## Signed commits

Every commit that reaches the default branch must be signed; a ruleset refuses
unsigned pushes. Estate policy:
[SIGNING-POLICY](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc).

- **People and interactive agents** sign with an SSH key registered on GitHub
as a *signing* key (`gpg.format=ssh`, `user.signingkey=<key>.pub`,
`commit.gpgsign=true`). The committer email must be verified on that account.
- **Apps, bots and workflows** never `git push` local commits. They write
through the API (`createCommitOnBranch` or the estate `signed-push` action)
so that GitHub signs each commit.
- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

official Git documentation gpg.format default openpgp commit.gpgsign

💡 Result:

The official Git documentation says:

- **`gpg.format`** defaults to `openpgp`; other supported formats include `x509` and `ssh`. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config?utm_source=openai))
- **`commit.gpgSign`** controls whether all commits should be GPG-signed. The documentation doesn’t explicitly state its default; unset, it does not enable signing by itself. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-config))

Align the contributor signing command with the SSH policy.

.github/SECURITY.md still tells contributors to run git config commit.gpgsign true. Git defaults gpg.format to openpgp, so this can create a GPG-signed commit. That satisfies generic signed-commit acceptance but violates the SSH requirement for people and interactive agents.

Update the guidance:

Suggested fix
-- Use signed commits (`git config commit.gpgsign true`)
+- Use SSH-signed commits with a GitHub-registered signing key and verified
+ committer email (`git config gpg.format ssh`,
+ `git config user.signingkey <key>.pub`,
+ `git config commit.gpgsign true`)

Review comment at @CONTRIBUTING.md around lines 13 - 18:
Update the contributor signing guidance so people and interactive agents
configure SSH commit signing with a GitHub-registered signing key and verified
committer email, rather than enabling commit signing alone. Include the SSH
format, signing-key, and commit-signing settings.
