test(seo): add a deployed sitemap contract checker - #1471
Add pnpm sitemap:check --sitemap <URL> to verify the deployed sitemap contract requested in #1153. The checker requires HTTP 200 without redirects, one matching canonical link, indexable robots directives, and no error headings or disallowed paths. It uses installed Cheerio and native fetch, with four concurrent requests and bounded timeouts. Preview origins and explicitly labeled partial checks are supported.
The checker is available for release verification, with regression tests in the ordinary unit suite. It is not yet a mandatory deployment gate while #1153 still has known failures. No new dependency or deployed runtime behavior is introduced.
Validation: focused tests cover success and negative controls for redirects, missing/duplicate/mismatched canonical links, robots directives, placeholders and private/artifact paths. An actual local HTTP/CLI fixture passed a healthy page, failed a redirect, and confirmed the redirect destination was never requested. A 12-entry production sample found one failure, the existing /showcase 307; it did not verify the entire sitemap. Normal hooks passed formatting, TypeScript, lint, 690 unit tests, 2,278 chat tests and 20 desktop tests, with 5, 6 and 1 skipped respectively.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a sitemap check command that reports pages with unsuccessful responses, invalid canonical or indexing settings, disallowed paths, or error-page content. Checks can target a preview site or a subset of sitemap URLs.
Bug Fixes
Sitemap checks now exclude documentation paths with README files and extensions, including README.md and README.mdx.
Documentation
Added instructions for checking production and preview sitemaps, running partial checks, and understanding the results. Checks are read-only and are not yet a required deployment gate.

Summary
URL extraction and page validation scripts/check-sitemap.ts, tests/sitemap-contract.test.ts
Adds sitemap URL extraction and page checks for status codes, canonical links, indexing directives, specified headings, and disallowed paths. Tests cover extraction and these checks.
Adds CLI arguments, sitemap fetching, batches of four page checks, optional base-URL remapping and limit, and failure reporting. Adds the package script and documents usage.
TanStack/tanstack.com#1470: The PR filters README and other documentation artifacts from sitemap entries; this change adds README filename exclusions and checks for disallowed sitemap paths.
TanStack/tanstack.com#1469: The checker rejects redirects and compares each page’s canonical URL with its sitemap URL.
TanStack/tanstack.com#1478: The checker validates sitemap paths against the documentation-path contract.

Review comments at @scripts/check-sitemap.ts:
- Line 109: Move URL construction for each sitemap entry into the per-entry try
block in the checkSitemap flow, so an invalid or empty URL is reported as that
entry’s failure and does not reject Promise.all or prevent the remaining results
and summary.
- Line 28: Scope the canonical-link selection in the `canonical` assignment to
the document head so a link in the body cannot satisfy the sitemap check.
Preserve the existing canonical matching and validation behavior for links found
in the head.
- Around line 19-20: Update the disallowed-path check in the sitemap checker to
reject README filenames with extensions, including nested paths such as
/db/latest/docs/README.md, while preserving the existing README-segment checks;
add coverage for README filenames with extensions to the path tests.

Fixed the three checker gaps in 30bbce0, including the README filename rule in the sitemap generator.
AI review notes:
Independently confirmed that a body-only canonical could pass, README.md was allowed, and an empty location aborted the batch. Regression tests now cover the first two. A real local HTTP/CLI fixture confirms an empty location fails while the healthy sibling is still checked and the complete summary is printed. Redirects still fail without being followed.
Normal commit hooks passed formatting, TypeScript, lint and the unit, chat and desktop suites. This is checker validation, not a claim that every production sitemap URL passes.
Both checker edge cases are fixed, so an empty preview URL cannot silently check production and image-preview restrictions do not fail an indexable page.
AI review notes:
Pushed 3e08577e9f6fe4614825c56ebe2f78f6e5ab213d. The isolated HTTP/CLI fixture showed the old empty-URL behavior fetching the default origin and passing; the fixed version exits before any request. The robots regression passes with the fix and fails without it. Google documents max-image-preview:none as disabling image previews, separately from none, which blocks indexing: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots-meta-tag
Five focused tests, full pnpm test, and normal commit hooks passed: 700 unit tests, 2,278 chat tests and 20 desktop tests, with existing skips. Fresh CI is pending. This does not claim the full production sitemap passes.
