Owner

What

Step 3 of the unified-layout ADR: the path registry, shipped first by owner decision on 2026-10-20 ("registry first"). Ticket: BRO-3216 (https://linear.app/broomva/issue/BRO-3216). ADR: workspace docs/adrs/2026-10-19-unified-broomva-layout.html, decision 2.

  • references/paths.toml lists every Broomva name in three scopes:
    • repo.*: under the git top level, in .broomva/ (legacy .control/);
    • workspace.*: under $BROOMVA_WORKSPACE, then MAESTRO_WORKSPACE, then BSTACK_WORKSPACE, defaulting to ~/broomva;
    • machine.*: under $BROOMVA_HOME, defaulting to ~/.broomva.
  • scripts/gen_paths.py validates the table and generates two readers, each embedding the table's sha256. No reader looks the registry up at run time.
    • scripts/broomva_paths.py: Python 3.9+, the Mac's system python in hooks.
    • scripts/lib/broomva-paths.sh: bash 3.2.
  • Migration rule, on disk and inside a git tree:
    • the new location if it exists, else the legacy one;
    • while a repo still has its .control/, a name with no file yet resolves there, so a writer never splits a ledger before the move.
  • Repo root: the git top level of the target, else of $CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR. Never the cwd, and never $HOME.
  • OWNER_PATHS / BROOMVA_OWNER_PATHS: the literal owner list (policy, preauth, allowed_signers, hooks) under both spellings, for the gates to hold in step 2.
  • bstack doctor §30:
    • fails a stale reader, a git repo at $HOME, and a name present under both roots;
    • reports any legacy root still present, which is expected until the move.

Nothing switches to the registry in this PR; it only adds it. Dual-keying the gates (p9, control-gate-hook.sh), the workspace CI and classifiers, and the tree readers in Maestro and Maestro-Paseo follow as separate PRs.

Evidence

  • tests/broomva-paths.test.sh (8 checks):
    • 29 unit cases, with the shell and Python readers agreeing on every disk and tree state;
    • gen_paths.py --check;
    • doctor §30 against seeded faults: a stale reader and a shadowed name.
  • Mutation: 22 of 22 rule mutations caught. They were applied through the generator's templates, so the drift check can't count as the catch.
  • Live: on the workspace, repo.policy resolves to .control/policy.yaml, repo.loops to .broomva/loops, and machine.work to ~/maestro. Doctor §30 passes with the expected [info] lines.
  • Full suite: 84 test files pass locally. One first failed: marketplace.json was still at 0.48.2, which is fixed. ShellCheck is clean.

Dep-chain (P14)

  • Upstream: the ADR (ws#1054, 55f19a3c5) and the BRO-2909 machine layout (scripts/broomva_home.py, unchanged).
  • Downstream consumers: none yet. Next come the bstack gate dual-key PR, workspace CI and classifiers, life-paths (Rust embed), and Maestro (BRO-3202).

    • Updated the plugin and project version to 0.49.0.

…e lives — v0.49.0 (BRO-3216)

references/paths.toml names every Broomva path in three scopes (repo.* under
the git top level, legacy .control/; workspace.* under $BROOMVA_WORKSPACE;
machine.* under $BROOMVA_HOME). scripts/gen_paths.py embeds it into
scripts/broomva_paths.py (Python 3.9+) and scripts/lib/broomva-paths.sh
(bash 3.2), each carrying the table's sha256. Both apply the ADR's migration
rule on disk and in a git tree, and never take a repo root from the cwd or
from $HOME. OWNER_PATHS is the literal owner list under both spellings, for
the gates (step 2). doctor §30 fails stale readers, a repo at $HOME and
shadowed names. Nothing switches to the registry yet.

Tests: tests/broomva-paths.test.sh (29 unit cases incl. shell/Python parity
on every disk and tree state, gen --check, doctor §30 on seeded faults).
Mutation: 22/22 rules caught.

