[#19820][feat] Add Apertus and Apertus 1.5 (text) to the PyTorch backend - #19735
maxwbuckley wants to merge 9 commits into
Conversation
Swiss AI's Apertus is a Llama-style dense decoder with per-head QK-norm, llama3 RoPE scaling and a non-gated MLP whose activation, xIELU, has two coefficients learned per layer. - modules/xielu.py: XIELU module. alpha_p/alpha_n stay in the checkpoint's pre-softplus form; a_p = softplus(alpha_p) and a_n = beta + softplus(alpha_n) are derived once in fp32 (cache_derived_state) and used as floats. The activation is evaluated in fp32 and rounded once to the input dtype. - models/modeling_apertus.py: ApertusForCausalLM (QKNormRoPEAttention with fuse_qk_norm_rope=False, since the fused QK-norm + RoPE kernel implements YaRN scaling but not llama3; the non-gated MLP with XIELU). - Apertus1p5ForConditionalGeneration, text input only: the same decoder under model.language_model. Its input embedding (266752 rows) also covers the discrete image/audio codes; config.vocab_size is set to the output (lm_head) vocabulary, which the executor uses to bound request token ids, and the embedding is sized by input_vocab_size. load_pretrained_config flattens the apertus1p5 text_config (not in the pinned transformers) and keeps a top-level quantization_config. - Register the architectures; add the unit test to l0_h100. - Tests: xIELU vs float64 and HF; tiny-config HF parity for prefill and four decode steps on VANILLA, FLASHINFER, TRTLLM and TRTLLM + CUDA graph, with a negative control showing the tolerance detects wrong xIELU coefficients; Apertus 1.5 checkpoint layout and config flattening; real-checkpoint greedy decoding checked token by token against HF (skipped without weights). - Pass lora_params to the MLP; adapters on up_proj/down_proj were silently ignored (attention already received them). - Apertus 1.5: quantization exclusions and per-layer quant configs use the checkpoint's module names (model.language_model.*), while the modules are model.*; add the runtime names as aliases so an excluded decoder layer is not quantized. - Reject hidden_act other than "xielu" instead of silently building xIELU. - Real-checkpoint tests: the HF reference now evaluates HF's own xIELU formula in fp32 rather than the implementation under test. The new tests fail without the corresponding fixes. Signed-off-by: Max Buckley <maxwbuckley@gmail.com>

LGTM for the most part, but I agree we should move the real checkpoint tests to A10.
We need to make sure we stage the checkpoints before we run CI on this for the first time. I'm talking with the team about how that happens.

[dpitman agent] [P1] This entry pulls the whole file into H100 pre-merge, which includes the two real-checkpoint classes (TestApertus8BInstruct, TestApertus1p5_8B). Those have two outcomes in CI, and neither is good:
- The checkpoints are not staged under CI's
LLM_MODELS_ROOT(Apertus-8B-Instruct-2509,Apertus-v1.5-8B). Neither is there today as far as I can tell. Both classes thenskipTestand the stage stays green, so the end-to-end coverage described in the PR never runs in CI. - The checkpoints are staged. Each class then loads an 8B model through the LLM API, loads it again in HF, and runs HF
generatefor 3 prompts × 64 tokens. That adds several minutes of end-to-end work to a pre-merge unit-test stage that has noTIMEOUTon this entry.
Suggested split:
- Pre-merge keeps only the tiny-config tests. Deselect the real-checkpoint classes on this line, e.g.
-k "not TestApertus8BInstruct and not TestApertus1p5_8B". - Real-checkpoint validation moves to the accuracy harness (
tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.pyplusreferences/). You already have GSM8K numbers for both checkpoints, so that is a natural fit, and it goes on a post-merge/QA list after the weights are staged. - Wherever the real-checkpoint tests end up, resolve the path with
get_checkpoint()fromtests/test_common/llm_data.pyso a missing checkpoint fails instead of skipping (see [TRTLLM-16326][test] Fail VisualGen tests on missing checkpoints/deps #19054).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
- Pre-merge now runs only the tiny-config tests, with
-k "not TestApertus8BInstruct and not TestApertus1p5_8B"(13 GPU tests are collected). - Real-checkpoint validation is in the accuracy harness:
TestApertus8BInstruct::test_auto_dtypeandTestApertus1p5_8B::test_auto_dtype(GSM8K, bf16). Both are onqa/llm_function_core.txtnext to Ministral-8B. Happy to move them to a post-merge test-db list instead if you prefer. - References were measured with the harness protocol on an RTX 5090, 3 separate processes each: 2509 Instruct 58.04 / 57.32 / 57.32 → 57.56, and v1.5 77.56 ×3 → 77.56. A full harness run of both tests then passed: 59.06 against a threshold of 54.36, and 77.33 against 74.36.
The greedy-vs-HF classes stay in the unit-test file and are now on no CI list, so they only run locally. Let me know if you'd like them on a list once the weights are staged.

