title: Nine server setups, no server of its own
description: What Solid Memo, a polished spaced-repetition app with no backend, learned about logging in, keeping data in someone else's pod and running against nine pod server setups, and what it asks of identity providers, servers, libraries and the specs. A 30-minute talk, questions included, for people who build on Solid.

# Nine server setups, no server of its own

What a Solid app for everyone learned in production, and what it asks of the ecosystem

---

## Solid Memo

Spaced-repetition flashcards in **your own pod**.

- Static files on GitHub Pages: **no backend, no secret**
- Guest mode, six UI languages, **115** decks and courses
- **1.0.0** on October 13, 2026; **168** releases in all
- Costs **123.75 SEK a year**: the domain

---

## Where everything lives

---

# 1. Logging in with no backend

---

## A Client ID Document, written by the build

```typescript
const document = {
 "@context": [OIDC_CONTEXT],
 client_id: clientIdUrl(origin), // https://solid-memo.com/clientid.jsonld
 redirect_uris: [`${origin}/`],
 scope: "openid offline_access webid",
 grant_types: ["authorization_code", "refresh_token"],
 token_endpoint_auth_method: "none",
 application_type: "web",
};
```

Used only when the provider lists `webid` in `scopes_supported`. Anywhere else (dev, test journeys, a fork without its own domain): dynamic registration.

---

## One redirect URI for every issuer

Every provider gets the same redirect URI and, on solid-memo.com, the same `client_id`.
Only **RFC 9207's `iss`** says which provider an answer came from.

- An answer **without `iss`**, or with another issuer's: refused
- The issuer each tab was sent to is kept **per tab**
- A provider that sends no `iss` **can't be used** to log in
- Parameters the tab never asked for are **stripped** before the library sees them

---

## DPoP binds a token to a key, not to a server

The login's fetch sends the user's token **to any address it's given**.

- **A credential gate**: as the user only inside their own storages and the Solid Memo folders they registered; elsewhere, read as no one, and never write
- **`redirect: "error"`** on every credentialed request
- **Signed out** on a 401 only when the session is gone, or on `error="invalid_token"` from the user's own storage or provider

---

## Behind a seam: a second client

```typescript
export interface SessionClient {
 restore(): Promise;
 sessionIssuer(): Promise;
 requestIssuer(state: string): Promise;
 login(options: LoginOptions): Promise;
 logout(): Promise;
 fetch: typeof globalThis.fetch;
 webId(): string | undefined;
}
```

Inrupt's libraries by default. Behind a build flag, a client with **no Inrupt library**: its login **about 800 lines** on oauth4webapi. The same contract tests for both.

---

# 2. Data in someone else's pod

---

## Documents by how often they change

```text
solid-memo/main/
 meta.ttl what this instance is
 catalog.ttl every deck, DCAT: one GET for the deck list
 decks/.ttl a deck's cards: slow churn
 reviews/.ttl their review states: fast churn
 history/2026-11.ttl the answers, one document a month
 digest.ttl derived facts, each with the ETag it came from
 drafts/ releases/ the Studio's
```

Not a resource per card: Solid has **no batch read**.

---

## Writing with no transactions

- **`If-Match`** on every edit, **`If-None-Match: *`** on every create
- On a **412**, read again and apply the change again, for documents others share: the type index, the catalog
- An answer is an **insert-only PATCH** with no precondition: its subject is unique
- **The order is the transaction**: create-only writes first, the link that names them last

```sparql
INSERT DATA {
<#answer-20261003T081544001Z-p0m2zz> "1"^^<…#integer> .
};
```

---

## Formats that move, data that stays

- **`formatVersion`** on every subject; a **SHACL shape** per class and version, no `sh:targetClass`
- Old formats read **in memory**; the pod rewritten only **when the user agrees**
- **Never over a newer app's data**; others' triples survive
- Terms **never taken back**, shapes **never edited**

