fix(lib): read a mounted script's spec despite a rejected env value, and name the failing mount - #1591
A mount run= that fetches the spec of another usage-shebang script no longer fails when the environment holds a value one of that script's flags rejects, and a mount that does fail now says which command it was resolving.
#!/usr/bin/env -S usage bash#USAGE flag "--mount" hide=#true#USAGE flag "--mode <m>" env="X_MODE" { choices "a" "b" }if [[ "${usage_mount:-}"==true ]];thenecho'flag "--mode <m>"';exit 0;fi
and a parent that mounts it with mount run="./child --mount", X_MODE=zzz ./parent sub failed with Invalid choice for option mode: zzz and exit 181, and completing the parent failed the same way. The runners (usage bash, zsh, fish, powershell, exec) parse the script's command line before its body starts, and the body is what prints the spec, so the spec could never be read. The flag has nothing to do with the spec.
When a mount did fail, the message ended with the internal sh -c ./child --mount and never mentioned sub, the command being resolved. And the exit codes were undocumented.
Change
Env values. When the script was started by usage itself (__USAGE is set, as it is for every run= that usage executes) and the parse fails, the runner takes the spec's env-bound variables out of the environment and puts them back one at a time, keeping each only if the parse still goes through with no complaint it did not have before. Rejected values are left out and valid ones (for example the value a required argument depends on) are kept, whatever order they are declared in. If any error remains, the original one is reported. When none of the spec's env variables is set, the error is reported as before with no second parse.
After the change, X_MODE=zzz ./parent sub prints parent ok, and X_MODE=zzz usage complete-word ... offers candidates.
Mount errors. A failing mount now reads:
Error: Missing required arg: <project>
usage::shell
could not read the commands mounted under `sub`: exited with code 1
sh -c ./child2
This text comes from usage-lib, so a CLI built on it shows the same wording.
Exit codes. The codes are unchanged and now documented in docs/cli/scripts.md: the script's own code when it runs, 1 when the command line does not satisfy the spec, and 181 when usage could not read or run something the spec depends on, such as an invalid spec or a failing mount.
Unchanged:
Running the script yourself (X_MODE=zzz ./child) still exits 1 with Invalid choice.
A valid env value still reaches the script as usage_mode.
A command line that is wrong on its own, such as a bad value typed as --mode zzz, is still reported.
Validation
New integration tests in cli/tests/mount_script_env.rs cover a mount through usage bash and usage exec, complete-word against a mount, a valid env value kept beside a rejected one, a binding that depends on one restored later, a failing mount's message and exit code, and the unchanged cases above. The mount, completion and dependency tests fail without the change. The usage-lib and usage-cli suites and clippy pass.

…ted value
The script runners parse the script's command line before its body starts,
and that parse validates env-bound flags. A `mount run=` (or a completer)
that fetches another usage script's spec therefore failed, with exit 181,
whenever the environment held a value one of the script's flags rejects,
although the spec never uses that flag.
When usage itself started the script (`__USAGE` is set) and the parse
fails, retry once with the flags' env bindings ignored. The original error
stands if the retry fails too, and runs not started by usage keep the
strict parse.

Script argument parsing now retries with selected environment bindings withheld when the initial parse fails and __USAGE is set. Shell and exec runners use the shared parser. Mounted-command failures identify the command, and script documentation describes relevant exit codes.
Changes: Script argument parsing and mounted commands

Summary
Parser fallback and CLI integration cli/src/cli/shell.rs, cli/src/cli/exec.rs
parse_script_args retries failed parses by withholding spec-bound environment values and restoring them selectively. Shell::run and Exec::run use the helper.
Unix tests cover mounted-script spec loading and completion with invalid environment values, direct execution errors, and valid and invalid environment bindings. They also compare mounted-command failures with direct script failures.
Mount error reporting and exit-code documentation lib/src/spec/cmd.rs, docs/cli/scripts.md
Mount errors identify the owning command when a ShellError occurs. Documentation describes script and usage exit codes and shows a mounted-command failure.
The PR is low risk overall, but these localized issues affect test reliability and mount-failure diagnostics.

