Dev Engineer Review

  • The change adds per-layer KV-cache specifications and lets eligible DFlash runs place target and draft layers in one KVCacheManagerV2. The executor retains separate caching when the run does not meet the unified-cache gates.
  • Layer specifications affect ownership, dtype, buffer roles, page indexing, cache views, and cost estimates. Verify these paths across mixed cache formats, KV factors, and allocation layouts.
  • Peer registration now rejects different draft-layer counts. This adds a compatibility constraint for disaggregated peers.
  • The author reports 24 comparisons. Aggregated acceptance length was unchanged in 23; one attention-data-parallel comparison changed by −0.20% with a timing-dependent concurrent client. Disaggregated acceptance length increased in all 24. The author reports exact agreement when prefill and decode use the same tensor-parallel size without attention data parallelism. Other configurations could generate different text; for identical outputs, the author reports acceptance-length agreement within about ±1%, except for mixed precision at prefill TP2/decode TP4, which differed by −1.89%.
  • The author reports that mixed-precision logs confirmed an FP8 target cache and a BF16 draft cache on every rank, with no fallback to the private draft cache. Transfer unit coverage checked two-byte draft pages when the advertised target element size was one byte.
  • The reported PR_Github #78565 job completed with state FAILURE for commit b6db612. The supplied evidence does not include the failure details. Current review severity counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified unit tests cover unified-cache selection, cache-cost estimation, mixed-layout pools and metadata, MiniMax M3 cache indexing, peer compatibility, and rank-info serialization.
  • The new Qwen3-8B DFlash disaggregated-serving test checks acceptance length and a shared-manager log marker. The test is listed in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_dgx_b200.yml.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The reported comparison matrix and targeted coverage are described, but the supplied evidence does not establish successful test execution. The reported CI job failed, and its failure details are unavailable.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • cpp/tensorrt_llm/batch_manager/kv_cache_manager_v2/config.h: Verify that the default coalescingGroup preserves existing behavior.
  • cpp/tensorrt_llm/batch_manager/kv_cache_manager_v2/storage/config.cpp: Verify that buffers coalesce only when both group and expanded size match.
  • cpp/tensorrt_llm/nanobind/batch_manager/kvCacheManagerV2.cpp: Verify that the optional coalescing_group argument and writable property match the Python stub.
  • cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/attentionOp.cpp: Verify pointer-table handling for 2D and 3D non-FP4 inputs, including mixed-format tables. The FP4 path is unchanged.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/flashinfer.py: Verify that layers with different KV factors receive separate page-index spaces.

Description

Follow-up to #20178. Integrate DFlash with the unified key-value cache manager so target and draft layers share one manager while retaining their respective cache data types.

Test Coverage

The following 24 comparisons cover tensor parallel configurations, CUDA graphs, overlap scheduling, attention data parallelism, and mixed cache precision.

All result columns report AL. Measurements come from the generation server’s /metrics, except the attention data parallelism comparisons, which use per-request statistics from a concurrent client. Both configuration columns show tensor parallel sizes; the disaggregated configuration lists prefill → decode.

The mixed cache precision runs use the following configuration. Here, bfloat16 denotes the 16-bit brain floating-point format.

Model Weights Key-value cache
Target: Qwen3-8B bfloat16 8-bit floating point
Drafter: Qwen3-8B-DFlash-b16 bfloat16 bfloat16

Only the target cache uses 8-bit floating point; target weights and activations remain bfloat16. Runtime logs confirm the intended target and draft cache types on every rank, with the drafter using the shared bfloat16 pool and no fallback to its private cache. Transfer unit coverage verifies that draft pages use two-byte elements even when the servers advertise the target cache’s one-byte element size.

Results:

  • Aggregated AL is unchanged in 23 of 24 comparisons. The attention data parallelism comparison at tensor parallel size 4 changes by −0.20%; this run uses a timing-dependent concurrent client.
  • Disaggregated AL increases in all 24 comparisons.
  • After the change, aggregated and disaggregated AL match exactly whenever prefill and decode use the same tensor parallel size without attention data parallelism.
  • Other configurations can produce different generated text. Among requests with identical output, aggregated and disaggregated AL agree within approximately ±1%, except the mixed cache precision configuration with prefill size 2 and decode size 4, where the difference is −1.89%.

