Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added contribution guidance requiring signed commits on the default branch, including signing methods for people, agents and automation.
    • Clarified that pull requests must use squash merges and that unsigned branches need to be recreated with signed commits.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide now states commit-signing requirements. It describes signing methods for people and interactive agents, commit creation methods for apps and workflows, and branch and merge requirements.

The guide requires signed commits and describes signing methods for people and interactive agents. It directs apps, bots, and workflows to create commits through the API or signed-push action. It also specifies squash merges, signed cherry-picks for unsigned branches, and that rebase-merge is disabled.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/CONTRIBUTING.md: Added signing requirements and workflows: people and interactive agents use registered SSH signing keys and verified committer emails; apps, bots and workflows create commits through the API or estate signed-push action. PRs must be squash-merged because the ruleset checks every branch commit; unsigned branches must be recreated with signed cherry-picks, and rebase-merge is disabled.

Comment thread .github/CONTRIBUTING.md
- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

Align the rebase-merge statement with repository settings.

.github/settings.yml enables rebase merges and is managed by the probot/settings app. This conflicts with the documentation. If rebase merges must remain disabled, set allow_rebase_merge to false; otherwise, update the documentation.
