Feedback on Restlet Framework 3.0 roadmap

[jlouvel]

Hi all,

After releasing 2.7.0, we have just started work on the 3.0 branch with these initial goals set:

• Embrace latest web API innovations
  • Transition HTTP connectivity from Jetty to Netty
  • Add support for HTTP QUERY method and OAS 3.2
  • Asynchronous APIs, incl. Webhooks
  • Integrate with Swagger Codegen to generate Restlet code
• Embrace latest Java innovations
  • Jackson 3.0 upgrade, aligned with Spring Framework
• Evolve Restlet API
  • Remove reliance on configuration properties and service loader pattern for deterministic Java configuration
  • Limit reliance on dynamic class loader to facilitate native compilation
• Optimize for AI and cloud native
  • Enable AI use cases via MCP
  • Support OpenTelemetry
  • GraalVM for reduced startup time (provide reflection configuration)
• Reboot web site and documentation
  • Transition website from restlet.talend.com to restlet.org
  • Brand new website and documentation
  • Further embrace GitHub for project management

Despite the major version number change, we will do our best to not unnecessarily break Restlet API compatibility, but we do want to allow for that when valuable

We welcome feedback and contributions on the 3.0 roadmap!

Best regards,
Jerome Louvel