PR effort8 points — Eight points reflects deep review of heterogeneous cache storage contracts across Python, C++ and attention consumers. Correctness depends on agreement among layer identities, buffer geometry, coalescing, pointer interpretation and page-index sharing. This enables existing target/draft integration rather than introducing a model architecture; no kernel implementation change is visible.
ImportanceImportant — Changes sensitive cache layout and indexing contracts: C++ coalescing gains a group discriminator, native attention accepts mixed-format pointer tables, and FlashInfer distinguishes page-index spaces by KV factor. Per-layer target/draft dtype and geometry descriptors broaden the shared cache interface.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds explicit per-layer KV-cache specifications to V2 managers and enables eligible DFlash configurations to share one manager for target and draft layers. It updates cache sizing, storage views, page indexing, DFlash binding, and disaggregated peer compatibility, with unit and integration test coverage.

Changes

Unified DFlash KV cache

Layer / File(s) Summary
Layer specifications and cache sizing
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_estimation.py
V2 managers accept per-layer ownership, layout, roles, windows, sink tokens, and reuse policies. Cache sizing and quota calculations use the supplied layer specs when present.
Per-layer storage and indexing
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/kv_cache_manager_v2.py, cpp/tensorrt_llm/batch_manager/kv_cache_manager_v2/*, cpp/tensorrt_llm/nanobind/batch_manager/kvCacheManagerV2.cpp, cpp/tensorrt_llm/thop/attentionOp.cpp, tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/*, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_kvcm2_integration.py, tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/*, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_minimax_m3_kv_transfer.py
Cache views, page tables, and indices account for per-layer dtype, roles, KV factor, and physical stride. Buffer coalescing uses both group and expanded size. Pointer-table handling accepts supported mixed-format shapes.
Unified-cache eligibility and manager construction
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py, tests/unittest/_torch/executor/kv_cache/test_dflash_unified_kv_gate.py
The executor checks DFlash configuration and KV layouts, builds target and draft layer specs for eligible cases, and passes them to the V2 manager. DFlash and DSpark draft configs also remove inherited KV-cache quantization when present.
DFlash context-cache binding
tensorrt_llm/_torch/speculative/dflash.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/speculative/interface.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/speculative/utils.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/scheduler/scheduler_v2.py, tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_disaggregated_serving.py, tests/integration/defs/accuracy/references/acceptance_length.yaml, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_dgx_b200.yml
DFlash binds context buffers and block tables to the shared manager and uses target positions to initialize unified-cache context lengths. The integration test exercises disaggregated Qwen3-8B DFlash serving and checks accuracy and acceptance length.
Disaggregated draft-layer compatibility
tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/rank_info.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/peer.py, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_rank_info.py, tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_peer.py
Rank metadata includes the number of draft layers. Peer registration rejects differing draft-layer counts.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b7570

This change lets DFlash target and draft layers share one KV cache manager. With mixed cache precision, the memory estimate can undercount the draft model's storage, which can stall or fail warmup. INT8 KV caches may be sized with the wrong data type, and some eligibility checks are not meaningfully tested. Resolve the estimation and dtype issues before merging.

Reject INT8 KV-cache unification.

When either the target or draft quant_mode has has_int8_kv_cache(), return False from _should_unify_dflash_kv_cache(). _layer_spec_dtype() currently maps INT8 to the fallback dtype, so the unified KVCacheLayerSpec can record BF16 while the runtime treats INT8 KV data as one byte. The V2 manager then sizes the layer from the wrong dtype.

Do not return None from _layer_spec_dtype(). The value becomes KVCacheLayerSpec.dtype, which must remain a valid DataType.

Share one KVCacheManagerV2 between compatible DFlash target and draft
layers in aggregated and disaggregated serving. Preserve each layer's
cache dtype and head dimension, support attention data parallelism, and
retain the separate-cache fallback for unsupported layouts.

Transfer unified draft layers with target pages, validate peer draft-layer
counts, and add unit and B200 integration coverage.

Cover the backend and compression fallback gates.

_creator always sets attn_backend="TRTLLM" and kv_cache_compression_config=None, so these tests cannot detect if _should_unify_dflash_kv_cache() stops rejecting an unsupported backend or an active KV-cache compression configuration. Add one parameterized case for each field with a non-eligible value and assert that the gate returns False.

Add a TP8 rank-local head-count case.