[dpitman agent] [P1] (See the l0_h100.yml comment.) Skipping on a missing checkpoint lets a CI stage pass without running anything. Please use get_checkpoint(self.CHECKPOINT) from tests/test_common/llm_data.py, which raises a FileNotFoundError naming the missing path, and run these classes only on a list whose nodes have the weights staged.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done in ba58c59: setUp now uses get_checkpoint(self.CHECKPOINT). With an empty LLM_MODELS_ROOT the test now fails with FileNotFoundError: Checkpoint not found: …/Apertus-8B-Instruct-2509 instead of skipping. The only other list that sweeps unittest/_torch/modeling is l0_cpu with -m cpu_only, and these classes aren't marked, so nothing picks up the change from skip to fail.

[dpitman agent] [P2] The block header above says "Only key models in H100: llama/gemma/gpt-oss", and Hopper pre-merge capacity is tight. The tiny-config tests use VANILLA, FlashInfer, TRTLLM and TRTLLM + CUDA graph, which all run on Ampere. Comparable small-model parity tests (mistral, phi3, cohere2, nemotron_nas) are on l0_a10.yml.
Could this go there instead? One thing to confirm first: that test_quant_exclusions_use_checkpoint_names (which constructs FP8 Linear modules) builds on SM86. If it doesn't, gate that one test by SM version rather than pinning the whole file to H100.
Also: the PR reports results only on SM120. The atol/rtol of 0.05 in the HF parity test has not been exercised on whichever arch CI uses, so the first CI run is also the first check of that tolerance.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Moved to l0_a10.yml (pre-merge, next to cohere2) and removed from l0_h100.yml. On SM86: both quant tests only build the model. FP8 QDQ create_weights just allocates float8_e4m3fn tensors, and there's no forward or SM-dependent path, so I didn't add a gate. Agreed on the tolerance: it has only been run on SM120 so far, so the first A10 run will be its first check on SM86. I'll keep an eye on it.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[dpitman agent] [P2] With atol=0, rtol=0, this check depends on HF taking its Python path. XIELUActivation.forward switches to _xielu_cuda whenever the xielu wheel is importable and the input is on CUDA. That path casts alpha_p/alpha_n to x.dtype and rounds differently, so the cuda cases of this test would start failing if that wheel ever ends up in the container. The real-checkpoint test already calls _xielu_python directly; doing the same here pins the reference:
torch.testing.assert_close(out, hf_act._xielu_python(x.float()).to(dtype), atol=0, rtol=0)There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. The reference is now hf_act._xielu_python(x.float()). To check it, I replaced HF's dispatch with a stand-in extension whose output is 1 ulp off. The old hf_act(x) assertion then fails on 12 of 12554 elements, and the new one passes.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
[dpitman agent] [P2] _alias_language_model_quant_names has two branches: exclude_modules and quant_config_dict (per-layer configs, used by mixed-precision exports). Only the first is tested.
The quant_config_dict branch is the one 9124dfe changed to copy before mutating, and nothing checks that it:
- maps
model.language_model.layers.N.*keys to the runtimemodel.layers.N.*modules, or - leaves the caller's dict unmodified.
Please add a case that passes a quant_config_dict keyed by checkpoint names. It should assert that the aliased layer gets that layer's config, and that the caller's dict is unchanged afterwards.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Added TestApertus1p5::test_layer_quant_configs_use_checkpoint_names. It passes quant_config_dict keyed by checkpoint names for down_proj in layer 0 and o_proj in layer 1. Those are exact-match branches in apply_layerwise_quant_config, so they need the alias. The test checks that:
- each of those modules gets that exact config object and FP8 weights;
- the same modules in the other layer don't;
- the caller's dict is unchanged.
It fails both with the alias removed and with the in-place update from before 9124dfe. It sets skip_create_weights_in_init=True as AutoModelForCausalLM does, so weights are created after the per-layer configs are applied.