---

## A variant, not a migration

```turtle
<#card-1> a solid-memo:ReviewState ;
 solid-memo:formatVersion 2 ;
 solid-memo:scheduler solid-memo:sm2 ;
 solid-memo:easeFactor 2.5 ; solid-memo:intervalDays 6 ;
 solid-memo:reviewOf .
<#review-3f1c2a9e-…> a solid-memo:ReviewState ;
 solid-memo:formatVersion 1 ;
 solid-memo:scheduler solid-memo:fsrs6 ;
 solid-memo:stability 6.2 ; solid-memo:difficulty 4.93 ;
 solid-memo:reviewOf .
```

---

## A good neighbor in a shared pod

- Reads **one** type registration, its own `solid-memo:Instance`
- Registers its decks, cards, review states and answers **for other apps**: the last two in the **private** index only
- Writes registrations **only when asked**, never because it opened
- Follows type index links only on the **WebID's origins or its storages**
- Removes **only what it wrote**, and keeps folders holding other apps' files

---

# 3. Nine server setups

---

## The matrix

| Every change: blocks a merge | Weekly and on main: reported, not blocking |
| --- | --- |
| Community Solid Server 7.2.0 and 6.1.0 | Community Solid Server 8.0.0-alpha.3 |
| CSS 7.2.0 with **ACP** in place of WAC | Pivot 1.8.2, solidcommunity.net's server |
| Node Solid Server 6.0.0 and 5.8.8 | Solid-Nextcloud, on Nextcloud 32 |
| | JavaScript Solid Server 0.0.224 |

Real servers in Docker, pinned by digest, lockfile or commit. **About 100 tests** in each.

---

## Probe, don't assume

```typescript
const CSS: Traits = { etag: true, etagEveryEdit: true, edits: true,
 creations: true, sparqlUpdate: true, n3: true };
const NSS: Traits = { etag: false, etagEveryEdit: false, edits: false,
 creations: true, sparqlUpdate: true, n3: true };
const PINNED: Record = {
 "css-7": CSS, "css-6": { ...CSS, etagEveryEdit: false },
 "nss-6": NSS, "nss-5": NSS, "css-acp": CSS,
};
```

A test may skip only where **the protocol allows** what the server does. What the app needs is never a reason.

---

## What we found: Node Solid Server and CSS

| Server | What it does | What the app does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| NSS 5, 6 | No ETag; `If-Match` ignored | Unconditional edits; reads everything each visit |
| NSS 5, 6 | PATCH: no `.` touching a term (`1.}`, as Inrupt's solid-client writes), at most 100 kB | Its own SPARQL Update; PUT over 64 KiB |
| NSS 5, 6 | `1.0` matched only as `1`; a patched `true` stored as false | Retries a 409; preferences by PUT |
| CSS 6 | ETags from whole seconds | Lives with it; the tests probe five edits |
| CSS 7, in-memory store | Cuts non-ASCII text short after a PATCH (the file store doesn't) | PUTs drafts whole |
| CSS with ACP | 404 for an ACR not written yet: the library sees no ACP | Reads it as an empty ACR |

---

## What we found: the other servers, and a library

| Server or library | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| JSS 0.0.224 | A patched literal loses its language tag: `"…"^^rdf:langString`, which RDF doesn't allow |
| JSS 0.0.224 | Takes ACLs in JSON-LD only: Turtle gets 415 |
| Solid-Nextcloud | `DELETE DATA` deletes **every value** of the subject and predicate |
| Solid-Nextcloud | Every document's `rel=acl` is the **folder's** `.acl` |
| Solid-Nextcloud | `HEAD` answers 204 for a missing resource |
| Pivot, CSS 8 alpha | **Pass everything** |
| @inrupt/solid-client 4 | `getSolidDataset` copies the graph per quad, **O(n²)**: 9 s for 3,010 cards; fetch and parse 50 ms |

---

# 4. Patterns worth taking

---

## The pod is a fetch

```typescript
export function routedFetch({ origin, local, remote }) {
 return (input, init) => {
 const url = input instanceof Request ? input.url : String(input);
 return url.startsWith(origin) ? local(input, init) : remote(input, init);
 };
}
```

- **Guest mode**: a small pod in IndexedDB, at `https://guest.solid-memo.invalid/`
- After login, the study can move into the real pod: **a copy from one URL to another**
- The same pod code again: the Studio's **sandbox**, and a **test double**

---

## Publishing, with no server of mine

1. A **draft** in the author's own pod
2. **`PUT` with `If-None-Match: *`**: `releases//v2.ttl`, written once
3. **Public read** on that one document: its own `.acl` or `.acr`, nothing else
4. **Linked** from the author's catalog, last

Readers add it **by link**: read as no one, within limits, SHACL-checked, and **the read that passed** is what's imported.

