What this adds

A release gets a third file, BetterWindowsServices-win-x64.msi, beside the two archives, which stay as they are.

  • Installs the window and the command line into Program Files\Better Windows Services for every account on the machine, the window in the Start menu, the folder on the machine's PATH (so bws answers in a new terminal and a scheduled task), one entry in Settings, Apps with neither Change nor Repair.
  • Carries exactly what the two archives hold - both executables, LICENSE, THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md.
  • A newer version installs over an older one, a rebuild of the same version replaces the first build, an older version is refused with a sentence, nothing that is running is closed.
  • Uninstalling removes the programs, the Start menu entry, the PATH entry and the registry key, and leaves the window's own file in %APPDATA% and the folder it unpacks into as administrator under ProgramData.

How a release builds it

  • Phase B (packaging/sign-release.ps1): asks build-msi.ps1 -Check before the card signs anything, builds the installer from the two SIGNED package folders after repacking, signs it with the product name as the description, holds it to the same pin and timestamp as the programs, writes its SBOM and its checksum. A release candidate gets none.
  • Phase C (attest-signed.yml): attests the installer's SBOM when the release carries one, and requires its digest from phase B.
  • Phase D (verify-release.yml): expects the installer, its SBOM and its bundle, checks its signature, and now checks out the tree of the TAG, so a release checked again later is held to what it published.
  • packaging/sbom.ps1 -PackageId installer -DepsFolder: the components of both packages, each checked in both directions against its own build manifest. The two archive documents come out byte for byte as before, apart from the date.

The installer source is a WiX 5.0.2 template with no extension, no custom action and no dialogs of WiX's own. build-msi.ps1 asks the built database for that (empty CustomAction and Binary tables) before moving it anywhere.

How it is checked

  • packaging/test-installer.ps1 asks a machine what the installer does: install, upgrade while a bws run holds bws.exe, a rebuild of the same version, an older version, an uninstall with somebody else's file in the folder. After each step it compares every file, the Programs and Features entry, the machine PATH including its registry value and kind, a new process finding bws, the Start menu entry and the registry key. Run on Windows Server 2025: 64 checks ok, and its -SelfTest canary shows the folder comparison can fail.
  • New workflow installer.yml runs it on a clean windows-latest runner when a pull request touches packaging/, src/ or the version files. Not a required check.
  • InstallerGuards (15 tests) holds the lines those measurements rest on, against the source build-msi.ps1 renders. 15 new mutation entries, 15 caught.
  • The published-file sweep now reads *.ps1 and *.wxs.

Not checked yet

  • Phases B, C and D with the installer have not run - the first tag carrying the template is their first measurement.
  • The UAC prompt with the signature's name, and a double click while the window is open.
  • The workflow above has not run on a runner before this pull request.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a signed Windows x64 installer for machine-wide installation, with Start menu and PATH entries. The installer supports upgrades, silent installation, and clean removal.
    • Added installer downloads and guidance alongside the existing portable ZIP archives.
  • Release Improvements

    • Release verification now checks installer signatures, digests, software bill of materials, and attestations.
    • Added automated Windows installer checks for installation, upgrades, downgrade refusal, and uninstall behavior.

A release gets a third file, BetterWindowsServices-win-x64.msi. It installs
the window and the command line into Program Files\Better Windows Services for
every account on the machine, puts the window in the Start menu and the folder
on the machine's PATH, and carries exactly what the two archives hold. The
archives stay as they are.

The installer is built in phase B from the two signed packages and signed the
same way, with the product's name as the signature's description. Whether this
machine can build it is asked before the card signs anything. It gets its own
bill of materials - the components of both packages, each checked against its
own build manifest - and its own attestation in phase C. Phase D expects it,
checks its signature, and now reads the tree of the tag it verifies, so an
older release is held to what it published. A release candidate gets none.

The source is a WiX 5.0.2 template with no extension, no custom action and no
dialogs of WiX's own, and build-msi.ps1 asks the built database the same. It
installs per machine, keeps one UpgradeCode for good, replaces the old product
first so a rebuild of a version really replaces its files, refuses an older
version with a sentence, and closes nothing that is running.

test-installer.ps1 asks a machine what the installer does: install, upgrade
while a bws run holds bws.exe, a rebuild of the same version, an older version,
and an uninstall with somebody else's file in the folder - comparing every file,
the Programs and Features entry, the machine PATH including its registry value,
a new process finding bws, the Start menu entry and the registry key. A new
workflow runs it on a clean runner when a pull request touches the packaging or
the programs. InstallerGuards holds the lines those measurements rest on.