📝 Walkthrough

The 0.49.0 release adds a canonical path registry and generated Python and Bash readers. The readers resolve repository, workspace, and machine paths, including legacy locations. Doctor checks and tests validate registry consistency, migration rules, and cross-reader behavior.

Changes: Broomva Path Registry

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registry and reader generation
references/paths.toml, scripts/gen_paths.py, scripts/lib/paths-templates/*
The registry defines scoped paths, migration metadata, ownership flags, and runtime-state locations. The generator validates the registry and renders readers with an embedded SHA-256 hash.
Python and Bash path resolution
scripts/broomva_paths.py, scripts/lib/broomva-paths.sh, scripts/lib/paths-templates/*
The readers resolve repository, workspace, and machine paths. They support legacy fallback, repository discovery, Git-tree lookup, migration detection, safety checks, and scoped CLI operations.
Registry validation and release checks
scripts/doctor.sh, tests/*broomva_paths*, CHANGELOG.md, .claude-plugin/*.json, VERSION
Doctor checks registry and migration conditions. Tests cover generation, path resolution, safety, Python/Bash parity, and CLI outcomes. Release metadata changes to version 0.49.0.

This release adds a path registry and generated Python and Bash readers that no consumer uses yet, so production behavior does not change. The remaining issues affect only the test suite and generator. Tests can fail on machines with commit signing or global Git hooks, on Python older than 3.11, or when run as root. Also, the generator's exit status cannot distinguish a too-old Python from a stale reader. The PR is mergeable once these issues are fixed or explicitly accepted.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Expand a leading ~ in BROOMVA_HOME and the workspace variables, as the Python reader does.

Python machine_root() and workspace_root() call Path(value).expanduser() on the environment value. The Bash readers broomva_machine_root and broomva_workspace_root print the value unchanged. A literal value such as BROOMVA_HOME='~/state' can come from a quoted .env file or a launchd plist. With that value, Python resolves to $HOME/state/..., but Bash returns ~/state/.... Bash [ -e ] tests then check that path relative to the cwd. The two readers then disagree, and the Bash reader can write state into a ~ directory under the cwd. The existing parity test only uses absolute values.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Isolate the scratch-repo git calls from the developer's Git config.

The git() helper passes the full os.environ to every git call. As a result, the scratch repos read the user's global and system Git config. That config can change commit behavior:

  • If commit.gpgsign=true is set and no signing agent or key is available, git commit -qm ... fails. This affects TreeRule.setUp, test_before_and_after_the_move, test_a_tree_holding_both_spellings_reads_the_new_one and test_tree_paths_and_repo_roots.
  • If a global core.hooksPath is set, its hooks run on every scratch commit and can reject it. A governance-hooks repo makes this setup likely.

In either case, check=True raises CalledProcessError. The suite then fails for reasons unrelated to the path registry. tests/broomva-paths.test.sh treats that as a hard failure, with no skip path. Disable the global and system config for these calls.

…; repo runtime state (BRO-3216)

Round 1 (A Codex, B, C all FAIL at 4c39b2c), every BLOCKER/MAJOR reproduced:
- generator: strict `legacy` charset, no ./.. parts, quoted shell case
  patterns (a name like `esac` stays a word), unknown tables and a boolean
  version refused, an empty owner list still a valid pattern
- tree reads: TreeReadError / exit 3 for an unreadable tree (unknown rev, no
  git, not a repo); the revision is verified first; --full-tree
- no cwd: an empty target is no target, an empty root an error; GIT_DIR and
  GIT_WORK_TREE removed; $HOME compared by identity (samefile / -ef)
- shell: locals, IFS-proof loops, ~ expansion and absolute env roots as in
  Python, trailing slash normalized
- moved(root): a .control left behind after the move draws nothing back
- [repo_state]: audit/ and leverage-* move to $BROOMVA_HOME/state/repos/<repo>/
- is_owner_path, relative_to_repo (physical folders), shadowed(root, rev)
- doctor §30: registry workspace root, gen --check, every name resolves,
  ~/.control and repo-scope names in ~/.broomva fail, crashes are gaps
- templates moved to scripts/lib/paths-templates/ (no escaped strings)
- names added: grants, decisions, i2p_profile, improvement_log, ~/.broomva files

51 unit cases + 13 wrapper checks; mutation 45/45 (one redundant guard
removed); full suite 84/84, shellcheck clean.

