies on event.waitUntil(check.promise) to keep the import alive after the client disconnects.

The current test checks only eventual completion. If the import stops at request end, partial rows can remain and worker.docs() can retry until recovery succeeds. A partial-row check alone would also pass because it checks persisted state, not continued progress.

Record the row count after the response and require it to increase before calling worker.docs().

The import of a request that returns early must keep running (handed to

it as soon as the response is sent, and this assertion fails.

Checking that rows were still missing right after `/api/kick` returned
depended on timing. With no other request, the import of a request that
returned completes only if it was handed to `waitUntil`, so waiting for
the collection to be flagged as ready is deterministic.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Renew the lease before retrying import SQL.

importCollection checks the lease before calling execStatement, but execStatement retries db.exec without checking ownership. If a D1 statement fails after the lease expires, the old owner can retry its raw INSERT, DELETE, or structure SQL after a replacement import completes. verifyRecords runs too late to undo that write, and flagReady protects only the readiness update. The stale write can therefore mutate a collection that remains marked ready.

A statement that hangs past the lease lifetime and then fails was retried
without checking the lease, so its retry could run after another request
had taken the import over and completed it (e.g. dropping its table).
