The desktop tracks protocol main as a git dependency (package.json), but npm ci installs the lockfile pin — new drivers and catalog entries (e.g. the G-Wolves additions in mouse-protocol#203) sit unreleased here until someone bumps by hand.

This adds a daily 09:00 UTC job that floats the pin to latest protocol main, typechecks against the new .d.ts, and opens/refreshes a chore/bump-protocol PR when it moved. Releases stay reproducible: release.yml keeps building via npm ci.

Verified locally: the float step advances the pin (f780d0d → bc19eed) and the workflow YAML parses.

Two heads-ups, both pre-existing and unrelated to this change:

  • Pristine main currently fails npx tsc --noEmit (takeStreamDeckCycle imported by use-mouse-connection.ts:33 but not exported from lib/stream-overlay.ts, plus unresolvable @openmouse/keyboard-protocol subpaths outside a full sibling checkout). The job is deliberately fail-safe: it stops at the gate instead of opening a bump PR until main typechecks clean.
  • The first bump also normalizes the git spec in package.json (https://... → github:..., cosmetic); the job commits package.json alongside the lockfile so npm ci stays in sync.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Added automated checks for updates to the protocol package. When an update is detected and passes type checks, a pull request is prepared for review. Failed type checks stop the process before a pull request is created.

The desktop tracks protocol main as a git dependency, but npm ci
installs the lockfile pin — so new drivers sat unreleased here until
someone bumped by hand. A daily job now floats the pin to latest
main, typechecks against it, and opens/refreshes a bump PR when it
moved. Releases stay reproducible (release.yml still uses npm ci).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The new workflow runs daily at 09:00 UTC or by manual dispatch. It compares the protocol revision in the lockfile with the latest revision, runs TypeScript typechecking, and creates or updates a pull request when the revision changes.

The workflow runs daily at 09:00 UTC or by manual dispatch. It sets up Node.js, records the lockfile revision, installs the latest protocol revision, and reports whether the revision changed.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 5227b

The new daily protocol-bump workflow is malformed and will be rejected by GitHub Actions. Neither the scheduled run nor manual dispatch can execute. Even after the indentation is fixed, the job lacks the sibling keyboard-protocol checkout it needs to install and typecheck, so it would never open a bump PR. Releases are unaffected, but the automation this PR adds does not work as merged.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5227b

The proposed automation combines external dependency installation with repository write permissions. However, the workflow currently fails GitHub Actions schema validation, preventing its execution at the reviewed revision. Dependency-script policy and repository protections remain unverified, so the design cannot yet be considered fully assessed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — If the workflow becomes valid and newly fetched dependency lifecycle code executes with access to persisted checkout credentials, control of that upstream code could cross into repository contents and pull-request authority. Effective branch protections may constrain this scope; organization-wide authority or release credentials are not established by the inspected configuration.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment has no retained findings and defers the privileged-install candidate pending effective npm and lifecycle-script policy evidence. Exact-head schema rejection blocks the proposed attack path before runner execution. This resolves present workflow reachability, but does not establish safe dependency execution after the workflow is corrected.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The configured entrypoints are schedule and manual dispatch, not an untrusted pull-request event. The intended typecheck gate stops subsequent branch and PR operations on failure, and the script does not automatically merge the PR. That gate occurs after installation and therefore is not an explicit control against installation-time code execution.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — For a future valid workflow, the declared shared-state transition is not serialized or transactional: checkout has no explicit main ref, the update branch is force-pushed before PR discovery, and no concurrency group is defined. Overlapping runs could overwrite update provenance; interruption after push could leave branch state without a completed PR operation. These are conditional ownership and recovery properties, not currently executing failure paths.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate dependency resolution and validation from repository writing: use a read-only validation context without persisted write credentials, explicitly control lifecycle-script execution, and give a separate writer narrowly scoped validated update inputs.
  • proposed — Before enabling the lifecycle, explicitly anchor checkout to main, serialize ownership of the update branch, and use guarded branch updates with recoverable PR discovery so retries cannot silently replace a newer validated pin.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Provide the local keyboard-protocol dependency before installing.

The manifest specifies @openmouse/keyboard-protocol as file:../keyboard-protocol, but this job checks out only the desktop repository. On a fresh runner, the sibling path is absent. npm install cannot supply that local dependency, and the typecheck cannot resolve its subpaths. Check out both repositories in a layout that preserves the relative path, or replace the local dependency with a resolvable package spec. npm treats file: entries as local paths and installs dependencies declared by the manifest. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔴 Critical | ⚡ Quick win

Indent the PR body inside the run block.

Line 80 starts at the YAML document level. It therefore ends the shell block and becomes an invalid workflow key. The workflow cannot load, so neither the scheduled job nor manual dispatch can run. Indent this line to match the other shell lines. The supplied actionlint result confirms the parse error.