P20 round 1: FAIL (min over strata)

Reviewed head: 4c39b2c. Fixes: the next commit on this branch.

Stratum Model Verdict Scores
A Codex gpt-5.6-terra FAIL 1 BLOCKER, 5 MAJOR
B Claude (fresh, devil's advocate) FAIL correctness 5 · invariants 4 · tests 4
C Claude (security, robustness, devex) FAIL correctness 6 · security 5 · devex 7

Every BLOCKER and MAJOR was reproduced against 4c39b2c before it was fixed.

Finding Strata Fix
A crafted legacy value ('$(id)', ';cmd;') ran code when the shell reader was sourced; a name like esac broke the library A-BLOCKER, B-M5, C-M1 The generator now holds legacy to a strict character set, rejects ./.. parts, and quotes every shell case pattern. An empty owner list still yields a valid pattern. Tests cover each injection form and the shell-keyword names.
A tree read gave the same exit code (1) for "absent" and "could not look" (unfetched ref, no git, not a repo), so a signer lookup could read "no signers" B-M4, C-M2 TreeReadError in Python and exit code 3 in both readers. A revision is verified before any lookup. Unknown names are exit 2 in both.
repo_root(""), repo_path(n, "") and tree_path(n, "") used the cwd A, B-M1, C-M3 An empty target means no target (CLAUDE_PROJECT_DIR or nothing). An empty root raises ValueError (Python) or exits 2 (shell).
Shell tree reads depended on the caller's IFS; _br_* globals leaked into the caller A, B-M3, C-m7 Iteration is over explicit quoted words, and every function uses local. Tested with IFS=/, caller variables, and set -euo pipefail.
~ in env roots was expanded by Python only; relative env roots were accepted A, B-M2, C-m1 Both readers expand ~, and both refuse a root that isn't absolute, as broomva_home.py does. Tested across all 8 workspace-env combinations, and with HOME unset.
After the move, an untracked .control/audit left behind pulled new writes back into .control/ B-M7 moved(root): the tie-break toward legacy applies only while no legacy-capable name is under .broomva/.
Runtime files (audit/, leverage-*) had the wrong destination; the ADR moves them to ~/.broomva/state/repos/<repo>/ A A new [repo_state] table and state_dir(). The names stay repo.audit and use the same migration rule; in-repo rels are legacy only.
Doctor §30 checked a different workspace from the readers, skipped the decision-1 faults, and printed [ok] when a check crashed A, B-M6, C-M4, C-m3, C-m4 §30 now: uses the registry's own workspace root; fails on ~/.control, on repo-scope names at the top of ~/.broomva, and on a git repo at $HOME; runs the generator's --check (with Python 3.11+, catching a hand edit that kept the hash line); checks every name resolves; and reports a crashed check as a gap. _exists() raises on unreadable folders, which Python 3.12+ would otherwise read as clean.
Test gaps: --check was never shown failing; upward search, shell env precedence and several validation paths were untested; the completeness test used a hard-coded list B (test strength) All covered. Completeness now scans bstack's scripts, hooks and assets for every .control/<name>.
Missing names: grants, decisions, i2p_profile, improvement_log, and the files at the top of ~/.broomva B-m Added. The header now says the registry is "every name a reader uses today".
$HOME comparison by string; a set GIT_DIR redirected the root; trailing-slash roots; subfolder tree reads; tree shadows; scope-prefix disagreement; files inside hooks/ not matched as owner-written; lexical versus physical /tmp (C's prediction) B-m, C-m samefile / -ef; git runs without GIT_DIR/GIT_WORK_TREE; roots are normalized; ls-tree --full-tree; shadowed(root, rev); one scope prefix in both readers; is_owner_path / broomva_is_owner_path; relative_to_repo / broomva_repo_relpath resolve the folders.

