Summary

Mobile LAN PUT applies the same activation through both shared inbound registration and the compatibility announcement. Both publish an active-register change, so each SSE subscriber receives two updates and pulls the document twice.

  • Assign an explicit InboundActivationOwner: compatibility announcement owns LAN activation when wired; ordinary P2P inbound and active pull retain inbound registration.
  • Suppress watcher recapture for LAN resurfaces already propagated by the compatibility flow. Preserve A → B → A and deliberate same-content reactivation without content/time-window filtering.
  • Keep SSE wire format, authentication, encrypted persistence, and ordinary OS capture behavior unchanged. Existing test inputs gain the required field; the resurface mock now requires the explicit RemotePush contract while retaining exactly one write and one announcement. No new unit tests.

A subsequent full CI run also exposed an independent UniFFI concurrent-shutdown race: a second closer could remove the lifecycle sender after the first claimed shutdown ownership but before it cloned that sender. Claim ownership and retain the sender under the existing channel mutex; preserve channel-close fallback, deadlines, retry and cached worker errors. Existing lifecycle assertions are unchanged.

Post-apply propagation also precedes staged-file cleanup: a cleanup error still returns to the caller, while accepted content completes its activation, announcement and transfer finalization. This prevents the sole Caller owner from being bypassed by a cleanup failure.

Companion Desktop regression: UniClipboard/UniClipboard#1961 (draft). Desktop's official Engine pin remains unchanged until an immutable merged Engine source is available.

Validation

Measured against Engine 416fcca93ea6658b4e5918bafd464c6f850a17bc and this exact fix on Desktop baseline 329d39aa21f38c9da862970b6f5682f205d261fb:

  • Real isolated headless daemon → LAN PUT → two SSE subscribers → authenticated document GET: two updates become one per activation; total GETs 19 → 11. Includes different content, A → B → A, same-content reactivation, initial hello and reconnect.
  • Real macOS daemon/watcher on a private named NSPasteboard: native text, file, PNG and actual B → history-restore A each retain one update. LAN text/repeat/file/image each change from two updates to one; document contentId matches events and file bytes match synthetic input exactly.
  • Existing Engine admission::completed_admission_survives_restart_and_allows_transfer E2E passes: pairing, receiver restart, SendText and exact persisted readback. Host clipboard is a test double; Engine/storage/Iroh are real.
  • Workspace/all-targets check, fmt, Rust style, repository preflight and diff checks passed on the fixed source.
  • Real daemon staging deletion failure on an owned read-only directory: HTTP 500 is preserved; missing activation on 2496f35 becomes exactly one update on 85f0eb7. The other 12 native/LAN scenarios remain unchanged; 28 existing inbound tests and fmt/style/repository checks pass.
  • UniFFI public contract: 30 passed; existing shutdown tests: 6 passed; existing worker-join tests: 4 passed; fmt/style/repository checks passed after the concurrent-shutdown fix.
  • Two other existing E2Es failed: copied-clipboard trace linkage is missing clipboard_receive after storage/write/shutdown checks; automatic cold start did not bring the peer online within 92 seconds. Both existing tests fail the same assertions on the original 416fcca baseline; neither is recorded as passed.
  • Isolated two-process P2P text and PNG transfer: exact byte-digest readback and one active event per peer, using the existing connectivity host and real Engine/storage/Iroh. Host clipboard writes are a test double.
  • Final CI for head 8f7e77a: PR Check and both Windows targets passed on temporary merge f035c98 (base cc98720). Workspace: 4171 passed, 21 skipped. Existing isolated-network E02 verifies exact text in four directions across three synthetic Engine hosts and exact file bytes in two directions; cleanup is confirmed. Coverage and the separate network-recovery job were skipped. Latest CodeRabbit review is rate limited.
  • Local capture/restore P2P file readback timed out; local three-peer pairing did not complete. Multi-peer SSE convergence, native P2P echoes, Windows/Linux native clipboard and announcement-free runtime acceptance remain unverified.
  • Latest upstream integration tree is not runtime-tested; read-only merge-tree reports no conflicts.

Evidence boundary

The user's original “desktop OS text copy produces two SSE updates” was not reproduced by private native capture. The physical remote Desktop/Engine revisions remain unknown. This PR fixes the independently reproduced LAN PUT path; it does not establish the physical incident's root cause. Server timestamps describe activation time, and uncalibrated phone/server clocks cannot establish one-way latency.

Separate existing findings remain out of scope: best-effort new-content OS writes are not fully coupled to announcement success; File metadata hash differs from downloaded file SHA-256 on both compared versions. No auth-cache implementation or release is included. Docs-site, telemetry and tracing reviews found no required additions.

Inbound apply requests now specify who owns activation registration. The shared apply use case skips active-register advancement for caller-owned requests. Mobile LAN selects the write intent and activation owner based on whether the activation-announce port is configured. UniFFI shutdown requests coordinate pending state and sender access under a lifecycle-command lock.

Changes

Inbound activation ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Activation ownership contract
crates/uc-application/src/clipboard/sync/apply_inbound/mod.rs, crates/uc-application/src/clipboard/inbound/*, crates/uc-application/src/clipboard/active/mod.rs, crates/uc-application/src/clipboard/sync/apply_inbound/tests.rs, crates/uc-application/src/facade/mod.rs
ApplyInboundInput and InboundClipboardApplyInput now carry an activation owner. Existing inbound entry points and test inputs use Inbound, and the facade re-exports the owner type.
Owner-gated register advancement
crates/uc-application/src/clipboard/sync/apply_inbound/usecase.rs
Both active-register advancement paths pass the activation owner. The use case skips advancement for Caller.
Mobile LAN owner and intent selection
compatibility/uc-mobile-lan/src/usecases/apply_incoming.rs, docs/exec-plans/active/mobile-lan-activation-owner.md
When an activation-announce port is configured, mobile LAN uses RemotePush and Caller. Otherwise, it uses LocalRestore and Inbound. The test expectation and execution plan reflect this behavior.

UniFFI shutdown coordination

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shutdown request coordination
bindings/uc-engine-uniffi/src/runtime/shutdown.rs
shutdown_inner delegates duplicate-request detection to request_shutdown. That method claims shutdown_pending and clones the sender while holding the lifecycle-command lock. It returns Ok(false) when another shutdown request is pending and AlreadyStopped when the sender is absent.

A staged-file cleanup failure can leave successfully applied clipboard content unannounced to paired devices. The trigger is limited, but the skipped propagation should be fixed before merge.

🟡 Minor · Run activation propagation before returning staged-file cleanup… · apply_incoming.rs:948-967

compatibility/uc-mobile-lan/src/usecases/apply_incoming.rs:948-967
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Run activation propagation before returning staged-file cleanup errors.

discard_staged_file(...).await? runs before all post-apply effects. When the announcement port is configured, InboundActivationOwner::Caller skips inbound register advancement. Therefore, a cleanup error after a successful apply can leave the active register unchanged and suppress the synced event, peer fan-out, activation announcement, and transfer finalization.

Store the cleanup error, run the post-apply effects, then return the stored error.

Add a register-transition assertion to the resurface test.

The test checks one RemotePush write and one recorded announce_new call. RecordingAnnounce only records the call, so the test does not detect inbound application advancing the active register in addition to the compatibility announcement. Add a focused assertion that the configured-announcement path performs exactly one register/fan-out transition.
