PR 11 of 13 for clerk migrate (plan: slice-prs.md on #479). Stacked on #528: review that first, then this one, which shows only its own diff. It adds Auth.js export and import. Still behind CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate.

Try it

CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate export authjs --db-url "$AUTHJS_DB_URL"
CLERK_EXPERIMENTAL=migrate clerk migrate import <export-run-id> --dry-run

What it does

  • export authjs reads id, name, email and emailVerified from a table called User, user or users. It falls back to email_verified for the legacy NextAuth table or a Prisma @map.
  • A schema that renames another column gets a message with the query to run instead, aliasing the column back.

Reviewing

Ported from #479 at 7a820406. sources/authjs.ts and export/authjs.ts match #479. One change from #479: the missing-column hint in lib/db.ts no longer tells you to write your own query for @map("email_verified"), which the exporter now reads. Its example is a renamed name column instead.

Tests

  • bun run test covers the unit and integration tests.
  • The live slice suite (pnpm test:migrate:slice4e) exports from the real Auth.js test app, including a snake_case email_verified schema with half the users unverified.

📝 Walkthrough

The migration CLI now exports users from Auth.js databases and registers Auth.js as a migration source. Export searches supported user tables and verification columns, then maps rows to exported users. Import maps user fields, routes users based on email verification timestamps, and splits names. Shared database export handling converts valid dates to ISO strings and omits invalid dates. Tests and documentation cover both migration paths, connection options, and data that Auth.js does not carry.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5c1d1

The Auth.js export warning may send some users looking for credentials in database tables even when their application stores them elsewhere. This is a bounded migration-planning documentation risk; the other tracked concerns are corrected.

Approving. A few non-blocking notes:

  • Missing-column hint query fails on the Prisma schema it uses as its example (packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/lib/db.ts:380): The hint's example is a Prisma schema with @map("full_name") on name, but its query selects email_verified. A default Prisma Auth.js schema names that column emailVerified, and the table is "User", which Postgres requires to be quoted. A user who copies this query gets another column "email_verified" does not exist error. They need "emailVerified" AS email_verified so the authjs source can still map the column.

  • MySQL 'no user table' error gets connection advice (packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/export/authjs.ts:111): On MySQL with no Auth.js table, the export throws No Auth.js user table found. Tried User, user, users. Table 'db.users' doesn't exist. isMissingTable here matches doesn't exist, but the table check in describeDbError (db.ts:388) only matches does not exist. The error falls through to the generic hint, "Check the connection string, that the server is running, and that it is reachable from here." That sends the user to the connection, which worked. Postgres and SQLite get the correct 'expected table was not found' hint.

🟡 Minor · Require parseable Auth.js verification timestamps. · authjs.ts:35-45

packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/sources/authjs.ts:35-45
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Require parseable Auth.js verification timestamps.

email_verified: "not-a-date" passes the JSON import path and reaches routeByVerification. The timestamp branch treats it as verified, then leaves the address in Clerk’s primary email field. This promotes a malformed source value to a verified email.

The Auth.js export contract represents valid dates as ISO strings and omits invalid dates. Require timestamp strings to parse before treating them as verified.

🟡 Minor · Preserve numeric zero timestamps in the Auth.js export. · authjs.ts:144-150

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve numeric zero timestamps in the Auth.js export.

SQLite and libsql can return an integer timestamp as the number 0. The timestamp contract treats non-null numbers as verified, but this truthiness check omits 0 from both the export and verification coverage.

`clerk migrate export authjs` reads an Auth.js database over --db-url (or
AUTHJS_DB_URL, or a prompt): Postgres, MySQL, libsql/Turso or SQLite. Auth.js
has no single schema, so it tries the `User`, `user` and `users` tables in
turn and reports which one it read, and reads the verified column as
`emailVerified`, or `email_verified` on a legacy NextAuth table. A schema
missing a column the export reads gets advice naming the columns and a
SELECT to export with instead.
`clerk migrate import` reads Auth.js exports: `email_verified` is a nullable
timestamp, `name` is split into first and last name, and users arrive
without passwords, since Auth.js core is passwordless.

…rted

The warning said Auth.js users sign in with OAuth or email links. An app
using the Credentials provider keeps its own passwords, which the export
does not read, so the operator needs to migrate those separately or have
those users reset their password. The warning, the source note and the
README now say so.

… columns

Postgres keeps a quoted "User" apart from "user", so an app's own User
table stopped the search before Auth.js's table was tried. A candidate
without the columns is now passed over; the first column error is still
the one thrown when nothing reads.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Auth.js hint replaced the only test of the generic advice that the
Supabase and Better Auth exports get.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…wn example

The hint names a Prisma schema but selected email_verified, while
Prisma's Auth.js schema has "emailVerified" in a quoted "User" table,
so the query it suggested failed the same way. It now aliases that
column, quotes the table, and says MySQL quotes with backticks.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Auth.js section says its core stores no passwords, but the list of
platforms that export none named only three. Auth.js is the fourth, and
its export says so on every run like the others.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…er it chose to

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…th schema

The lookup tried only unqualified names, so an app on @auth/supabase-adapter
got "No Auth.js user table found", or, with its own public.users, silently
read that instead. On Postgres, next_auth.users is now tried first, with the
schema and table quoted apart.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…export

A MySQL zero date can come back from Bun as an Invalid Date, whose
toISOString() throws and ends the export. One shared guard, used by the
Supabase, Better Auth and Auth.js exports, leaves such a value out: for
Auth.js's emailVerified, that reads as unverified.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
"Four platforms export no passwords" and "These three read the database" each
went stale when the next platform landed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Any single word with an @ was dropped as Auth0's email placeholder, so an
Auth.js user named "jane@acme" lost their name. Now only a name that is one
of the user's own email addresses is dropped, for every source.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… rows

A date that holds no real date is left out of the export, but the Supabase
and Better Auth coverage counted it from the row, so the report called the
user confirmed while the file said unverified.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on export/authjs.ts:144-150 (keep a numeric zero timestamp as verified):

Leaving this as is, deliberately. 0 is the Unix epoch, and no app verified an address then. In integer-timestamp schemas it shows up as a default or a missing value, not a real verification. Exporting it as verified would make an address nobody proved usable for sign-in, so 0 stays unverified, as the comment there says.

@royanger Thanks for the clarification. I checked packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/export/authjs.ts. The code and comment deliberately treat numeric 0 as unverified.

My suggestion would turn that missing-value sentinel into a verification signal. I withdraw the finding. No change is needed.

Learning: In clerk/cli, packages/cli-core/src/commands/migrate/export/authjs.ts deliberately treats a numeric email_verified value of 0 as unverified. For this exporter, zero represents a default or missing timestamp, not evidence of email verification. Do not suggest preserving numeric zero as a verified timestamp.