---

## What I'd ask of you

### Identity providers

- Send **`iss`**, always
- List **`none`** for public clients
- Spell your issuer **one way**

### Servers

- A strong **ETag on every write**
- Enforce **`If-Match`**
- Keep literals **as written**
- Delete **only what's named**
- **No redirects** for pod data

### Specs and libraries

- A **batch read**
- Client ID Document **caching and logout**
- A **latest version** link
- **Don't send tokens** everywhere

Solid Memo: flashcards that live in your own pod

## I wanted to build an app, not run a company

- A server to rent, patch and watch
- A database of other people's data, and its backups
- Accounts, passwords, password resets
- A privacy policy, and the duty to keep it
- A bill every month, whether anyone uses it or not

---

## I also wanted to prove something

Solid is often shown in demos and prototypes.

*Can it carry a polished app that anyone would use?*

One the Solid project can point to.

---

## For anyone who wants to learn

The app shows each card again **just before you would forget it**.

A day, then a few days, then weeks. A few minutes a day are enough.

Not for Solid people: for a student, a traveler learning Korean, someone studying for a driving test.

## Three promises, one bar

1. **No server of its own**, and almost no bill
2. **Free**, for anyone who wants to learn
3. **Open**, from the code to the decisions

## What a Solid pod is

> Your own online storage, run by a Pod provider you choose, or by yourself. Apps that follow the Solid standards keep your data there, and **you decide who may read it.**

Solid is a set of open specifications from the W3C community for storing your data apart from the apps that use it.

### A typical app

- Servers, rented and patched
- A database, and its backups
- Accounts and password resets
- Personal data, and the duty to guard it
- Monitoring, on call

### Solid Memo

- Static files, on GitHub Pages
- No database: your pod holds your data
- No accounts: your provider has them
- No analytics, no cookies, no tracking
- A domain

---

## What it costs to run

123.75 SEK

a year, for the domain. Nothing else. *About 10 SEK a month.*

---

## Costs that don't grow

Each learner brings their **own storage**.

A thousand more learners: still 123.75 SEK a year.

No users at all: still 123.75 SEK a year.

---

## The honest trade-offs

- **Learners need a pod.** So you can start as a guest, in the browser, and move into a pod later.
- **Pod servers differ.** So the app is tested against nine of them.
- **Nothing runs while the app is closed.** No push reminders: due cards wait for you.
- **A young ecosystem.** Fewer providers, fewer libraries, more to learn.

---

# 2. Free, for anyone who wants to learn

---

## No account needed to start

**Try it without logging in.** Study as a guest, and what you learn is kept in this browser.

Log in later, and move it into your own pod.

---

## Studying

A card's front, then its back. *How well did you remember it?*

Scheduled with **FSRS-6** by default, or the classic **SM-2**, shown here.

---

## From paintings to Vim to Korean

**115** in the library: 106 decks and 9 courses.

The app speaks **six languages**: English, Swedish, Korean, German, Spanish and French.

---

## Courses

A little theory, then questions.

Every question you answer **becomes a card** in your own deck.

From *Getting started with Solid Memo* to *Swedish Driving License B: Theory*.

---

## Your progress, worked out in your browser

Streaks, answers, what you know.

All from your own pod. *Nothing is sent anywhere.*

---

## Anyone includes everyone

- Aims for **WCAG 2.2, level AA**
- Every screen the **user journeys** visit, checked by **axe**, light and dark
- Made for the **keyboard** alone
- Four palettes, high contrast and color-blind friendly among them
- Text up to 1.5×, reduced motion, right-to-left text

An aim, not a claim: the gaps are listed in the docs.

