Description

SENSING camera bring-up now has two commands per environment: setup, then the same nvsipl_camera --egl-display command for a live preview. Container setup runs on the host, builds the runtime image, and opens a shell with camera and desktop access configured, including GDM authorization discovery for SSH sessions.

Simplify the guide around these flows, remove build SDK requirements from runtime checks, and report incomplete host setup instead of success. The old Docker launcher remains a compatibility entry point.

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • Documentation update
  • Breaking change: setup_container.sh now launches a container from the host instead of provisioning SDKs inside one.

Testing

  • Jetson AGX Orin, L4T R39.2.1: host and container previews passed; both views visually checked, approximately 60 fps with zero drops. User confirmed both flows.
  • SSH container launch passed with DISPLAY=:1 and XAUTHORITY unset.
  • Shell syntax, Docker build, make current-docs, and all pre-commit hooks passed.
  • First-install overlay selection/reboot remains untested on this already-configured host.

Checklist

  • Contribution guidelines followed
  • Linter and formatter passed
  • Documentation updated
  • Hardware validation used for this setup workflow; no new automated tests
  • Commit signed off

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a streamlined setup and live-preview guide for two SHW5G cameras on the SG8A carrier.
    • Added host-side container setup with display access, camera asset mounts, and options to build or reuse an image.
    • Added clearer camera and configuration checks, with troubleshooting guidance for common setup issues.
  • Improvements

    • Setup now provides direct camera preview instructions and clearer next steps when a reboot or new login is required.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update SHW5G host setup and runtime checks, replace the container setup workflow with a host-side launcher, and revise the camera preview guide. The guide covers two SHW5G cameras on the SG8A carrier and documents the tested Jetson platform, software versions, and configuration. Setup handles driver-overlay and group activation requirements. Runtime checks require the camera tool and configuration. The launcher manages image build, camera and display mounts, and container execution.

An SSH-launched container preview can fail display authentication when a stale home authority file exists. The affected users have an explicit XAUTHORITY workaround, but the launcher should select the active cookie.

Summary

Replaces the SENSING guide and scripts with a two-command flow per environment (setup, then the same nvsipl_camera --egl-display command), removes ~370 lines of SDK-provisioning/cache code, and makes setup.sh fail instead of reporting success when setup is incomplete. Direction and readability gain are good; no blockers found. Static review only — nothing was run on hardware.

Legend: 🚫 Blocker · 💡 Suggestion · 🔍 Nit

Finding
💡 src/plugins/sensing/docker/setup_container.sh:~105 — the DISPLAY/Xauthority checks and X11 mounts run for every mode except --build-only, so --print-args and --json die on a headless host or devcontainer, though they are documented as the flags for your own container. Gate the X11 block on actually launching.
💡 src/plugins/sensing/scripts/run_docker_example.sh:8 — the "compatibility entry point" changes behaviour: the working dir moves from the plugin dir to the repo root, so the previously documented -- scripts/validate.sh no longer resolves, and --json changes from bare "flag", lines to a full JSON array. Keep the old behaviour or call out the break.
💡 src/plugins/sensing/scripts/setup.sh:~218 — confirm "Open Jetson-IO now?" presumably auto-accepts under --yes, which would launch an interactive TUI in an unattended run (not verified against confirm). Skip it when ASSUME_YES is set.
💡 docs/source/device/camera/sensing.rst (container section) — "opens a shell at the repository root" overstates it: only src/plugins/sensing is mounted and -w points at a Docker-created empty parent. Say so, or mount the repo root.
💡 src/plugins/sensing/docker/setup_container.sh:~110 — if XAUTHORITY is unset and ~/.Xauthority exists but is not GDM's (e.g. left by SSH forwarding), the GDM fallback is skipped and auth fails with a cookie error. Prefer the GDM file when it exists, or probe both.
💡 docs/source/device/camera/sensing.rst, scripts/setup.sh:~215,~247, docker/setup_container.sh:~143 — the nvsipl_camera … command is hard-coded in five places while common.sh already defines SENSING_PLATFORM_CONFIG and SENSING_LINK_MASKS. Define it once (e.g. SENSING_CAMERA_CMD) and reuse it.
💡 src/plugins/sensing/scripts/validate.sh, setup.sh --smoke-test — both now duplicate the direct command, and the guide no longer mentions validate.sh; verify.sh:98 still tells users to run it. Remove or reconcile them.
🔍 src/plugins/sensing/AGENTS.md (new GDM-authority bullet) — low-level detail already stated in the code comment and the troubleshooting table; repo AGENTS.md keeps such detail in code comments. Keep the high-level rules, drop this bullet.
🔍 src/plugins/sensing/docker/Dockerfile.example:21 — the new "Xext/XCB GLX" comment sits before the paragraph explaining why EGL is needed, so the two read as one block. Move it next to the package list.
🔍 docs/source/device/camera/sensing.rst (container section) — mid-sentence line breaks ("access;" / "it is removed").
🔍 src/plugins/sensing/docker/setup_container.sh:17 — the -- COMMAND usage comment is misaligned.
🔍 src/plugins/sensing/scripts/setup.sh:~106 — sensing_check_installer changed from warn to die with no override flag; likely intended, but not mentioned in the guide.

Actionables (for bots — copy-paste-ready for AI)

Agent-generated suggestions, not human-vetted obligations. Skip anything wrong, already addressed, or not worth the churn.

  • src/plugins/sensing/docker/setup_container.sh:~105 — only run the DISPLAY/Xauthority validation and append the X11 args when MODE is run, so --print-args/--json work without a desktop.
  • src/plugins/sensing/scripts/run_docker_example.sh:8 — preserve the old working dir and --json output, or document the change in the guide/README.
  • src/plugins/sensing/scripts/setup.sh:~218 — do not call Jetson-IO when ASSUME_YES=1; print the instructions only.
  • docs/source/device/camera/sensing.rst — correct the "repository root" wording for the container shell, and rejoin the broken lines.
  • src/plugins/sensing/docker/setup_container.sh:~110 — prefer /run/user/$UID/gdm/Xauthority when it exists and XAUTHORITY is unset.
  • src/plugins/sensing/scripts/common.sh — add a single SENSING_CAMERA_CMD built from SENSING_CONFIGS_DIR, SENSING_PLATFORM_CONFIG, SENSING_LINK_MASKS; use it in setup.sh, setup_container.sh and validate.sh; keep the docs in sync.
  • src/plugins/sensing/scripts/verify.sh:98 — drop or replace the validate.sh hint; decide whether validate.sh and --smoke-test stay.
  • src/plugins/sensing/AGENTS.md — remove the GDM-authority bullet.
  • src/plugins/sensing/docker/Dockerfile.example:21 — move the Xext/XCB comment next to the apt-get install line.