Refuted or deferred, with reasons:

  • Failing doctor on ~/maestro (A): that is the post-move "One private root" bar. ~/maestro holds the live work items until the machine move (ADR step 4), so it stays reported until then.
  • Shell git timeout (C-m6): macOS has no portable timeout; Python keeps its 10 s limit. Documented.

Evidence:

  • 51 unit cases plus 13 wrapper checks, all passing.
  • The Python reader was exercised on 3.9 (CLI and relative_to_repo).
  • Mutation: 45 of 45 rules caught. One condition whose mutant survived was redundant (broomva_state_dir already refuses an empty root) and was removed.
  • Doctor on this Mac now reports one true gap: ~/.control exists, and its leverage files were rewritten today by a sensor falling back to $HOME.

…no vacuous doctor (BRO-3216)

Round 2 at 37ad747 (A Codex, B, C all FAIL; every round-1 MAJOR confirmed
fixed), each new BLOCKER/MAJOR reproduced:
- state_dir keyed by repo identity: <name>-<sha256(real path)[:12]>; two
  checkouts named `workspace` (six CI runners here) no longer share state
- removed relative_to_repo / is_owner_path (+ shell twins): gate-facing
  matching failed open on case, `..` and symlinks; it belongs to the
  step-2 gates (ws#1053 already matches case-insensitively). OWNER_PATHS
  stays as the literal list.
- owner-written names never read through a symlink (UnsafePath / exit 3)
- workspace root may not be $HOME; ~user refused; empty HOME = account home;
  trailing slashes normalized in both readers
- repo root from the nearest real folder (not a symlink, not a file); no
  git = TreeReadError / exit 3
- doctor §30: every existing root (audited + readers'), never vacuous;
  partially_moved() / `split`; $HOME by identity; every repo name in the
  machine-root stray list; check refuses a missing root
- generator: nested repo paths, case-insensitive duplicates, invalid TOML
- shell: explicit empty rev = usage error; unreadable .broomva = 3; pure-bash
  dirname (a mutant exposed an unbounded walk without PATH)

61 unit cases + 16 wrapper checks; full suite 84/84; shellcheck clean;
mutation: every rule caught, 2 redundant guards removed.

P20 round 2: FAIL (min over strata)

Reviewed head: 37ad747. Fixes: 847f3ed.

Stratum Verdict Scores Round-1 MAJORs
A, Codex gpt-5.6-terra FAIL correctness 3 · invariants 2 · tests 4 injection, IFS, empty target fixed; ~ and doctor not fixed
B, Claude FAIL correctness 6 · invariants 5 · tests 8 all 7 fixed; 23 of 24 mutations killed
C, Claude FAIL correctness 6 · security 6 · devex 7 all 4 fixed

Every BLOCKER and MAJOR was reproduced before it was fixed.