---

# 3. Open

---

## Open source, and open about how it's run

- Code under the **MIT** license, every file marked (REUSE)
- Committed to the **Standard for Public Code**
- Assessed against it in the open: 41 of 46 MUSTs, 36 of 51 SHOULDs
- The gaps written down, with what's planned

Assessed, not certified: October 18, 2026, at version 3.11.0.

---

## Every decision in writing, in public

- Issues, discussions and pull requests are **the** channels
- A decision exists only once it is **written there**
- Every commit says **why**
- Two exceptions, both private: **security** reports and **code of conduct** reports

---

## Open data, for other Solid apps

- A vocabulary for spaced repetition, at **solid-memo.com/ns/**
- **SHACL shapes** for what valid data looks like, version by version
- A deck library as a **DCAT** catalog, each deck under its own open license

Build an app that reads the same pod. *Your users will thank you.*

---

## Studio: writing decks and courses

Write a deck or a course, check it against every rule, preview it, play it as a learner would, and **publish it in your own pod**.

---

## Built to outlast its maintainer

- A **DOI** at Zenodo for its releases
- The source preserved in **Software Heritage**
- A written plan for the **domain** if the maintainer steps away
- What other people's data points at, kept online for at least three years after

---

# 4. The proof

---

## Works with your pod, whoever hosts it

Tested against **nine** pod server setups, real servers in Docker:

| Every pull request | Weekly, and when main's code changes |
| --- | --- |
| Community Solid Server 6 and 7 | Community Solid Server 8 (alpha) |
| CSS 7 with ACP | Pivot (solidcommunity.net) |
| Node Solid Server 5 and 6 | Nextcloud with Solid |
| | JavaScript Solid Server |

---

## Tested like a person uses it

- **User journeys**: a browser clicks through the app, step by step
- In **Chromium**; logging in and guest study also in **Firefox**, **WebKit** and on a **phone**
- On a fresh account and pod, on a real Solid server
- **No retries**: a flaky test is fixed, not re-run
- The report is public: **journeys.solid-memo.com**

---

## Every line covered

- **100% coverage**, per package: statements, branches, functions, lines
- Unreachable code is **removed**, not excluded
- **Boundaries** between layers, checked on every change
- A limit on how complex a function may be

Coverage doesn't prove the code right. It proves none of it goes untested.

---

## Stable, and says when it isn't

- **1.0.0** from the first release, on October 13, 2026
- **Semantic versioning**: a change that breaks data is a new major version
- Every promise to other apps is **written down**, one per line
- A vocabulary term is **never taken back**; a published shape or deck version is **never edited**

---

## What this proves

A polished app for anyone, built on Solid **by one person**,

# Contributing

A new talk, a translation of one, or a fix to a slide is welcome. The
project's way of working, its code of conduct and how to report a
security issue are the website's: see its
[CONTRIBUTING.md](https://github.com/solid-memo/website/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md)
and [GOVERNANCE.md](https://github.com/solid-memo/website/blob/main/GOVERNANCE.md).
What follows is what is particular to the talks.

## Open an issue first

For a new talk, open an issue that says who it is for, how long it is
and what the audience should do afterwards, with an outline of its
slides. A fix to a slide can go straight to a pull request.

## A talk's rules

`npm run check:slides` checks them:

- **The front matter** has a `title:` and a `description:`, which the
 list of talks shows.
- **Every slide has speaker notes**, in an HTML comment, so that someone
 else can give the talk. A comment that starts with a word and a colon
 is read by Marp as a directive, not a note: start a note otherwise.
- **Every picture has a description**, in its alt text beside Marp's
 sizing keywords (`w:300`), saying what it shows.
- **Every picture is in the talk's `images/` folder**, so that the talk
 loads nothing from anywhere else.

And the checks can't see these:

- **Facts come with their source.** A figure about the app (decks,
 languages, servers) is checked against the website's `main` the day it
 is written, and the notes say to check it again before the talk.
- **Plain words** for the audience the talk names, in American English.
- **A new talk is listed** in the README's table, and its license is
 CC BY 4.0, as [REUSE.toml](REUSE.toml) gives every `*/slides.md`.

## Commits

Commits follow [Conventional Commits](https://www.conventionalcommits.org/),
as the website's do: `type(scope): subject`, with a body that says why.
The scope is the talk's folder, such as `feat(2026-solid-memo): add the
slide on courses`.