README, the site and the changelog say where the installer is and what it
leaves behind. The published-file sweep now reads PowerShell scripts and the
installer source too.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds a Windows x64 MSI installer alongside the existing ZIP archives. It defines and tests machine-wide installation, adds the installer to eligible release signing and verification flows, and updates the website and documentation with installer details.

Changes: Windows MSI installer

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and build the MSI
packaging/components.json, packaging/msi/BetterWindowsServices.wxs, packaging/build-msi.ps1, tests/Bws.Architecture.Tests/InstallerGuards.cs, tests/Bws.Architecture.Tests/PublicSurfaceGuards.cs
The package register identifies the installer and its contents. The WiX template defines its per-machine installation, upgrade settings, PATH entry, and Start Menu shortcut. The build script validates inputs and the generated MSI. Architecture tests check the rendered installer, version bounds, and related package properties.
Exercise installation on Windows
packaging/test-installer.ps1, .github/workflows/installer.yml, tests/Bws.Architecture.Tests/InstallerGuards.cs
The test script checks installation, upgrades, same-version replacement, downgrade refusal, and uninstall cleanup. The Windows workflow runs the test and uploads reports and logs.
Add the installer to release assets
packaging/sbom.ps1, packaging/sign-release.ps1, .github/workflows/verify-release.yml, .github/workflows/attest-signed.yml, tests/Bws.Architecture.Tests/InstallerGuards.cs
SBOM generation supports installers containing multiple registered packages. Eligible releases build and sign the MSI, generate its SBOM, and include it in digest and attestation checks. Release verification checks the tagged tree and installer signature; signed attestation includes the MSI when present.
Publish installer details
site/Bws.Site/SiteConfig.cs, site/Bws.Site/Tokens.cs, site/site.json, site/pages/*, README.md, CHANGELOG.md, tests/Bws.Site.Tests/GeneratorTests.cs
Site configuration and download content include the installer. The README and changelog describe its installation behavior and distinguish it from portable ZIP archives. The site title-length test uses updated title text.

Release-candidate verification would fail because the verification step checks for an installer that candidates do not include. Fix this before merging. The other open items are a hang risk in a test helper and small documentation and maintenance gaps.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The PR adds substantial tests for the MSI source, installer behavior, and release wiring, and it does not delete or weaken existing tests. However, packaging/sbom.ps1 adds a new installer SBOM mode with -DepsFolder, package-union validation, version-consistency checks, and MSI identity handling. No test references or executes sbom.ps1; InstallerGuards only checks that sign-release.ps1 contains the installer invocation. This changed release behavior is therefore not covered by tests.

Resolution

Add automated tests for packaging/sbom.ps1 using temporary installer and package dependency manifests. Verify successful installer SBOM generation, the retained .msi identity and download URL, deduplicated components, and rejection of unknown packages, missing manifests, and conflicting resolved versions. Keep an archive-mode regression case.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The new packaging/test-installer.ps1 trusts fields from kit.json. Read-Kit parses the caller-supplied -KitFolder\kit.json with ConvertFrom-Json at line 247 but performs no schema or path validation. The untrusted cliExe is concatenated into cmd.exe /c strings at lines 319-320, so shell metacharacters can execute commands. The same field controls Join-Path and ProcessStartInfo.FileName at lines 350 and 503/405, allowing execution outside the kit folder. productName also controls machine paths at lines 263-265. Malformed JSON throws before the main try block. This is introduced by the new test harness, which is the only source of the kit consumed by Read-Kit.

Resolution

Treat kit.json as untrusted input. Before using it, bound its size, catch ConvertFrom-Json errors, validate every required property and type, and reject values that do not match the generated register and safe basenames. Resolve executable paths with Path.GetFullPath and require them to remain under the kit or installed folder. Replace cmd.exe /c with direct ProcessStartInfo/Start-Process calls using FileName plus an argument list such as @('--version'); use where.exe directly if PATH lookup is required. Validate productName and publisher before using them in filesystem or registry paths, and return the documented input-error code instead of terminating on malformed JSON.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR adds a per-machine MSI that changes persistent system state. The WiX template writes HKLM registry values and appends the install folder to the machine PATH (packaging/msi/BetterWindowsServices.wxs:93-99, 108-117). It marks the PATH entry non-permanent, but it does not save existing registry or PATH state for crash or restart recovery. The test harness only records the original PATH in memory and restores the installation in finally; after an interrupted run it refuses to start and requires manual -Cleanup (packaging/test-installer.ps1:35-38, 472-477). Normal uninstall is visible through Programs and Features, but the required stop, crash, and next-start restoration is not implemented.