Finding Strata Fix in 847f3ed
Runtime state collided for repos sharing a folder name (six workspace CI runners on this Mac; two SQL-Compass clones) A-BLOCKER, B-M1, C-N3 repo_key is <name>-<sha256(real path)[:12]>, computed the same in both readers. A symlinked path to the same repo gives the same key. / becomes _root-….
The gate-facing helpers failed open: relative_to_repo / is_owner_path let through .Control/policy.yaml (APFS), .. paths, and .broomva -> docs B-M2, C-N2 Removed, not hardened. Matching a written path is the gate's job; the ws#1053 gates already do it case-insensitively. Step 2 wires them to OWNER_PATHS and is reviewed with them.
A symlinked .broomva/policy.yaml replaced the owner's .control/policy.yaml under the prefer-new rule B-M5 Owner-written names are never read through a symlink (UnsafePath, exit 3).
Workspace root ~ or $HOME put workspace.* in the machine root B-M4 Refused in both readers.
~user and an empty HOME disagreed; trailing slashes differed A-M2, B-m One rule: ~ and ~/ expand, ~user is refused, an empty HOME is the account's home. Trailing slashes are dropped in both.
Doctor passed vacuously when the readers' workspace was missing; compared $HOME by string; checked 5 of the repo names in ~/.broomva; check accepted a missing root B-M3, C-N1, A-M5 Every check runs on each existing root (the audited workspace and the readers'); a missing one is reported, never passed. $HOME is compared by identity. The stray list covers every repo name. check refuses a missing root.
One stray file under .broomva/ marks a repo moved and silently splits its ledgers (C's located prediction); an old .control/ after the move (A-M4) C, A-M4 partially_moved() and a doctor gap for a moved repo whose .control/ still holds governance. A .control/ in a repo that hasn't moved stays [info] until step 4: failing on it now would fail every repo.
The generator accepted nested repo paths, case-insensitive duplicates and invalid TOML (traceback) A-M3, B-m All three refused as RegistryError. Machine nesting such as ledger and ledger/loops/ticks.jsonl stays allowed.
An explicit empty rev was read as HEAD in shell; unreadable .broomva gave exit 0 in shell; no git looked like "not a repo"; .control as a file gave a different root B-m, C-m All now match Python: exit 2, exit 3, TreeReadError / exit 3, and the repo root from the nearest real folder.
Shell timeout not documented C-m3 Documented in the shell library header and the CHANGELOG.

Found by mutation during this round:

  • An unbounded walk in broomva_repo_root when PATH can't reach dirname. Fixed with a pure-bash dirname, and pinned by a test with a timeout.
  • Two guards were redundant (shell ~user, shell git check) and were removed.

Evidence:

  • 61 unit cases plus 16 wrapper checks.
  • Full bstack suite 84/84; ShellCheck is clean.
  • The reader was exercised on Python 3.9.
  • Mutation: every rule caught.

Use a distinct exit status when tomllib is unavailable.

raise SystemExit("<message>") returns status 1. This conflicts with the --check status used for stale readers when the generator is invoked directly with Python 3.9 or 3.10. Return status 2 for the missing-tomllib case.

Adapt the wrapper for Python versions without tomllib.

On Python 3.9 or 3.10, doctor.sh uses the hash-only branch and does not print path registry readers are what gen_paths.py writes. The clean-fixture assertion at lines 61-62 therefore fails.

The hand-edit case at lines 125-132 also cannot detect a changed reader without the deep check. Skip that case when tomllib is unavailable. The earlier generator check must also skip instead of recording a failure.

Skip the unreadable-folder fixture when the test runs as root.

chmod 0 does not block reads for root. If the wrapper runs as root (for example in a container), the doctor can read $WS/.broomva. It then reports the shadowed asks instead of could not check ..., and expect_gap fails. Guard the fixture with an euid check.

Skip the chmod(0) permission cases when the test runs as root.

Three tests depend on chmod(0) to make a folder unreadable:

  • test_an_unreadable_new_root_is_unreadable_in_both
  • test_a_compatibility_symlink_shadows_nothing_and_an_unreadable_root_is_an_error
  • the same pattern in the shell wrapper

Root ignores directory mode bits. As root, bp.repo_path("preauth", root) raises no OSError, the shell reader does not return 3, and bp.main(["shadowed", ...]) returns 1, not 3. The wrapper requires a bare OK verdict with no skips, so the whole suite fails as root. Add a root guard. If skips must stay at zero, make the wrapper accept skips only for this reason.