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International

 Creative Commons Corporation (“Creative Commons”) is not a law firm and does not provide legal services or legal advice. Distribution of Creative Commons public licenses does not create a lawyer-client or other relationship. Creative Commons makes its licenses and related information available on an “as-is” basis. Creative Commons gives no warranties regarding its licenses, any material licensed under their terms and conditions, or any related information. Creative Commons disclaims all liability for damages resulting from their use to the fullest extent possible.

Using Creative Commons Public Licenses

Creative Commons public licenses provide a standard set of terms and conditions that creators and other rights holders may use to share original works of authorship and other material subject to copyright and certain other rights specified in the public license below. The following considerations are for informational purposes only, are not exhaustive, and do not form part of our licenses.

Considerations for licensors: Our public licenses are intended for use by those authorized to give the public permission to use material in ways otherwise restricted by copyright and certain other rights. Our licenses are irrevocable. Licensors should read and understand the terms and conditions of the license they choose before applying it. Licensors should also secure all rights necessary before applying our licenses so that the public can reuse the material as expected. Licensors should clearly mark any material not subject to the license. This includes other CC-licensed material, or material used under an exception or limitation to copyright. More considerations for licensors.

Considerations for the public: By using one of our public licenses, a licensor grants the public permission to use the licensed material under specified terms and conditions. If the licensor’s permission is not necessary for any reason–for example, because of any applicable exception or limitation to copyright–then that use is not regulated by the license. Our licenses grant only permissions under copyright and certain other rights that a licensor has authority to grant. Use of the licensed material may still be restricted for other reasons, including because others have copyright or other rights in the material. A licensor may make special requests, such as asking that all changes be marked or described. Although not required by our licenses, you are encouraged to respect those requests where reasonable. More considerations for the public.

Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License

By exercising the Licensed Rights (defined below), You accept and agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License ("Public License"). To the extent this Public License may be interpreted as a contract, You are granted the Licensed Rights in consideration of Your acceptance of these terms and conditions, and the Licensor grants You such rights in consideration of benefits the Licensor receives from making the Licensed Material available under these terms and conditions.

Section 1 – Definitions.

 a. Adapted Material means material subject to Copyright and Similar Rights that is derived from or based upon the Licensed Material and in which the Licensed Material is translated, altered, arranged, transformed, or otherwise modified in a manner requiring permission under the Copyright and Similar Rights held by the Licensor. For purposes of this Public License, where the Licensed Material is a musical work, performance, or sound recording, Adapted Material is always produced where the Licensed Material is synched in timed relation with a moving image.

 b. Adapter's License means the license You apply to Your Copyright and Similar Rights in Your contributions to Adapted Material in accordance with the terms and conditions of this Public License.

 c. Copyright and Similar Rights means copyright and/or similar rights closely related to copyright including, without limitation, performance, broadcast, sound recording, and Sui Generis Database Rights, without regard to how the rights are labeled or categorized. For purposes of this Public License, the rights specified in Section 2(b)(1)-(2) are not Copyright and Similar Rights.

 d. Effective Technological Measures means those measures that, in the absence of proper authority, may not be circumvented under laws fulfilling obligations under Article 11 of the WIPO Copyright Treaty adopted on December 20, 1996, and/or similar international agreements.

 e. Exceptions and Limitations means fair use, fair dealing, and/or any other exception or limitation to Copyright and Similar Rights that applies to Your use of the Licensed Material.

 f. Licensed Material means the artistic or literary work, database, or other material to which the Licensor applied this Public License.

 g. Licensed Rights means the rights granted to You subject to the terms and conditions of this Public License, which are limited to all Copyright and Similar Rights that apply to Your use of the Licensed Material and that the Licensor has authority to license.

 h. Licensor means the individual(s) or entity(ies) granting rights under this Public License.

 i. Share means to provide material to the public by any means or process that requires permission under the Licensed Rights, such as reproduction, public display, public performance, distribution, dissemination, communication, or importation, and to make material available to the public including in ways that members of the public may access the material from a place and at a time individually chosen by them.

 j. Sui Generis Database Rights means rights other than copyright resulting from Directive 96/9/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 1996 on the legal protection of databases, as amended and/or succeeded, as well as other essentially equivalent rights anywhere in the world.

 k. You means the individual or entity exercising the Licensed Rights under this Public License. Your has a corresponding meaning.