Resolution

Add explicit state-preserving rollback and recovery. Save the original machine PATH, its registry value kind, and any pre-existing product-key values before installation; restore them on uninstall and failed or interrupted installation. Add startup recovery for interrupted test or installer operations, and verify recovery after forced termination or restart. Keep the existing visible uninstall path and test that it restores every changed registry and PATH value.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

Two new SBOM error messages state the invalid condition but do not tell the release operator how to fix it. In packaging/sbom.ps1:92, sbom: the register names no installer should direct the operator to add the installer registration or use cli/gui. At packaging/sbom.ps1:102, sbom: the installer carries no package, which cannot be right should direct the operator to populate installer.contents with registered package IDs.

Resolution

Replace these messages with actionable text, for example: sbom: packaging/components.json has no installer entry. Add installer.file and installer.contents, or describe cli/gui instead. and sbom: installer.contents is empty. Add at least one registered package ID, such as gui or cli.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The new installer test harness leaves native resources open. Invoke-Msi creates a System.Diagnostics.Process at packaging/test-installer.ps1:382 and never disposes it; its timeout path at lines 386-388 also returns while msiexec.exe can still run. Start-HeldRun creates a redirected-output System.Diagnostics.Process at lines 405-414. The finally block only calls Kill() at lines 580-585 and never waits, closes StandardOutput, or disposes the process. Test-Installed also creates WScript.Shell and a shortcut COM object at line 357 without releasing either object. These resources are introduced by this pull request and are not released on all paths.

Resolution

In packaging/test-installer.ps1, wrap every msiexec process in try/finally; on timeout, terminate it, wait for termination, then dispose the Process object. After the held bws process finishes or is killed, wait for it, dispose its StandardOutput reader, and dispose the process in the outer finally. Store the WScript.Shell object separately and release both it and the shortcut COM object with Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject in a finally block, releasing the shortcut before the shell.

Phase D runs the README's verification commands as written, and two of them
name the installer, which a release candidate does not publish. For a
candidate those two are now left out, and the step says how many - every
other command still runs, and a full release runs all of them.

Phase C attests the installer under the name it already holds in INSTALLER,
the one copy InstallerGuards compares with the register, rather than under a
second literal that a rename would leave behind.

The home page lists the installer in its table of files, in English and in
Polish, as the download page already does.

The guard that runs build-msi.ps1 reads both output channels as they arrive,
so its 60 second limit is the one that holds: a pwsh that hung would have
held a read to the end for ever. On the limit it ends the whole process tree
and fails with what was said.

The first run of the installer job on a clean runner failed one check: after
the uninstall the machine PATH held the same text to the character, and its
registry kind had gone from ExpandString to String. On the throwaway machine
the kind had stayed.

Measured on that machine both ways: with %SystemRoot% in the PATH, Windows
Installer keeps ExpandString, and with the same PATH expanded so it holds no
variable, it writes it back as String. With no variable in the text the two
kinds read the same for every reader, so the test now holds the text to the
character, holds the kind where the PATH holds a variable, and otherwise says
the change in a note instead of passing it in silence.

The installer job's second run on a clean runner found that a bws run left
going during an upgrade does not always outlive it. The upgrade succeeds and
moves the old bws.exe aside, and bws, a single-file .NET program, reads parts
of itself out of that file the first time it needs them: the run next opened
its error channel, needed System.Text.Encoding.Extensions, did not find the
file and ended with an unhandled exception. On the throwaway machine the same
run needed nothing more and finished with 0.

So the sentence that a running bws keeps its old copy until it ends was not
true. README, the changelog, the download page and the installer source now
say to close the window and any running bws before upgrading, because a copy
left running can stop with an error. The installer source also says the exit
code it was measured with, 0, where it said 3010.

The test still requires the upgrade to succeed with bws.exe in use, and says
on every run which of the two became of the held run, instead of holding it to
an answer that is not the installer's.
