CauseGraph currently uses earliest dates available. If somebody provides a date without a year (like "May 13") in Wikidata, the system interprets "13" as the year. Likewise for abbreviated years (e.g. "12" for a publication from 2012). Ideally, CauseGraph tools would ignore and report such dates. Possible characteristics to use:
- Date is much earlier than all of the other dates associated with an item
- Date is earlier than date of birth/inception
- 1 and 2-digit years should receive especially close scrutiny
Related ideas: sometimes editors omit BCE. Also, some editors have provided a millennium as the primary date, and then nested more specific dates (e.g. second millennium, but 1478 to 1482). It then ends up at the millennium boundary in CauseGraph, which is undesirable.