The TP4 case has different global and rank-local head counts, so it also passes if the gate compares global counts. Add a TP8 case with target 8 heads and draft 2 heads. Both layouts normalize to one head per rank, so disaggregated unification should succeed.

Cover mismatched heads in attention-DP disaggregated serving.

The equal-head assertion matches the test name. However, the documented 8-head target and 2-head draft are not passed to _should_unify_dflash_kv_cache(). The 2-head configuration is used only for a layout assertion. Add a gate case for the mismatched layout.

Overall LGTM: this PR lets eligible DFlash target and draft layers share one KV-cache manager while preserving their cache types. This addresses a real acceptance-length gap: draft prompt KV previously did not reach the generation worker.

I added one inline comment regarding the compatibility issue. Happy to take another review once addressed. Thanks!

IIUC each worker decides independently whether to use the shared cache. If DFlash is enabled only on the generation worker, it switches to the shared cache while the context worker keeps the old layout. The new compatibility check then prevents them from connecting.

This can also happen when both workers enable DFlash but use different TP sizes. For example, with eight target KV heads and four draft KV heads, TP4 selects separate caches while TP8 selects a shared cache.

Please enable the shared cache only when both workers can use it. Otherwise, keep the existing separate-cache behavior. Keep the compatibility check and add tests for both cases.

tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/flashinfer.py: 1

1216-1224: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a test for the KV-factor term in the FlashInfer page-index key.

This change adds get_layer_kv_factor(layer_idx) to the key that groups layers into page-index spaces. A K-only layer and a K/V layer in the same pool, at the same scale, now get separate _vswa_layer_to_pool entries. Each entry gets its own get_batch_cache_indices_flat row. None of the changed test files exercises FlashInferAttentionMetadata.__post_init__ with mixed kv_factor layers. If the key loses this term, both layers would share one index list again. The K/V layer would then read pages divided by the wrong stride, and no test would fail.

Smallest useful test: build a stub manager where two layers share a pool and a page-index scale, and get_layer_kv_factor returns 1 and 2. Assert that _vswa_layer_to_pool maps the two layers to different IDs. Also assert that a manager without get_layer_kv_factor keeps one ID for both layers. A good location is a FlashInfer metadata unit test under tests/unittest/_torch/attention/.

As per path instructions: "For each new or materially changed observable behavior, determine whether this PR adds, updates, or clearly identifies an existing test that meaningfully exercises the change."

Test coverage summary: needs follow-up.

  • Added: TestQwen3_8BDFlash::test_gsm8k_1p1d_unified_draft_kv. It runs 1 context worker and 1 generation worker at TP1, with the NIXL Python transceiver and DFlash using the TRTLLM backend.
  • Covered behavior: both workers log the shared-manager marker, GSM8K accuracy, and acceptance length against acceptance_length.yaml. Acceptance length is the signal that detects a drafter that starts from an empty prompt context.
  • Test list: the stack adds the test to tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_dgx_b200.yml.
  • Gap: the test covers only the case where both workers use the shared cache with identical layouts. No integration test runs a context and generation pair whose shared-cache decision differs, such as different TP sizes or DFlash on only one side. In that case the new num_draft_layers check rejects registration. Add one small case after the decision is made consistent across workers. For example, in this file, use context TP1 and generation TP2 with a head count that flips the decision. Assert that the workers connect and acceptance length stays above the floor.

Count unified DFlash storage pool groups during estimation.

_get_token_num_for_estimation() derives its multiplier from the target model configuration and kv_cache_config.max_attention_window. It does not inspect the unified target-and-draft layer specs.

For an FP8 target and BF16 drafter, StorageConfig uses different slot-size vectors and creates separate storage pool groups. The estimator can still return one group, so the temporary manager can underprovision the draft pool and warmup can stall or fail.

A sliding window alone does not necessarily create a separate storage pool. Distinct lifecycle groups can share one storage pool when their slot sizes, reuse policy, and sparsity match. Derive the estimation multiplier from the unified layer layout, using the same storage-group key as StorageConfig, and include both page sizes and lifecycle-specific requirements. Passing estimating_kv_cache to the builder alone does not fix the mixed-page-size case.

Update _get_token_num_for_estimation to derive its multiplier from the unified
target-and-draft layer layout using the same storage-group key as StorageConfig.
Include page sizes and lifecycle-specific requirements when counting groups, so
layers share a group when their storage requirements match even if their
attention windows differ.
