Summary

  • Fresh installs start with AI off (aiEnabled false). An existing preferences.json keeps an explicit true or false.
  • Settings presets, in order: LM Studio, Napa AI Gateway (https://gateway-api.napa-ai.com/v1, default model grok-3, API key left empty until the user sets one), xAI/SpaceXSI, Custom. Napa requires an API key the same way xAI does.
  • Version is 26.10.1. README covers Windows (portable and setup executables) and the Ubuntu 26.04+ .deb, and lists those presets.
  • Ubuntu packaging is included on this branch so 26.10.1 can ship both operating systems. npm run build still writes the Windows executables. npm run build:deb writes release/Basil-<version>-amd64.deb.
  • The marketing site is not in this repository, so basiltexteditor.com is unchanged here.

GitHub Release

This pull request does not create a tag and does not upload release assets.

After it merges, publish a GitHub Release with tag v26.10.1 (published, not a draft). .github/workflows/release.yml then builds and uploads:

  • Basil-26.10.1-portable.exe
  • Basil-26.10.1-setup.exe
  • Basil-26.10.1-amd64.deb

linux-deb.yml builds the .deb on this pull request as a workflow artifact only. It does not attach that file to a GitHub Release.

Test plan

  • npm test (157 tests)
  • npm run typecheck
  • npm run lint
  • After merge, publish the v26.10.1 GitHub Release so the Windows and Linux assets are uploaded

New preferences get aiEnabled false, so the Settings checkbox starts
unchecked. An existing preferences.json keeps an explicit true or false.
electron-builder produces Basil-<version>-amd64.deb for x64, with a
desktop entry, MIME types, and hicolor icons. Windows portable and NSIS
builds stay on the existing scripts. Linux skips attrib and the registry
theme probe, uses a PNG tray icon, and writes an XDG autostart file for
start-with-boot.
Electron 43's highest glibc symbol is 2.25, and the binary links libudev
directly. Ubuntu 26.04's glibc 2.43 still satisfies that dependency.
Add Napa AI Gateway between LM Studio and xAI/SpaceXSI, and rename the
xAI preset label. Document Windows plus the Ubuntu 26.04+ .deb, version
26.10.1, and that AI stays off until the user turns it on.