Section 2 – Scope.

 a. License grant.

 1. Subject to the terms and conditions of this Public License, the Licensor hereby grants You a worldwide, royalty-free, non-sublicensable, non-exclusive, irrevocable license to exercise the Licensed Rights in the Licensed Material to:

 A. reproduce and Share the Licensed Material, in whole or in part; and

 B. produce, reproduce, and Share Adapted Material.

 2. Exceptions and Limitations. For the avoidance of doubt, where Exceptions and Limitations apply to Your use, this Public License does not apply, and You do not need to comply with its terms and conditions.

 3. Term. The term of this Public License is specified in Section 6(a).

 4. Media and formats; technical modifications allowed. The Licensor authorizes You to exercise the Licensed Rights in all media and formats whether now known or hereafter created, and to make technical modifications necessary to do so. The Licensor waives and/or agrees not to assert any right or authority to forbid You from making technical modifications necessary to exercise the Licensed Rights, including technical modifications necessary to circumvent Effective Technological Measures. For purposes of this Public License, simply making modifications authorized by this Section 2(a)(4) never produces Adapted Material.

 5. Downstream recipients.

 A. Offer from the Licensor – Licensed Material. Every recipient of the Licensed Material automatically receives an offer from the Licensor to exercise the Licensed Rights under the terms and conditions of this Public License.

 B. No downstream restrictions. You may not offer or impose any additional or different terms or conditions on, or apply any Effective Technological Measures to, the Licensed Material if doing so restricts exercise of the Licensed Rights by any recipient of the Licensed Material.

 6. No endorsement. Nothing in this Public License constitutes or may be construed as permission to assert or imply that You are, or that Your use of the Licensed Material is, connected with, or sponsored, endorsed, or granted official status by, the Licensor or others designated to receive attribution as provided in Section 3(a)(1)(A)(i).

b. Other rights.

 1. Moral rights, such as the right of integrity, are not licensed under this Public License, nor are publicity, privacy, and/or other similar personality rights; however, to the extent possible, the Licensor waives and/or agrees not to assert any such rights held by the Licensor to the limited extent necessary to allow You to exercise the Licensed Rights, but not otherwise.

 2. Patent and trademark rights are not licensed under this Public License.

 3. To the extent possible, the Licensor waives any right to collect royalties from You for the exercise of the Licensed Rights, whether directly or through a collecting society under any voluntary or waivable statutory or compulsory licensing scheme. In all other cases the Licensor expressly reserves any right to collect such royalties.

Section 3 – License Conditions.

Your exercise of the Licensed Rights is expressly made subject to the following conditions.

 a. Attribution.

 1. If You Share the Licensed Material (including in modified form), You must:

 A. retain the following if it is supplied by the Licensor with the Licensed Material:

 i. identification of the creator(s) of the Licensed Material and any others designated to receive attribution, in any reasonable manner requested by the Licensor (including by pseudonym if designated);

 ii. a copyright notice;

 iii. a notice that refers to this Public License;

 iv. a notice that refers to the disclaimer of warranties;

 v. a URI or hyperlink to the Licensed Material to the extent reasonably practicable;

 B. indicate if You modified the Licensed Material and retain an indication of any previous modifications; and

 C. indicate the Licensed Material is licensed under this Public License, and include the text of, or the URI or hyperlink to, this Public License.

 2. You may satisfy the conditions in Section 3(a)(1) in any reasonable manner based on the medium, means, and context in which You Share the Licensed Material. For example, it may be reasonable to satisfy the conditions by providing a URI or hyperlink to a resource that includes the required information.

 3. If requested by the Licensor, You must remove any of the information required by Section 3(a)(1)(A) to the extent reasonably practicable.

 4. If You Share Adapted Material You produce, the Adapter's License You apply must not prevent recipients of the Adapted Material from complying with this Public License.