[dpitman agent] [P2] Several tests here don't need a GPU, but they currently take an H100 slot:
TestXIELU: thecpucases oftest_matches_reference, plustest_load_weights_*andtest_reference_function_matches_moduleTestApertus1p5Config, which only builds a config from a tempconfig.json
Per tests/README.md ("How to choose whether a GPU is needed"), these should be marked @pytest.mark.cpu_only. No test-list change is needed for that:
l0_cpu.ymlalready includesunittest/_torch/modelingand runs it with-m cpu_only.- GPU stages run
-m "not cpu_only"(jenkins/L0_Test.groovy:1739), so marked tests leave the H100 stage automatically.
Don't mark all of TestXIELU as one class, though. The cuda cases of test_matches_reference would then run only in the CPU stage, where they skip, and the GPU path would lose its coverage. Splitting the parameterization into a CPU-only test and a CUDA test keeps both paths covered, e.g. test_matches_reference_cpu (marked) and test_matches_reference_cuda (unmarked).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done. Marked cpu_only: TestApertus1p5Config, test_load_weights_*, test_reference_function_matches_module, and the new test_matches_reference_cpu. test_matches_reference_cuda is unmarked, as you suggested. With CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES="" and -m cpu_only, 7 tests run and pass. With -m "not cpu_only", both CUDA reference cases are still collected.

…s on CPU Addresses review feedback on the test placement: - Pre-merge runs the file on A10 instead of H100, without the two 8B real-checkpoint classes (TestApertus8BInstruct, TestApertus1p5_8B). - The real-checkpoint classes resolve their path with get_checkpoint(), so a missing checkpoint fails instead of skipping. - Tests that need no GPU are marked cpu_only: TestApertus1p5Config, the XIELU weight-loading tests and the CPU cases of the reference test, now split into test_matches_reference_cpu and _cuda. - The xIELU reference test compares against HF's _xielu_python rather than forward(), which dispatches to the optional xielu CUDA extension. - New test for the quant_config_dict branch of the Apertus 1.5 name aliasing: checkpoint-named per-layer configs reach the runtime modules and the caller's dict is unchanged. It fails with the aliasing removed and with the earlier in-place update. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Max Buckley <maxwbuckley@gmail.com>

Thanks for addressing the comments. I'm still waiting on approval for the checkpoint MR. Once that's in and the checkpoints actually clone into our scratch space, I want to try running the tests on actual A10s before we launch the whole CI flow, just as a pressure test. Sorry, I know this is a slow process, just trying to be thorough (and also making sure I have my dev environment set up for this sort of thing in the future). |