Round 3 at 847f3ed: A FAIL, B and C FAIL with continuation verdicts (round 4
earned). Every finding reproduced:
- containment, not provenance: .broomva/ and .control/ must be real folders,
  an entry must not be a symlink, a committed symlink (120000) in a tree is
  refused (LayoutError / exit 3). Closes the folder-symlink route (A BLOCKER,
  B R3-M1, C R3-M1) and C's prediction (writes outside the repo). UnsafePath
  (owner files only) removed: a reader cannot know who wrote a file
  (`cp -r ../evil .broomva`); that is the gates' and Owner Signature's job.
- shell: empty HOME via id -un + validated ~user (bash 5 broke); HOME trailing
  slashes and /. normalized; relative HOME refused; workspace == HOME compared
  lexically first (paths that do not exist yet); CDPATH and `-r` roots safe;
  unreadable .control = 3; no hash tool = 3 propagated
- repo_key refuses a root that is not an existing folder
- generator: a wrong-kind table (repo = []) is a RegistryError
- tree_path no longer rewraps LayoutError

P20 round 3: FAIL (min over strata); round 4 earned

Round-2 MAJORs:

  • B: 4 of 5 fixed, and B accepts the removal of the gate helpers.
  • C: all 3 fixed.
  • A: the state collision and nesting are fixed; empty HOME is not.

Round-3 findings, each reproduced:

Finding Strata Fix
Owner files read through a symlinked folder (ln -s ../evil .broomva) or a hard link; and (C's located prediction) a symlinked .broomva sends new ledger writes outside the repo, exit 0 A-BLOCKER, B-R3-M1, C-R3-M1 The rule becomes containment for every name, not provenance for owner files. .broomva/ and .control/ must be real folders, and the entry a name resolves to must not be a symlink. Repo paths are one level deep (the generator refuses nesting), so that covers every component. A committed symlink (mode 120000) in a tree is refused the same way: LayoutError, exit 3. UnsafePath, which checked owner files only, is removed. Not claimed: that a reader can tell who wrote a file. cp -r ../evil .broomva creates plain files that read like the owner's. Owner-file integrity belongs to the gates and Owner Signature (ADR decision 2), and doctor's shadow gap reports it after the fact. A hard link is the same case: the file is in the repo, and its content is whatever was written.
Empty HOME broke the shell reader on bash 5 (Homebrew, Linux CI) A-M2, C-m2 The account home comes from id -un plus a validated ~user expansion. Tested on bash 3.2 and bash 5.
Workspace = $HOME passed when neither path existed A-M3 A lexical comparison of normalized paths first, then identity.
HOME with trailing slashes; a relative HOME A-m4, C-m7 Normalized in both readers; a relative HOME is refused.
repo = [] gave a traceback A-m5 Wrong-kind tables are a RegistryError.
Shell cd followed CDPATH and read a root named -r as an option; repo_key disagreed for roots that don't exist B ./ before a relative root; repo_key refuses a root that isn't an existing folder.
An unreadable .control/ diverged; no hash tool collapsed exit 3 into 2 C-m1, C-m3 Both now give exit 3.
A compatibility symlink .broomva -> .control gave contradictory doctor output B, C-m5 Refused as a layout error. The ADR uses no compatibility symlinks.

Not changed: the case-variant root spelling (RC vs rc) giving two keys (B-m). git reports the top level as cased on disk; documented.

Found by the tests during the fix: tree_path rewrapped LayoutError as TreeReadError, and a trailing /. defeated the shell's lexical home comparison. Both fixed.

Evidence:

  • 69 unit cases plus 16 wrapper checks.
  • Mutation: 21 of 21 round-3 rules caught.
  • The reader was exercised on Python 3.9.