Section 4 – Sui Generis Database Rights.

Where the Licensed Rights include Sui Generis Database Rights that apply to Your use of the Licensed Material:

 a. for the avoidance of doubt, Section 2(a)(1) grants You the right to extract, reuse, reproduce, and Share all or a substantial portion of the contents of the database;

 b. if You include all or a substantial portion of the database contents in a database in which You have Sui Generis Database Rights, then the database in which You have Sui Generis Database Rights (but not its individual contents) is Adapted Material; and

 c. You must comply with the conditions in Section 3(a) if You Share all or a substantial portion of the contents of the database.
For the avoidance of doubt, this Section 4 supplements and does not replace Your obligations under this Public License where the Licensed Rights include other Copyright and Similar Rights.

Section 5 – Disclaimer of Warranties and Limitation of Liability.

 a. Unless otherwise separately undertaken by the Licensor, to the extent possible, the Licensor offers the Licensed Material as-is and as-available, and makes no representations or warranties of any kind concerning the Licensed Material, whether express, implied, statutory, or other. This includes, without limitation, warranties of title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, absence of latent or other defects, accuracy, or the presence or absence of errors, whether or not known or discoverable. Where disclaimers of warranties are not allowed in full or in part, this disclaimer may not apply to You.

 b. To the extent possible, in no event will the Licensor be liable to You on any legal theory (including, without limitation, negligence) or otherwise for any direct, special, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, exemplary, or other losses, costs, expenses, or damages arising out of this Public License or use of the Licensed Material, even if the Licensor has been advised of the possibility of such losses, costs, expenses, or damages. Where a limitation of liability is not allowed in full or in part, this limitation may not apply to You.

 c. The disclaimer of warranties and limitation of liability provided above shall be interpreted in a manner that, to the extent possible, most closely approximates an absolute disclaimer and waiver of all liability.

Section 6 – Term and Termination.

 a. This Public License applies for the term of the Copyright and Similar Rights licensed here. However, if You fail to comply with this Public License, then Your rights under this Public License terminate automatically.

 b. Where Your right to use the Licensed Material has terminated under Section 6(a), it reinstates:

 1. automatically as of the date the violation is cured, provided it is cured within 30 days of Your discovery of the violation; or

 2. upon express reinstatement by the Licensor.

 c. For the avoidance of doubt, this Section 6(b) does not affect any right the Licensor may have to seek remedies for Your violations of this Public License.

 d. For the avoidance of doubt, the Licensor may also offer the Licensed Material under separate terms or conditions or stop distributing the Licensed Material at any time; however, doing so will not terminate this Public License.

 e. Sections 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8 survive termination of this Public License.

Section 7 – Other Terms and Conditions.

 a. The Licensor shall not be bound by any additional or different terms or conditions communicated by You unless expressly agreed.

 b. Any arrangements, understandings, or agreements regarding the Licensed Material not stated herein are separate from and independent of the terms and conditions of this Public License.

Section 8 – Interpretation.

 a. For the avoidance of doubt, this Public License does not, and shall not be interpreted to, reduce, limit, restrict, or impose conditions on any use of the Licensed Material that could lawfully be made without permission under this Public License.

 b. To the extent possible, if any provision of this Public License is deemed unenforceable, it shall be automatically reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable. If the provision cannot be reformed, it shall be severed from this Public License without affecting the enforceability of the remaining terms and conditions.

 c. No term or condition of this Public License will be waived and no failure to comply consented to unless expressly agreed to by the Licensor.

 d. Nothing in this Public License constitutes or may be interpreted as a limitation upon, or waiver of, any privileges and immunities that apply to the Licensor or You, including from the legal processes of any jurisdiction or authority.

Creative Commons is not a party to its public licenses. Notwithstanding, Creative Commons may elect to apply one of its public licenses to material it publishes and in those instances will be considered the “Licensor.” Except for the limited purpose of indicating that material is shared under a Creative Commons public license or as otherwise permitted by the Creative Commons policies published at creativecommons.org/policies, Creative Commons does not authorize the use of the trademark “Creative Commons” or any other trademark or logo of Creative Commons without its prior written consent including, without limitation, in connection with any unauthorized modifications to any of its public licenses or any other arrangements, understandings, or agreements concerning use of licensed material. For the avoidance of doubt, this paragraph does not form part of the public licenses.

