Purpose

The TUI's optional Vim mode (toggle with /vim) supported dw and dd but not their "change" versions cw and cc, which delete and then switch to insert mode.

Fixes

Fixes #425

Approach

In packages/tui/src/vim-mode.ts, add c as a pending key following the existing d/f pattern:

  • cw deletes the word forward (editor.deleteWordForward()) then enters insert mode.
  • cc clears the current line's text and enters insert mode. Unlike dd (which removes the whole line including its newline), cc keeps an empty line to type on, so it uses a new LineEditor.clearCurrentLine() that removes only the line's text and leaves the cursor at its start.
  • c followed by any other key cancels without editing, matching how d behaves today.

No compatibility or security impact; the change is confined to the Vim command layer and one new editor method.

How was this tested?

  • pnpm --filter @axl/tui test — 286 pass, 0 fail.
  • New tests: cw deletes forward one word and leaves insert mode; cc empties the current line, keeps the other lines, and leaves insert mode; c + another key cancels without editing.
  • Regression check: reverting the vim-mode.ts/editor.ts changes makes the cw and cc tests fail (2 fail); restoring them makes all pass.
  • pnpm --filter @axl/tui typecheck clean; biome check on the three changed files clean.

Learning

cc could not reuse deleteCurrentLine() because that removes the newline too; a dedicated clearCurrentLine() (kill from lineStart to lineEnd) is the minimal correct primitive.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Vim-style cw to delete the word ahead and enter insert mode.
    • Added Vim-style cc to clear the current line while preserving its newline, then enter insert mode.
    • Unsupported keys after c leave the text unchanged and return to normal mode.

Add c as a pending key in the Vim mode controller. cw deletes the word
forward and enters insert mode; cc clears the current line's text (keeping
the line) and enters insert mode. c followed by any other key cancels
without editing, matching how d behaves. Add LineEditor.clearCurrentLine
for the cc case. Add tests for all three behaviors.

📝 Walkthrough

Vim mode now supports cw to delete a word forward and cc to clear the current line. Both commands enter insert mode. Tests cover both commands and unsupported keys after c.

Changes: Vim change commands

Layer / File(s) Summary
Clear current line text
packages/tui/src/editor.ts
LineEditor.clearCurrentLine() removes non-empty line text through the kill-ring operation. It preserves the line and its newline structure, and does nothing when the line is empty.
Handle Vim change commands
packages/tui/src/vim-mode.ts, packages/tui/test/productivity.test.ts
Vim mode handles cw by deleting a word forward and cc by clearing the current line. Both commands enter insert mode. Tests also check that an unsupported key after c leaves the text unchanged and Vim mode in normal mode.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b12b3

The new cw command removes the space after the changed word, so replacement text can run into the next word. This is limited to Vim cw; the PR is otherwise low risk.

official Vim help cw change word dw whitespace behavior

💡 Result:

Vim’s official help documents the difference:

- **`cw`** on a word changes only through the end of that word; it **doesn’t include following whitespace**.
- **`dw`** uses the `w` motion, which normally reaches the next word, so it can delete the intervening whitespace too.
- To change a word *and* its following whitespace, Vim help suggests `caw` or the mapping `:map cw dwi`.

That’s the normal Vim behavior; the help notes you can use `'cpoptions'`’s `w` flag for Vi-compatible behavior. ([vimhelp.org](https://vimhelp.org/change.txt.html))

Preserve the separator in cw.

When cw runs at the start of "foo bar", deleteWordForward() deletes "foo " because it advances across non-word characters after the word. Vim's cw changes only the current word. The current test accepts the incorrect result and should retain the leading space before "bar".