…oots, fresh-machine keys (BRO-3216)

Round 4 at 8b65cd8: A FAIL, B and C FAIL with continuation verdicts (round 5
earned). Every finding reproduced:
- owner-written regular files must have one link (A BLOCKER: a hard link let
  an ungoverned write change the policy past lexical gates)
- every return passes _entry (lstat): a dangling symlink is never returned
  (B/C R4-M1: Python wrote outside the repo); _lstat raises on EACCES
  (B's prediction: 3.12+ is_symlink() hides it); unsearchable or non-folder
  roots refused
- trees: .broomva/.control must be 040000; registry entries 040000/100644/
  100755 (no committed symlink, no gitlink)
- repo_key keys a missing root as realpath does (C R4-M2: doctor false gap on
  CI; C's prediction: workspace.audit on a fresh machine); `..` roots refused
- generator: repo paths are one component deep
- shell: _broomva_normpath (`..` collapses as Python normpath), bad HOME is 2
  everywhere, account names must start with a letter or _, `@` allowed
- moved() refuses symlinked entries; TOCTOU and machine-scope limits stated

87 unit cases + 18 wrapper checks; mutation 24/25 (1 equivalent); full
suite 84/84; shellcheck clean.

P20 round 4: FAIL (min over strata); round 5 earned

Round-3 findings: B and C confirm the folder-symlink fix (containment for every name) and C's round-3 prediction. B accepts the containment-not-provenance argument. A accepted the empty-HOME, workspace = HOME, trailing-slash and repo = [] fixes.

Round-4 findings, each reproduced:

Finding Strata Fix
A hard link to an owner file lets a write to an ungoverned in-repo name change the policy, past every lexical gate; git can't record the alias A-BLOCKER An owner-written regular file must have a single link (st_nlink; in shell, a portable ls -ld parse), else LayoutError. B argued a link adds nothing over a plain copy. It does add a persistent alias to a legitimately written file, so the check stays. The folder-move routes B names (mv prepared/ .broomva) are step-2 gate work, recorded on BRO-3216.
Python returned a dangling symlink from its last fallback, and an append wrote outside the repo (repo, owner and state names) B-R4-M1, C-R4-M1 Every return goes through _entry, which uses lstat: a dangling link is refused.
(B's prediction) Python 3.12+ is_symlink() answers False when lstat is denied B _lstat raises on anything but "not there". _contained refuses an unsearchable root. Tested on 3.9 and 3.14.
A .broomva committed as a symlink (mode 120000) read as absent, not unsafe A-M _tree_contained: in a tree, .broomva and .control must be folders (040000).
A gitlink (160000) at a registry path was accepted C-m3 Tree entries at registry paths must be 040000, 100644 or 100755.
The generator allowed a single nested repo path (governance/policy.yaml), which defeats the containment proof A-M Repo and repo_state paths are one component deep.
Shell didn't collapse .. ($HOME/x/.. passed as the workspace) A-M, B _broomva_normpath (pure bash) on every env root and HOME; Python normpaths them too, so both agree.
A relative HOME turned into "no repo" (1) in shell; machine_path work dropped its legacy silently A-M, B Both are a usage error (2).
moved() looked past a symlinked entry A-m moved() checks each entry it finds.
A .broomva that is a regular file; an unreadable .control; error order with a relative BROOMVA_HOME; repo_root under an unsearchable folder B All aligned: non-folder roots are refused; containment is checked before the state dir; Python's walk uses os.path.isdir/islink, as the shell does.
Doctor gave a false gap on a CI layout: repo_key refused a missing root, so workspace.audit failed while workspace.asks worked (C's located prediction for the API) C-R4-M2 Fixed in repo_key, not in doctor. A missing root keys as realpath does: the physical nearest ancestor plus the rest, the same key before and after the folder exists. A clean CI-layout doctor fixture was added.
A root with .. escaped (<repo>/lnk/..) C-m2 Refused in both readers; a git top level never has one.
Account names 0, 1 and - reached eval and expanded the directory stack; @ names; a uid with no passwd entry C-m1, B A leading letter or _; @ is allowed; KeyError becomes ValueError. Two tests cover the guard.
TOCTOU; machine scope has no containment C-m4, C-m5 Both stated in the module header.

