Reject stale entries in required_models.
This check detects only missing models. It accepts every requested model plus stale entries.
A stale entry is then staged at Line 127. hf_id_to_local_model_dir can fail if that unused model is absent from the cache.
Compare both sets. Add a regression case with one extra configured model.

The root cause reads correctly and the staging loop is the right place to fix it. Two things to settle before the waivers come off:
-
These four tests only run in the post-merge verl stage, so a default pipeline proves nothing about them. Please run that stage explicitly (
/bot run --extra-stage "DGX_B200-4_GPUs-Verl-Post-Merge-1") and link the result — the "verify fix on the same GPU type" box is checked but no run is cited. -
The commit that caused this dropped three Qwen2.5 entries (
Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct,Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct,Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct); only two are restored. If the pinned tag genuinely no longer references the VL model, say so in the PR description, since the new coverage assert is what would otherwise have to catch it — and see the inline note on why it may not.

This assert passes vacuously when the scan finds nothing. _model_ids_requested_by_verl() only matches the literal form os.path.join(model_root, "...") in *.py directly under one directory — a renamed local, an f-string, Path(model_root) / ..., a multi-component join, or a helper in a subdirectory/conftest all yield an empty set, and set() - required is empty, so the check reports success while covering zero references.
That matters because verl_config.yml now tells the next person the list is machine-checked against repo_tag. At minimum add assert requested, ... (or assert it in _setup_model_symlinks) so a stale pattern fails loudly rather than silently, and make the glob recursive (**/*.py with recursive=True).

There was a problem hiding this comment.
The regex captures only the first string component, so os.path.join(model_root, "Qwen", "Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct") yields "Qwen" — which is never in required_models (entries are full ns/name ids) and would fire the assert with a confusing message. Either match the trailing components too and re-join them, or normalize both sides before comparing.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
os.unlink raises IsADirectoryError if dst is a real directory rather than a symlink — plausible under /tmp/verl-models after a partial copy or an older run. Guard with os.path.islink(dst) and raise a message naming the path when it isn't a link, so the failure explains itself instead of surfacing as a bare OSError inside session setup.

The list this restores previously also carried Qwen/Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct. If the pinned tag's rollout tests still touch it, it will fail the same way the other two did; the coverage assert above will only catch that if the scan pattern actually matches how verl builds that path. Confirm against the d324b01 sources and either restore the entry or note in the config comment that it's deliberately unused.

Add focused tests for model staging.
_setup_model_symlinks has no direct tests for the missing model root, unmatched discovery result, missing local model, dangling-link replacement, or wrong-target replacement. Add focused cases for these paths. List each new selector in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_verl.yml.
Test coverage summary: tests/integration/defs/verl/test_verl_cases.py contains the model-staging logic and existing VERL wrapper tests. No dedicated model-staging test function is present. The existing wrapper selectors are listed in l0_verl.yml. Coverage is insufficient.

…ks for required_models in verl_config.yml is maintained by hand while repo_tag pins the verl checkout that consumes it, so the two drift independently. NVIDIA#17827 rewrote the list Qwen2.5 -> Qwen3 while repo_tag stayed at d324b01, whose rollout tests join Qwen/Qwen2.5-{0.5B,1.5B}-Instruct onto TRTLLM_TEST_MODEL_PATH_ROOT. Nothing was staged, and transformers retried the absent local path as a Hub repo id, failing with HFValidationError several minutes into the run. Restore the ids the pinned tag requests, and derive the requested set from those sources so this direction of drift is reported where it names both sides. A miss-only check cannot see it: every Qwen3 name does exist in the cache, just under a Qwen3/ prefix that the private flat {cache}/{basename} join can never address. Delegate resolution to hf_id_to_local_model_dir, which consults HF_ID_TO_LLM_MODELS_SUBDIR before the top-level probe, so prefixed entries are reachable by construction and ci_model_cache is left dead. That key also hardcoded a Jenkins-only bind mount, where llm_models_root() resolves the cache the surrounding tests already use. Compare the staged link by target rather than by existence, since a link staged against a different cache root dangles: os.path.exists is False on it, so os.symlink would raise EEXIST instead of re-pointing it. Drop the four waivers this bug owns; each case was run individually on a DGX B200 and passes. Signed-off-by: trtllm-agent <296075020+trtllm-agent@users.noreply.github.com>
