Problem

After a sleep/resume, a USB hiccup or a stale earlier page, an EGG mouse (seen on an OP1 8K, 3367:1964) rejected every write with Failed to write the feature report. The app showed "Could not reconnect the mouse" until the mouse was physically replugged.

Change

  • OP1: the 0xa1 command write and the whole-config store now go through sendFeatureRecovering, which closes the device, reopens it and retries once.
  • OP1we: sendReportRecovering does the same for the command channel, then re-binds the notify listener.
  • A second failure is surfaced as before.

Testing

  • tsx --test src/drivers/endgame/*.test.ts: 33 pass (3 new: stale handle recovers, persistent failure still throws, OP1we recovery order).
  • tsc --noEmit clean.
  • Not verified on real hardware. The stale-handle cause is inferred from replugging fixing it. This cannot recover a mouse that is locked up at the firmware level.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved reliability of device communication by reopening stale HID connections and retrying failed report writes once. If the retry fails, the error is returned.

…write fails

A handle left stale by sleep/resume, a USB hiccup or an earlier page rejects
every write with "Failed to write the feature report" until the mouse is
replugged, so reconnecting kept failing. The OP1 command and config writes and
the OP1we command write now close the device, reopen it and retry once before
surfacing the error.

📝 Walkthrough

The OP1 and Egg WE HID clients now recover from failed feature-report writes by reopening the device and retrying once. Tests cover successful recovery for both clients and retry failure for OP1.

Changes: HID report recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
OP1 report recovery
src/drivers/endgame/egg-op1-hid.ts, src/drivers/endgame/egg-op1-hid.test.ts
Configuration and command writes use a helper that closes and reopens the device before one retry. Tests cover successful recovery and an error when the retry fails.
Egg WE command recovery
src/drivers/endgame/egg-we-hid.ts, src/drivers/endgame/egg-we-protocol.test.ts
Command writes use a helper that closes and reopens the client, reattaches the input-report listener, and retries once. A test verifies successful recovery.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8f2c7

A slow device reopen can make a successful Egg WE retry appear to fail. Preserve the response window during recovery before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8f2c7

Recovery remains limited to previously authorized mice. However, an OP1we retry can outlive connection closure or the response deadline and may apply a setting without tracking its result. Real-device recovery has not been verified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: OP1we recovery is not tied to transaction lifetime. Timeout or close can clear the response waiter while sendReportRecovering continues reopening the device and issuing its retry. For EEPROM writes, this creates a possible late setting change without an active response owner. The previous implementation did not initiate another send after the initial send failed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is to existing authorized mouse connections and the configuration operations already available through these clients. The supplied cross-file matches do not establish propagation into other vendors' drivers or shared authorization controls.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Recovery preserves the existing bound-device authority boundary. On the normal initialized WE path, open uses stored channels; it does not refresh the authorized-device pool. This limits authority expansion but does not establish that reopening the same object repairs every stale-handle condition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Repeating the same setting payload and verifying it afterward limits isolated duplicate-write impact. Those controls do not restore transaction ownership if the response deadline expires or close clears the waiter while recovery is awaiting reopen.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Tie recovery to a transaction and connection generation, invalidated by timeout, supersession, and close. Check that ownership after each recovery await and before resending so terminal states cannot initiate additional device writes.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Restart the response timeout after recovery.

transact starts its 900 ms response timer before this call. If closing and reopening the command channel consumes the remaining time, the timer clears responseWaiter before the retry sends. The retried write can succeed, but transact still rejects and ignores its response. Start a fresh response window for the retry, and test recovery through transact rather than only through the send helper.