# Solid Memo talks
Talks about [Solid Memo](https://solid-memo.com/), spaced-repetition
-flashcards that live in your own Solid Pod.
flashcards that live in your own Solid Pod. Each talk is Markdown,
built with [Marp](https://marp.app/) into a web page, a PDF and a
PowerPoint file, with speaker notes on every slide, so that anyone can
give it.

The talks are published at .

| Talk | For | Length |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Build the app, let users keep the data](2026-solid-memo/slides.md) | Developers who don't know Solid | 40 minutes |
| [Nine server setups, no server of its own](2026-solid-memo-practitioners/slides.md) | People who build on Solid: app developers, server implementers, spec authors | 30 minutes, with questions |

## Give a talk

The talks are under [CC BY 4.0](LICENSES/CC-BY-4.0.txt): give them,
translate them or change them, and say where they came from, such as
"From Solid Memo's talks, github.com/solid-memo/talks, CC BY 4.0".

Each slide's speaker notes are in its HTML comment, and in the
`-notes.txt` file beside each build. Before a talk, check the figures
the notes say to check: they are true on the day the talk was written,
and the app keeps growing.

## Build

You need Node.js (the version in [.nvmrc](.nvmrc)) and Chrome or
Chromium, which draws the PDF and the PowerPoint file.

```sh
npm ci
npm run check
```

`npm run check` checks the slides (`npm run check:slides`) and builds
every talk into `dist/` (`npm run build`). Marp finds an installed
Chrome by itself; to use another browser, set `CHROME_PATH` to it:

```sh
CHROME_PATH=~/.cache/ms-playwright/chromium-1248/chrome-linux64/chrome npm run check
```

To see a talk while you write it, preview it with Marp, its themes
given: `npx marp --preview --theme-set themes /slides.md`. The
preview uses your system's fonts; `npm run build` embeds the theme's.

The other checks CI runs need Python's linters:
`pip install -r scripts/requirements-lint.txt`, then
`npm run lint:reuse` (every file states its license) and
`npm run lint:workflows` (the workflows, with actionlint and zizmor).

## How it is made

- **A talk** is a folder at the root, named after its year and subject,
 with its `slides.md` and its pictures in `images/`.
- **The theme**, [themes/solid-memo.css](themes/solid-memo.css), is the
 app's own look: its Standard palette and its fonts, Fredoka and
 Bangers. Every text color meets WCAG AA. The fonts come from npm
 (`@fontsource`) and are embedded in each build, so a talk loads
 nothing from anywhere else.
- **The screenshots** are the website's
 ([apps/web/public/screenshots/](https://github.com/solid-memo/website/tree/main/apps/web/public/screenshots)),
 copied with its license, MIT. The website's `npm run screenshots`
 takes them again from the app.
- **The QR codes** were made with `npx qrcode@1.5.4 -t svg -e M`.

### Publishing

CI ([.github/workflows/ci.yml](.github/workflows/ci.yml)) checks and
builds every pull request, and on `main` publishes `dist/` to GitHub
Pages. The repository's Pages source is "GitHub Actions"
(Settings → Pages).

### Dependencies

Marp is the only dependency besides the fonts, pinned to an exact
version, and Renovate keeps it current. `package.json`'s `overrides`
lift three of Marp's dependencies to versions with their advisories
fixed. `npm audit` still reports `extract-zip`, which has no fixed
version: Puppeteer uses it only to download a browser, which the build
never does, as it draws in the Chrome already installed.

## Licenses

- The talks (`*/slides.md`) and their drawings: [CC BY 4.0](LICENSES/CC-BY-4.0.txt).
- The screenshots and the logo, from the website: [MIT](LICENSES/MIT.txt).
- Everything else, the theme, scripts and configuration: [MIT](LICENSE).

[REUSE.toml](REUSE.toml) says which applies to each file, and
`npm run lint:reuse` checks it.

## Contributing

A new talk, a translation or a fix is welcome: see
[CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md).
