Previously, when appendRecords or multiStreamAppend reached a follower node, the client didn't recognize the server's not-leader response and surfaced it as a plain StatusRuntimeException with FAILED_PRECONDITION. The client stayed connected to the follower, so every later append failed until the application restarted. This can happen whenever leadership moves, for example during a rolling upgrade where the leader restarts as a follower

These operations now throw NotLeaderException with the leader's endpoint, and the client reconnects to the leader, the same way appendToStream already does. As with appendToStream, the append that reached the follower still fails and should be retried

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved handling of server errors that identify another node as the leader. The client now recognizes leader addresses provided in structured error details or connection metadata and includes valid leader information in the not-leader error.
    • When leader information is invalid or inconsistent with the server error, the client preserves the original error rather than reporting misleading redirect details.

Walkthrough

The gRPC not-leader handler now checks trailer metadata and protobuf status details for leader information. It completes the destination with a NotLeaderException when it finds a valid leader endpoint. Tests cover structured details and invalid endpoint or status inputs.

Changes: Leader Redirect Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Decode not-leader details
src/main/java/io/kurrent/dbclient/GrpcUtils.java, src/test/java/io/kurrent/dbclient/LeaderRedirectUnitTest.java
The handler processes StatusRuntimeException inputs and checks leader host and port trailers before protobuf status details. It completes the destination exceptionally with a NotLeaderException when it finds a leader endpoint. Tests check the structured-detail endpoint and verify that invalid inputs retain the original exception.

97-114: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift

Add public-path redirect tests for both append operations.

The structured-detail test calls the helper directly, so it cannot catch a broken append observer or reconnection path. For each operation, return these details from a follower, assert the first call fails with the leader endpoint, and assert a subsequent call reaches the leader.
