## Signed commits

Every commit that reaches the default branch must be signed; a ruleset refuses
unsigned pushes. Estate policy:
[SIGNING-POLICY](https://github.com/hyperpolymath/standards/blob/main/docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc).

- **People and interactive agents** sign with an SSH key registered on GitHub
as a *signing* key (`gpg.format=ssh`, `user.signingkey=<key>.pub`,
`commit.gpgsign=true`). The committer email must be verified on that account.
- **Apps, bots and workflows** never `git push` local commits. They write
through the API (`createCommitOnBranch` or the estate `signed-push` action)
so that GitHub signs each commit.
- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not require signed commits on the PR branch for squash merges.

GitHub creates a new squash commit on the protected default branch. The branch commits are not themselves the commits that reach the default branch. Therefore, the statement that one unsigned branch commit blocks a squash merge is incorrect for this repository's squash workflow and can make contributors recreate branches unnecessarily.

Change only the affected sentence:

Suggested fix
- The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch, not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
+ GitHub signs the squash commit that reaches the default branch, so commits on the PR branch do not need individual signatures for a squash merge.

Review comment at @.github/CONTRIBUTING.md around lines 23 - 38:
Update only the affected sentence in the signed-commit guidance under “Merge PRs
with squash” to clarify that GitHub signs the squash commit reaching the default
branch and PR-branch commits do not need individual signatures for a squash
merge. Preserve the surrounding guidance.