Both match the raw summary (shell.rs parse_script_args retry logic, exec.rs parser switch, and cmd.rs ShellError naming) and the linked objectives (#1590). Explanation
The implementation satisfies the main [#1590] spec-loading requirement. parse_script_args is used by the shell and exec runners, and the reported integration tests cover rejected environment values, valid dependent bindings, completion, and direct-run behavior. SpecCommand::mount now adds the resolved command name to mount ShellError messages. However, [#1590] also requests that a failing mount exit like other usage errors. Thanks for the quick turnaround. I checked 3866a3f against the reproductions from #1590: the
bash, zsh, powershell, and exec children, complete-word, and the hidden-subcommand pattern
with a global=#true env-bound flag. All of them now work, and running the child directly still
rejects the value. Two problems remain with the retry, plus one scope question.
1. A valid env value elsewhere in the spec still breaks the fetch. (Greptile's P1, confirmed.)
The retry drops every env binding, not just the rejected one, so a child that also takes a
required env-bound argument still fails:
#!/usr/bin/env -S usage bash#USAGE flag "--mount" hide=#true#USAGE flag "--mode <m>" env="X_MODE" { choices "a" "b" }#USAGE arg "<project>" env="PROJECT"if [[ "${usage_mount:-}"==true ]];thenecho'flag "--mode <m>"';exit 0;fi
$ PROJECT=demo X_MODE=a ./parent sub # parent ok
$ PROJECT=demo X_MODE=zzz ./parent sub # Invalid choice for option mode: zzz ... exit 181
2. When the retry succeeds, valid env values silently become defaults. The script body runs
with the results of the retry:
#!/usr/bin/env -S usage bash#USAGE flag "--mode <m>" env="X_MODE" { choices "a" "b" }#USAGE flag "--project <p>" env="PROJECT" default="default-proj"echo"mode=${usage_mode:-} project=${usage_project:-}"
__USAGE is set for every run=, not only mounts, and every descendant inherits it. So a complete run= or choices run= helper that is itself a usage script and does real work would
quietly use the default project instead of reporting the bad value. Dropping only the rejected
bindings and keeping the valid ones would fix both 1 and 2. A test with a valid env value next to
a rejected one would cover them; the current tests don't.
3. Scope. The PR says it leaves out the misleading error (sh -c ./child --mount rather than
the mounted subcommand) and the undocumented exit code 181, but Fixes #1590 would close the
issue anyway. Should that part stay open on #1590, or move to its own issue?
The retry for a script started by usage dropped every env binding, so a
required argument fed by a valid env value made the retry fail too. Put
the spec's env-bound variables back one at a time instead, keeping each
only if the parse still goes through with no more errors, and skip the
retry when none of them is set so a bad command line costs no second parse.

Thanks, 5bf081d fixes both points: a required env-bound argument next to a rejected value now
works in either declaration order, and valid values reach the child instead of being replaced by
defaults. I'd like to come back to the scope question, though, since Fixes #1590 would close the
issue with the error-reporting half unresolved.
I went back to the exit code first. 181 came in with #152 as a sentinel for "usage failed, not
your script", which makes sense since usage bash/usage exec pass the script's own code through.
So #1590's "exit like other usage errors" was the wrong ask. The real problems are:
The sentinel is inconsistent.X_MODE=zzz ./child fails inside usage's own parse, before
the script starts, yet exits 1. Through a mount, the same failure exits 181. A caller can't use
181 to tell the two cases apart, which is the point of having it.
It's undocumented. Nothing in docs/ mentions 181, so nobody can rely on it.
The message names the wrong thing. The user ran ./parent sub. The error ends with the
internal sh -c ./child --mount and never mentions sub, so it reads like a crash.
Something like this would point at the real cause:
Error: Invalid choice for option mode: zzz, expected one of a, b # child's stderr, as now
Error: could not read the commands mounted under `sub`: `./child --mount` exited with code 1
Any of these could reasonably land here or separately. If they're out of scope for this PR,
could the body say Refs #1590 instead of Fixes, so the issue stays open for them (or I can
open a separate issue and you can close #1590 with this PR)? Whichever you prefer.

mount() runs discovery through sh(&cmd), which exports __USAGE. The nested usage bash and usage exec processes therefore use the relaxed parser. Their spawned script bodies inherit __USAGE because apply_parsed_env only overlays parsed values and neither runner removes the marker. If a mounted body starts another usage script, that descendant can also accept an invalid environment-bound value and run without reporting it.

Scope question, since this PR says Fixes #1590: the PR leaves out the other half of that issue
(listed under "Not in this PR"), and merging would close the issue anyway.
Exit 181 is inconsistent. It's the sentinel from #152 for "usage failed, not your script",
but X_MODE=zzz ./child fails in usage's own parse and exits 1. The same failure through a
mount exits 181.
181 is undocumented. Nothing in docs/ mentions it.
The mount error names the internal sh -c ./child --mount, not the subcommand (sub) that
was being resolved.
Could the body say Refs #1590 so the issue stays open for those, or should I open a separate
issue for them?
Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.
Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.
Shadow comparison
Parsing mise use -g node@20 against a shadow of mise's committed spec.
Reported, not gated: the shadow grows as the derive learns to express more, so
what to watch is the ratio rather than either column.
…exit codes
A `mount run=` that failed reported only the internal `sh -c ...` call, so
`./parent sub` ended with a message that never mentioned `sub`. The error
now starts with "could not read the commands mounted under `sub`".
Document what the script runners exit with: the script's own code, `1` when
the command line does not satisfy the spec, and `181` when usage could not
read or run something the spec depends on. The codes themselves are
unchanged.

fix(cli): let a mount read a script's spec when its env holds a rejected value
fix(lib): read a mounted script's spec despite a rejected env value, and name the failing mount
Oct 29, 2026
@ssevertson-svg thanks for the thorough review, and for the exit-code analysis. Rather than split it out, 3250175 brings the error-reporting half into this PR, so Fixes #1590 stays.
Mount error. A failing mount now starts with could not read the commands mounted under `sub` , followed by the child's message and the sh -c line as before.
Exit codes.181 and 1 are documented in docs/cli/scripts.md: the script's own code when it runs, 1 when the command line does not satisfy the spec, 181 when usage could not read or run something the spec depends on. I did not change the codes themselves. Making a rejected command line exit 181 would change the exit status of every bad-argument failure in every script run through usage, which seemed too large for this PR. So X_MODE=zzz ./child still exits 1 while the same failure through a mount exits 181, and the docs now say why.
The single-pass add-back you described in your last comment was fixed in 62f3e99, with a test that fails if the pass is not repeated.
If you would rather the exit codes move, that is a good follow-up issue.