Evidence:

  • 87 unit cases plus 18 wrapper checks.
  • Mutation: 24 of 25 caught. The survivor (_lstat swallowing EACCES) is equivalent, because _contained and _exists refuse the same case first.
  • Round 4's own tests run on Python 3.9 and 3.14.

…) checks every entry (BRO-3216)

Round 5 at 6994fcc: B PASS (8/8/8), C PASS (8/7/8), A FAIL without a
continuation verdict. Fixes for every finding:
- repo_key refuses a missing root under a dangling symlinked ancestor in both
  readers (A, observed: the keys differed)
- a leading `//` collapses in both readers (A, observed)
- Python applies the shell's account-name rule to pw_name (A)
- an entry that is neither a regular file nor a folder is refused (FIFO)
- moved() checks every entry, owner link counts included, in both readers
- every external tool is called through `command`: a caller's ls/git/env/id
  function is never used (C: a fake ls could pass a linked owner file)
- an unsearchable repo root is 3 in the shell too
- the single-link rule's limits stated (transient links, volume-wide DoS,
  hooks/ contents)

95 unit cases + 18 wrapper checks; 12/12 round-5 mutants caught; full suite
84/84; shellcheck clean.

P20 round 5: FAIL on Stratum A alone (B and C PASS); round 6 needs the owner

Reviewed head: 6994fcc. Fixes: eac99b1.

Stratum Verdict Scores
A, Codex gpt-5.6-terra FAIL (no continuation) correctness 4 · invariants 4 · tests 3
B, Claude PASS correctness 8 · invariants 8 · tests 8
C, Claude PASS correctness 8 · security 7 · devex 8

Round-4 findings:

  • B and C: all fixed. They checked on Python 3.9 and 3.14 and bash 3.2 and 5; C ran hostile-name and locale probes of the ls -ld parse.
  • A: all fixed, except that moved() lacked the link check.

Round-5 findings. Each one is fixed in the next commit, and each is a test case:

Finding Strata Fix
A missing root under a dangling symlinked ancestor got different keys in the two readers (observed) A-MAJOR, B-m, C-m4 Both refuse it: the path it names doesn't exist.
A leading //: Python kept it, shell collapsed it (observed) A-MAJOR, C-m5 Both collapse it; on macOS and Linux // is the root.
An empty HOME on an account named 0, 1 or -: Python didn't apply the shell's account-name rule (from the code) A-MAJOR Python applies the same rule to pw_name.
A FIFO, socket or device at a registry path A-m, B-m Refused: an entry is a regular file or a folder.
moved() skipped the single-link check; the shell's moved() stopped at the first entry, hiding a later symlink A-m, B-m Every entry is checked, owner link counts included, in both readers.
A caller's shell function named ls, git, env or id replaced the library's tools; a fake ls could pass a linked owner file C-m2 Every external tool is called through command; tested with a function ls and a function id.
An unsearchable repo root (chmod 000): Python 3, shell 0 C-m3 The shell checks the repo root too; both give 3.
The single-link rule's limits C-m1 Stated in the header: it sees only a link that still exists, any process on the volume (and hard-linking backup tools) can trip it, and files inside hooks/ aren't counted.

Evidence:

  • 95 unit cases plus 18 wrapper checks.
  • Mutation: 12 of 12 round-5 rules caught.
  • The round-4 and round-5 cases run on Python 3.9.

Budget: none of the round-5 verdicts is a continuation with a located prediction. B and C passed; A failed without one. So round 6 is the owner's decision.

Owner decision (2026-10-20, via AskUserQuestion): merge eac99b1 now. This is an explicit override of 'never merge over a failed stratum'.

Round 5: B PASS (8/8/8), C PASS (8/7/8). Stratum A failed on parity edge cases that B and C rate MINOR.

All of A's findings, and every B and C MINOR, are fixed in eac99b1 and covered by tests:

  • 95 unit cases;
  • 12 of 12 round-5 mutants caught;
  • full suite 84/84.

No reviewer has seen eac99b1 itself. The owner authorized merging on that basis.
