Summary

  • add a privileged real-network-namespace harness around the production binary and AgentX Unix socket
  • cover real topology rows, refreshes, reconnects, protocol behavior, configuration, and OID limits with discovered interface indices
  • retain fixture ip executables only for subprocess lifecycle coverage and require the real suite in CI

Validation

  • cargo test --locked: 38 passed, 6 privileged tests ignored by the default invocation
  • cargo clippy --locked --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo deny check
  • packaging policy: 46 passed
  • zizmor: no findings in offline mode

The local sandbox denies unshare(CLONE_NEWNET). The required CI step runs the privileged suite with iproute2 and root access.

Closes #7
Closes #8

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Network topology is now monitored through netlink, with event-driven updates and periodic reconciliation.
    • Interface data remains available during ordinary monitoring failures and refreshes after connectivity loss.
  • Configuration

    • Replaced the refresh setting with reconcile; the default interval is now 3600 seconds. Existing configurations must be updated.
  • Dependencies

    • Removed the runtime requirement for the iproute2/ip command.
  • Tests

    • Added comprehensive real-network-namespace integration coverage and hardened CI execution.

Walkthrough

The change replaces ip-based topology reads with a netlink monitor and shared published tables. It renames refresh to reconcile, adds real namespace AgentX coverage, removes obsolete fixtures and subprocess tests, and makes the privileged integration suite required in restricted CI.

Changes

Netlink Monitor Replacement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Topology and MIB contracts
src/config.rs, src/link.rs, src/mib.rs
Adds typed link observations and direct topology relationships. MIB construction adds boundary rows. The configuration field changes from refresh to reconcile with a 3600-second default and no compatibility alias.
Monitor publication and scheduling
src/monitor.rs
Adds shared table publication, event-driven acquisition, reconciliation, exponential backoff, continuity-loss handling, and deterministic monitor tests.
Netlink acquisition adapter
src/netlink.rs
Adds route-netlink subscription, bounded link dumps, message decoding, failure classification, socket I/O, and adapter tests.
Runtime integration and session reads
src/main.rs, src/session.rs, Cargo.toml, packaging/*
Starts the monitor beside the AgentX process, serves snapshots through TableReader, removes the ip subprocess cache, and removes runtime iproute dependencies and the service PATH override.
Configuration, packaging, and operator documentation
README.md, CLAUDE.md, docs/adr/*, packaging/agentx-ifstack.8, packaging/agentx-ifstack.toml
Documents netlink acquisition, publication and failure behavior, the reconcile setting, upgrade handling, and the new package requirements.

Real Namespace Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared AgentX test support
tests/support/agentx.rs, tests/support/mod.rs
Adds shared AgentX socket, handshake, frame, exchange, OID, and range helpers.
Real namespace topology and protocol coverage
tests/real_namespace.rs
Adds production-binary tests against isolated interfaces. The tests cover topology rows, AgentX operations, byte order, topology changes, reconnects, configuration, privilege dropping, resource bounds, and OID limits.
Session harness migration
tests/session.rs
Uses shared AgentX support and managed temporary directories. Removes duplicated protocol setup and obsolete subprocess-topology tests.
Required CI execution and policy validation
.github/workflows/checks.yml, .github/real-namespace.Dockerfile, packaging/test_policy.py
Builds the exact integration-test artifact and runs it with restricted container settings. Policy tests reject disabled, decoy, or incorrectly configured workflow commands.
Supporting cleanup
.opengrep/*, tests/fixtures/*, tests/config_cli.rs
Removes obsolete subprocess rules and JSON topology fixtures. Updates invalid-configuration coverage for reconcile.

In @.github/workflows/checks.yml:
- Line 27: Update the privileged real_namespace test command to invoke Cargo via
its resolved absolute path rather than relying on sudo’s PATH; keep the existing
locked and ignored test arguments unchanged, and update the corresponding README
command example to match.

In `@packaging/test_policy.py`:
- Line 657: Update the matcher used by the policy check and mutation selection
to recognize an executable Cargo test command rather than arbitrary substring
text: change packaging/test_policy.py lines 657 and 1125 to share the same
command-aware matcher, and add a regression covering a decoy echo step so only
the actual test step is selected.

In `@tests/real_namespace.rs`:
- Around line 188-190: Update the real namespace setup so ipvlan0 uses a second
dummy lower interface instead of the lower0 interface already assigned to
macvlan0. Discover that interface’s index and update the expected
relationship/assertion to reference it.