[dpitman agent] [P2] TestApertus8BInstruct and TestApertus1p5_8B are now on no CI or QA list. l0_a10 deselects them with -k, and l0_cpu only collects cpu_only tests. As a result, they only run when someone runs this file by hand. The GSM8K accuracy tests cover a different property: they catch large regressions, but not a small numerical drift that leaves the score inside the threshold. The per-token near-argmax check against HF is the only test that catches that drift on real weights.
The two checkpoints are being staged under LLM_MODELS_ROOT at the same relative paths used here (Apertus-8B-Instruct-2509, Apertus-v1.5-8B). Once they land, please pick one:
- Keep the classes: add them to a list that runs them, e.g. the
post_mergeblock ofl0_h100.ymlwith aTIMEOUT, orqa/llm_function_core.txt, which already carriesunittest/entries. Then they can't rot unnoticed. - Drop the classes: delete them and rely on the accuracy tests, so the file contains no code that never runs in CI.
This is not a merge blocker. It can go in a follow-up after the checkpoint MR lands.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Thanks @dpitman-nvda. I went with keeping the classes: in 9a75e4d both TestApertus8BInstruct and TestApertus1p5_8B are now on qa/llm_function_core.txt, next to the GSM8K accuracy tests, at the same LLM_MODELS_ROOT paths you're staging (Apertus-8B-Instruct-2509, Apertus-v1.5-8B). Happy to move them to the post_merge block of l0_h100.yml with a TIMEOUT instead if you'd prefer.
TestApertus8BInstruct and TestApertus1p5_8B were deselected from l0_a10 and not on any other list, so they only ran by hand. Add them to qa/llm_function_core.txt next to the GSM8K accuracy tests: the per-token near-argmax check against HF catches small numerical drift that stays inside the GSM8K threshold. Closes #19820.
Adds Swiss AI Apertus (
ApertusForCausalLM) and the text path of Apertus 1.5 (Apertus1p5ForConditionalGeneration) to the PyTorch backend.Apertus is a Llama-style dense decoder with per-head QK-norm, llama3 RoPE scaling, and a non-gated MLP,
down_proj(xielu(up_proj(x))). The xIELU activation (arXiv 2411.13010) has two coefficients learned per layer.What's in it
modules/xielu.py:XIELUmodule.alpha_pandalpha_nstay in the checkpoint's pre-softplus form.a_p = softplus(alpha_p)anda_n = beta + softplus(alpha_n)are constant at inference time, so they are derived once in fp32 incache_derived_state()and passed on as floats. The activation is computed in fp32 and rounded once to the input dtype.models/modeling_apertus.py:ApertusForCausalLM, built fromQKNormRoPEAttention, the non-gatedMLPwithXIELU, and the fused residual RMSNorm. Layer-norm names follow the checkpoint (attention_layernorm,feedforward_layernorm); the only weight rename ismlp.act_fn→mlp.activation.model.language_model.. Images and audio enter as discrete token ids from separate VQ tokenizers, which are not run here. As a result:lm_headhas only 131072 (output_vocab_size);config.vocab_sizeis set to the output vocabulary, because the executor bounds request token ids bylm_headrows (KV-cache profiling failed with "Token ID out of range" otherwise), and the embedding is sized byinput_vocab_size;apertus1p5config, soload_pretrained_configflattenstext_configintoApertusConfigand keeps a top-levelquantization_config, which quantized 1.5 exports use.Differences from the obvious design, and why
fuse_qk_norm_rope=False: the fused QK-norm + RoPE kernel implements YaRN scaling but not llama3 (compute_yarn_parametersreturns identity for llama3). QK-norm therefore runs unfused and RoPE is applied by the attention op. Adding llama3 scaling to the fused kernel is a possible follow-up; profiles put it at about 1–2% of step time.XIELUlives in_torch/modules/rather than in the model file, so thatMLPcan dispatch on it without importing frommodels/.Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_modeling_apertus.py(added tol0_h100):x > 0,xin(eps, 0], very negativexand exact zeros.quantization_config; that test fails without the fix) and a parity run on a 1.5-layout state dict with input ids beyond the output vocabulary.LLM_MODELS_ROOT. Greedy decoding through the LLM API; HF (with its xIELU formula evaluated in fp32) then runs over prompt plus TRT-LLM tokens, and every TRT-LLM token must be within 0.5 logits of HF's argmax. Exact sequence equality with HF bf16 was not used as the criterion because it is not sound: on Apertus 1.5 both divergences seen were near-ties (0.09 and 0.02 logits in an fp32 reference) where TRT-LLM matched the fp32 reference and HF bf16 did not.Measured locally on an RTX 5090 (SM120), on a from-source build:
test_modeling_apertus.py,test_lazy_model_zoo.py,test_architecture_allowlist.py,test_model_config.py(at5946434ec6)tests/unittest/_torch/modules/: the 130 tests that fail on SM120 fail identically on unmodifiedmain(SM 10.x-only kernels, CUTLASS MXFP8 arch support, Triton stochastic-rounding PTX); the rest pass.Not covered here: tensor parallelism, attention-DP, pipeline parallelism and speculative-decoding capture. The code follows Qwen3's patterns for these, but they need more than the single GPU I have, so they are untested.
