OpenCore Bootlinuxer

Install OpenCore as a graphical bootloader on Linux (UEFI + GRUB)

by BecabDev - made with <3 in Cannes

image

Version 1.1.0

Fixed

  • SMBIOS: the booted OS now sees the machine’s real model, serial and UUID instead of Acidanthera iMac19,1. Existing config.plist files are patched automatically at startup (a .bak copy is kept).
  • Mouse in the picker: PointerSupport is now written to UEFI/Input instead of UEFI/AppleInput, where OpenCore ignored it.
  • Stale GRUB copies: grubx64.efi copies in the ESP could drift from the distribution’s GRUB after an update. Use the new resync (below) to fix this.
  • Updating OpenCore twice in one session no longer hangs on an unzip overwrite prompt.
  • Safer file operations: entries are staged and swapped atomically, and EFI/BOOT is restored without ever being left empty.
  • Settings and menu: the empty resolution value in Settings is fixed, the 0 key now quits as labeled, and an invalid locale no longer crashes the UI.
  • Messages: many French and English typos are corrected.

Added

  • Resync GRUB (menu 5): refreshes the copied GRUB binary and stub config without touching your layout. The main menu warns when GRUB has changed, and the status screen shows the sync state.
  • Automatic sync (Tools menu): a systemd .path unit runs the resync whenever the distribution updates GRUB. It is removed cleanly on uninstall.
  • Tools menu: manual ESP backup (.tar.gz) and a diagnostic report saved to /root, which includes the SMBIOS values Linux sees.
  • New settings: graphical (OpenCanopy) or text picker, and an optional UEFI Shell (OpenShell) entry. For existing installs, rerun option 1 once to copy OpenShell.efi.
  • CLI: --resync (no UI), --version, --help.
  • Lock: a lock prevents two instances from editing the config at the same time.
  • New config defaults: DisableWatchDog is enabled and the resolution is written explicitly as Max.

Upgrade notes Run the script once, then reboot, so the SMBIOS and mouse fixes apply to your existing config.plist. Back up your ESP first (Tools menu), since this version has not been tested on real UEFI hardware.

Version 1.0.0

  • initial release

Features

  • installs or updates the latest OpenCore release with the OpenCanopy gui
  • imports grub entries into the OpenCore picker (hide, reorder, group in a subfolder, change logos, live preview)
  • Grub hook so the entry picked in OpenCore boots directly
  • Customization : timeout, picker, theme, mouse, resolution, UI scale
  • Esp backup and full, verified uninstall (restores boot order, EFI BOOT, NVRAM)
  • i18n : english and french

Requirements

  • Linux booted in UEFI mode, with grub (grubx64.efi on the ESP)
  • Root access and Python3 with curses
  • Secure Boot disabled in the firmware

Usage

git clone https://github.com/becabdev/opencore-bootlinuxer bootlinuxer
cd bootlinuxer
chmod +x opencore-bootlinuxer.sh
sudo ./opencore-bootlinuxer.sh

Notes

  • backups and state are stored in /var/lib/opencore-bootlinuxer
  • System detected automatically OpenCore (likes Windows) cant be edited from the preview
  • systemd boot is not supported (grub only, but will be supported in the future).
  • As always, there is a risk that it may cause your computer not to boot so keep a fresh copy of your distro installer on a usb stick
  • Have fun !
